Rio de Janeiro has welcomed the Clipper Race fleet with open arms after a spectacular arrival set against the breath-taking Rio waterfront and the world-famous landmark of Sugarloaf Mountain. The yachts have moored under the gaze of Christ the Redeemer at Marina da Gloria in Guanabara Bay.

Preparations for the sailing events of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games are in full swing and Marina da Gloria looks set to be the perfect location for the world’s most elite yachtsmen and women.

“The plans for Marina da Gloria to host the Rio 2016 Olympic sailing events look excellent and from my experience of the extensive support we’ve received from Rio de Janeiro city government and the team at the marina, it’s clear that there’s a real determination and ability to create a world class facility and experience here.

“The Clipper Race visits leading port facilities on six continents in the course of our global race, so we have a lot of experience of the world’s leading marinas. It would be great to be able to return in 2017 and see how Marina da Gloria and Rio have been transformed by the Olympic Games,” added Sir Robin.

Teams have been taking advantage of tourist information in the race village here and have gone off to explore the landmarks, extensive beaches, culture and night-life

"Rio 2016 have scrapped plans for a 4,000-seater floating grandstand at the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas rowing and canoe sprint venue ahead of this summer's Olympic and Paralympic Games, organisers have confirmed. Seating has also been reduced by a undisclosed amount at the beach volleyball venue on Copacabana Bay. Abandoning the floating grandstand will save BRL R$2 billion (£351 million/$500 million/(€459 million) from the budget, it is hoped." (from Insidethegames)

$500 million for a 4,000 seat venue?

$500 million for a 4,000 seat venue?

The BBC tell it a bit differently, and perhaps more plausibly:

Rio 2016 organisers have scrapped plans for a 4,000-seater stand at the rowing and canoeing venue as part of a $500m (£353m) cost-cutting measure.

Brazil is in a deep recession that is affecting all aspects of the Olympics, which begin on 5 August.

Only about half of the 4.5 million Olympic tickets aimed at the domestic audience have been sold.

The numbers are much worse for the Paralympics, with only 300,000 out of three million domestic tickets sold.

"We are a bit worried with the Paralympics,'' said organising committee spokesman Mario Andrada. "We have to educate, publicise."

He added: "We have cut some services and made some important corrections.

"We have a balanced budget, with some creative solutions. Many of the future Games will be inspired by what we do today."

Organisers are scaling back in a number of areas to balance the operating budget of £1.3bn, with the proposed grandstand at the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon in central Rio de Janeiro one of the casualties.

The number of unpaid volunteers has also been cut from 70,000 to 50,000.

They might just lose their transportation dream.

The Rio newspaper O Globo reported Paes warned the International Olympic Committee there was an 'elevated risk' that a subway line extension will not be ready for the games.

I think the not having not having the subway extension between Barra and Copacabana is an even bigger problem than all the talk about Zika. From my understanding, travel times between the two areas by road can range from 45 minutes to 2 hours depending on traffic conditions. I would assume that in this case Rio would perhaps open an additional lane for Olympic traffic only.

A risk, but not a certainty:

http://agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br/geral/noticia/2016-02/testes-para-linha-4-do-metro-do-rio-comecam-em-marco
