Thinking of he likes of Volvo, Saab, H&M, Scandinavian Airways just off the top of my head there should be a strong enough business base to tap into.

How could you forget IKEA! The most famous thing Sweden is known for (at least here in the U.S. anyway).

I thought of IKEA, but didn’t think furniture companies were in the usual range of Olympic sponsors. But now you’ve mentioned it… flat pack bleachers? Flat pack Oly village beds and furnishings?

IKEA was born in Sweden, but it's currently headquartered in the Netherlands.  As much as we associate them with Sweden, it wouldn't be the driving force behind their economic engine.

One more town positive to the games in Sweden.

Solna (where Friends Arena is located) has said that they will provide clearing of snow and garbage. They can't give any arena guarantee since the arena itself is owned by a private company with no municipal participation. Security is also not a municipal responsibility.

SOK has presented an update on venues.

* Sigulda is still in the plans

* Only ice hockey in the city of Stockholm

* Curling in nearby Södertälje

* The rest of the ice events in Friends Arena in Solna (surrounded by Stockholm)

Skating is still up in the air. SOK hopes that someone is interested in paying for an oval in Sweden. Otherwise that will go to Norway or the Netherlands.

Stockholm will "soon" indicate how they see the whole thing but the leader of the municipal executive has reiterated that the city will not take on any financial burdens. She also critisised the national government for lack of communication (city is left and government is right).

Why is the SOK re-drawing plans that seemed to pass muster in the 2026 race?  It feels stupid to be reinventing the wheel again -- like Sweden is some larger country where there are always competing factions and blocs.  While commitments have to be asked again and re-evaluated, it just seems so odd that like they are starting from scratch -- and the WOGs aren't even 1/2 the size of the Summers?

The SOK update today is not really changing anything said earlier this year, just being more specific.

As to the 2026 plans: No one wanted to pay for the new venues in that plan and  more specificly was to prepared to pay to keep them afterwards. Not exactly sustainable. Any bid containing those would presumably be DOA.

Apart from changes due to not building new venues, the plans are as those in 2026.

All the check boxes Sweden needs are slowly but surely being checked off.  I think we can start to look at this bid with guarded optimism.  There is a lot of good going on here in terms of what needs to happen.

The big immediate question is whether the EB (or rather the the four-letter man in charge) is of the same opinion at the end of this month. He should be but ...

it’s a huge indoor stadium!
So it would be an ice rink for short track/figure skating on half the field?
This is a 50,000 seats stadium, so that would be at least 30,000 seats for the ice rink?Kapacitet-sport.jpg

I don't know the details but there definitely should be much more than the required minimum number of seats.

When Friends Arena was built they were smart enough to do it next to an already existing commuter train station so transport capacity is in line with Arena capacity.

And the 15000 seats Avicii Arena + 8000 seats Hovet arena for hockey in Stockholm !

That's very strong for ice venues, isn't it?

And I didn't realize this until I looked it up just now.. those 2 arenas are literally next door to each other.  So that's a perfect set-up for ice hockey

That's way too big for Figure Skating/Short Track.  If they split it in half, they could have Short-Track and/or Curling on one side and Figure Skating in the other.

It could also stage the opening and closing ceremonies possibly.

Niege, this is the Sweden thread.

Sorry ;)I just wanted to show how an indoor stadium was turned into a swimming pool, trying to imagine how it might be for an indoor stadium turned into an ice rink.
I guess it could be quite the same, a skating rink for competition on one half of the field, a stand in the middle and another ice rink for warming up on the other half of the field.

Starting from a 32,000 seats stadium , it is obtained a 17000 seats swimming pool.
So it can be imagine that, starting from the 50,000 seats Friens Arena, it would be obtained an ice rink with about 25000 seats.

More on the Negotiations re sliding events @ Sigulda

Excerpts from the Archysport.com report link below:

  • “It is currently not possible to accurately name the amount needed for the reconstruction of the Sigulda track.”
  • “Exact numbers are extremely difficult to give at the moment. One such indicative figure we have received was the 58 million euros which have already been announced publicly,” said Nātriņš.
  • “We will be able to name the exact costs and estimates when there is clarity about the concept, how this track will be built, about the solutions, when there is clarity, and in general, whether this will be necessary for the organization of the Olympic Games, or will not be. If not, then we will have to look for other solutions to maintain and develop this infrastructure unit.”
  • “The Swedish side has let it be understood that Sigulda could do without a separate Olympic village and would do with a hotel offer, added Steinberg.”
