Sapporo bid for 2030 Winter Olympics boosted as new poll suggests growing support

“The latest poll perhaps suggests that public anger about the Tokyo 2020 scandal is cooling, with Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto among fans of a potential project.”

“Christophe Dubi, the Olympic Games executive director for the IOC, said this week that six countries were mulling over hosting a future Winter Olympics.”

“The IOC had wanted to confirm a host for 2030 at this year's delayed Session in Mumbai, but those plans have been pushed back to 2024.”

Sapporo Mayor Forging Ahead with 2030 Bid

“ …..Sapporo Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto indicated that he still wanted to forge ahead with the 2030 effort, at least for now, responding to the decision by the JOC to allow Sapporo to be recognized as an official candidate for a bid in 2034 or later.”

“I’m not sure what will happen in the future, but I believe Sapporo must proceed with what it needs to do now in order to host the Games. The most important thing for the city to do is increase support and understanding of local residents amid growing anxiety about the Olympics, in the wake of the Tokyo Games,” he said.”

“If Sweden wins the 2030 race, Sapporo could be in a tough position — forced to choose between challenging a strong Salt Lake City, which has clearly said it wants the 2034 Games, or going after the 2038 Games in the hope that by the time the bid is awarded, local support will be stronger than it is now, and potential international rivals will be weaker.“

Honestly i'm surprised at how attached they are to keep this lost cause alive lmao.

I agree.  Well the Sapporo Mayor will need to get the Japanese Olympic Committee back on board for 2030 if he truly wants to press ahead with a bid, and time’s running out.

Sapporo to abandon 2030 Winter Olympic bid

The northern Japanese city of Sapporo has decided to abandon its bid to host the 2030 Winter Olympics, multiple sources with knowledge of the matter said Thursday.

Mayor Katsuhiro Akimoto is set to meet with Japanese Olympic Committee President Yasuhiro Yamashita in Tokyo on Oct. 11 to confirm the decision.

The move comes amid widespread bribery and bid-rigging scandals surrounding the Tokyo Games held in the summer of 2021 that have soured public sentiment toward hosting the Olympics.

Sapporo, the 1972 host, was once considered the front-runner to host the Winter Olympics for a second time, but the International Olympic Committee appears to have shifted its focus to other candidates.

There are also growing calls inside Japan for Sapporo's Olympic bid to be pushed back to 2034 or later.

Most likely for Sapporo to bid for 2034.

Nope. The mayor has already said even a future bid is on ice right now. We won't see another Olympics in Japan before the 2040s or maybe even 2050.
