Rob2012
^^ A fairly minor blip Local authorities have suspended work on the arena hosting beach volleyball events at the Olympics in August due to a missing permit, Rio de Janeiro city officials said on Saturday.A spokesman for the Rio 2016 Olympic organizing committee, which is responsible for the temporary structure, said the paperwork would be submitted on Monday and the issue would not delay completion of the arena. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-olympics-rio-volleyball-idUSKCN0YX0M3?feedType=RSS&feedName=sportsNews&utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter&dlvrit=255506 Edited June 11, 2016 by Rob. ofan
I wanna know how they build that thing directly on sand. Won't the softness of the sand cause the whole structure to crumble?
Sir Rols
I wanna know how they build that thing directly on sand. Won't the softness of the sand cause the whole structure to crumble? Dunno, not an engineer, but it worked for us in Sydney too, so I gather it's not something that's insurmountable. Quaker2001
I wanna know how they build that thing directly on sand. Won't the softness of the sand cause the whole structure to crumble? Didn't they also host beach volleyball there for the Pan Ams in 2016? In which case, not even the first time they managed to build a beach volleyball venue there. If you spread the load over a large enough area the pressure at any one point won't be large enough to cause problems.
Oooswald
It seems that they had changed the layout of the arena from the renderings, right? Or they decided to turn around the arena on 180 degrees.

LatinXTC
It seems that they had changed the layout of the arena from the renderings, right? Or they decided to turn around the arena on 180 degrees. Interesting. Perhaps it's so they get at least some view of the ocean. Wouldn't make any sense to have a beach volleyball event on the beach without the backdrop of the ocean somewhere.
brasilolimpico
Rough seas and tidal reach work of Arena Volleyball Beach Obra centro de mídia em Copacabana (Foto: Amanda Kestelman) The strip of sand at the site where the arena is being built is 130m , the arena occupies a 100m area of this strip of sand . The high tide and rough seas tore down some bars surrounding the Arena volleyball and also surrounding the studio is being built for TV networks on the beach. The expectation is that the environmental license to continue the works to be awarded on Monday . brasilolimpico
...what's going on with the velodrome? This evolving, but a report is worrying. The latter indicate that 88% of the work is ready , including the air conditioning system and the track. But there is still a lot, for example, chairs , dressing rooms, technical rooms and the lighting is being finalized . Now the most disturbing : The newspaper ' O Globo ' reported that the IOC works with the certainty that the facade will not be completely ready in time . The city promises that will be . brasilolimpico
are the seas higher than normal? that's intense....wonder if the work stop was related to this?? On the tides it is important to note . How in the world are common, but are enhanced in Brazil by the passage of weather systems (cold front ) and high pressure areas along the coast . We currently have a high-pressure zone in the ocean and the other on the south of Brazil . The waves yesterday reached 6m in Guanabara where disputes occur boaters . Perhaps a spot of Rio can say that the latter tides in May and June were above average or normal .
