4gamesandcounting Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I know we talk about favourite Olympic Stadiums all the time - but to put a new twist on an old chestnut (if that mixed metaphor makes sense!) what is your favourite stadium? It doesnt have to be Olympic, better if it isn't in fact. Post a picture, and it would be good to see some stadiums that aren't necessarily world famous - although I guess they mostly will be! Heres mine. I'm not a Man City Fan, but the City of Manchester Stadium in Manchesterm UK is fantatstic to look at I think. I also particularly like the mixture of modern and old England that is apparant in the Queens Club Centre Court (tournament held in London in the run up to Wimbledon) Anybody find a better picture?! I also thought the Aquatic Centre in Atlanta (Olympic configuration) was a neat idea - of not properly thought out in terms of legacy etc.! Again - better picture of this would be awesome!
stevie Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Stadium New Zealand....if its build of course
Rei Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 for me San Siro/Meazza.. although dated it remains a classic.
Guest tokyo2016 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Sapporo Dome (Soccer, Baseball, Concert and more)
Rob2012 Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 That is clever. I never realised the pitch was actually kept outside!
baron-pierreIV Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 That is clever. I never realised the pitch was actually kept outside! It must be to keep the grass alive. That stadium is the Devil's tool!! Here's mine - the Shanghai stadium. I love the roof. The trouble w/ these futuristic stadia is, w/o aerial photography, would the land-bound fasn really be able to appreciate the curves and shapes that are appreciated overhead? Nooooooooooooo.
LinkParkFn Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'd say the Allen Fieldhouse (because I'm a diehard Kansas Jayhawk fan), but since this is for stadia and not arenas, I'm going with the MCG. How could anyone not? Over 150 years old and looks better than ever after the remodeling for the Commonwealth Games. One of the things I HAVE to do before I die is see a cricket or AFL match at the G.
Sir Rols Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I'd say the Allen Fieldhouse (because I'm a diehard Kansas Jayhawk fan), but since this is for stadia and not arenas, I'm going with the MCG. How could anyone not? Over 150 years old and looks better than ever after the remodeling for the Commonwealth Games. One of the things I HAVE to do before I die is see a cricket or AFL match at the G. Yep, it's hard to beat the MCG when it comes to history, amenties and the sheer atmosphere of the place. I don't think UI've been in any stadium that is close to matching the type of atmosphere the MCG has in spades. I was actually at Telstra Stadium last night and gotta say I also think it's under-appreciated. Especially from inside, the lines of its design are just great.
4gamesandcounting Posted November 14, 2006 Author Report Posted November 14, 2006 Went to an AFL Game at the G and Telstra Dome while in Australia - both great stadiums, but the MCG has something special about it - maybe it's the location. I also like the San Siro - good choice! I notice nobody has put down the Delle Alpi as their number one choice! lol
skicross Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 I already know that it is not a Stadium, but i love it (It's the new Ice Palace of Jaca). My favourite Stadium would be the new Valencia's one or the one of Beijing 2008.
Rafa Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Conceptual Design Cape Town 2010 World Cup Stadium
jim jones Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Conceptual Design Cape Town 2010 World Cup Stadium wow mo that stadium in south africa is something. I must admit halifax can have a dream and then keep on dreaming LOL.
Rob2012 Posted November 14, 2006 Report Posted November 14, 2006 Despite the problems, the New Wembley will be the best football stadium in the world when it opens next year. It's a beast.
Rafa Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 according to the dimensions of the cape town stadium its pitch will somehow be larger than that of wembley?? but thats prob including plans for an athletics track..now that plan exclude an athletics track will prob be more on par.... wembley is a beast soccer city at 104,000 capacity for the 2010 finals should also be a beast
baron-pierreIV Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Here's my other favorite... Still unfinished. Says they might complete it by 2016.
jimmyc Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 There doesn't seem to be a lot of support for older stadiums. Here's one, Michigan Stadium, built in 1927, a perfect bowl wiith room for 110,000.
NYCD 2012 Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 FIFA World Cup Stadium , Munich Olymdastation , Berlin
Lee Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 Michigan and Shanghai both look too ugly for me. It is hard to judge most stadia because one of the best reasons for liking a stadium is atmosphere and I've not been to most of them. However, if we are going on sheer good looking stadiums then I would have to say(in no particular order). 1.City of Manchester Stadium 2.Proposed NYC stadium for 2012 3.Stadium Australia 4.Melbourne Cricket Ground 5.New Wembley 6.Athens Olympic Stadium 7.Allianz Arena I've not made up my mind on Soccer City yet. Can't make up my mind whether I love it or hate it.
Rob2012 Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 I think "Soccer City" looks incredible (shame about the name though?!)
4gamesandcounting Posted November 15, 2006 Author Report Posted November 15, 2006 Nice to see people voting for South African stadia. Just worries me a little that most of them are still being referred to as being in a "conceptual stage". Existing in a conceptual drawing is one thing - delivering it on time is another. I am the only one who is looking at Valencia's new stadium and thinking - what's the point?
baron-pierreIV Posted November 15, 2006 Report Posted November 15, 2006 I like the bloody red seats.. CRUEL! That's so the women's bathrooms won't clog with all those tampons.
jimmyc Posted November 16, 2006 Report Posted November 16, 2006 What modern stadiums don't you like? My least favorite is the rebuilt Soldier's Field. Putting a futuristic stadium inside a prewar concrete one was a bad idea. By the way, what events will be held there if Chicago gets the 2016 games?
