Olympic Fan Darcy Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Very sad Pele pulled out though as the person who lit the cauldron is somewhat of a nobody to most people (to me anyway, i'm probably just unaware but they said bronze medalist?). Should've gotten an athlete who is a sure thing for gold, to make it memorable like Cathy Freeman. Or Guga to do the last part, he was a number 1 in tennis
Ikarus360 Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Very simple cauldron, but the kinetic sculpture made up for it and makes it look very stunning. The way it was lit was kinda boring though. Also it reminds me a lot of Doha 2006. Like, a lot.
hektor Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Nice cauldron, although I do not like the fact that like for London 2012 it is not visible from outside the stadium.
thatsnotmypuppy Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 So.................... I'm guessing we are done? The first 45 minutes were superb. The rest - meh. Nice cauldron lighting though.
ofan Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Perfect choice for the final cauldron lighter
SkiFreak Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Jesus and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
micheal_warren Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 very different kind of cauldron. Its low emissions so keeps with the theme of the ceremony.

Olympic Fan Darcy Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Good use of the Christ the Redeemer in the background. This feels much better.
Olympic Fan Darcy Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Decent start, good end but a shockingly bad middle..
Olympic Fan Darcy Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 And that was it. Wow, really bad. Definitely one of the worst i've seen, sorry Rio but it's a no from me.

JMarkSnow2012 Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Obscure true fact. The statue of Christ the Redeemer is nearly 5km from the Maracana stadium.
SkiFreak Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 So how do you put such a cauldron on display after the games?
Ikarus360 Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Overall, a very good ceremony, though not without its couple of cons. Brazil did an amazing work with such a tight budget. Today they proved you can still pull out a memorable spectacle without so much opulence. Thanks for everything, guys. Now lets enjoy these 16 days of competition, and good luck to all countries on these games

All the other stuff too, speeches, the lighting of the cauldron (the cauldron itself was good), the laureate thing was odd cause straight after they opened the games out of nowhere?!, the dancing stuff, lack of athletes. So much bad.
JMarkSnow2012 Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Ummmm.... They have formally ended the ceremony, but we know there's a second cauldron on the waterfront. Very very strange.
intoronto Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 Can easily say these are the least favourite ceremonies I have experienced live (Olympics wise). However it did have its highlights and Brazil did its best it can!

Faster Posted August 6, 2016 Report Posted August 6, 2016 There was a couple of very good parts. Also some very bad parts. The cauldron is interesting. I love the kinetic sculpture but it just looks awkward. Worst ceremony since Atlanta 1996. But in saying that I initially hated Athens 2004, but now think it was one of the most brilliant.
