Valencia 2007

yea it wil be very exciting. It seems as thought Team new Zealand are going to keep key personnel as well and sponsorship is falling into place... Dalton has done a great job and expect team new zealand to be even stronger next time around!

Yeah! I hope Grant Dalton picks himself up quickly and uses his "Whitbread" tenacity to get the job done! Designing the new 27meter IACC yacht will need to start now, especially if the next cup stays in Valencia. Could be time to poach "Shnacks" off Prada.

It's also great to see NZ Public now embracing this event as a general major sports event that excites.

America's Cup now joins the Olympics, CWGs, RWC, CWC and the Netball as regular major must supports!

Bids from the city of Cagliari (Sardinia's main city) and from La Maddalena's archipelago (north east of Sardinia) should be launched soon.

La Maddalena's archipelago, former USA military base host now dismessed, will host the G8 summit in 2009.

Ahhh...Sardinia! High society - High prices!!!

Yes I can remember the 1987 12 meter champs being hosted there and New Zealand Challenge's KZ7 getting revenge on Dennis Conner's Stars and Stripes by winning it, albeit in the protest room! Still great racing though! Even though a bottle of water costed the THEN equvilant of NZ$12.00! AND it was really really hot!!!

Many yachting nations took NZ seriously as a yachting power after this, as the 1987 America's Cup wasn't a "Flash in the Pan" showing by the small nation.

Today in Rome PM Romano Prodi, together with some regional authorities (among who the Sardinia's governor Renato Soru), received Ernesto Bertarelli to officially launch the italian bid to host the 33rd AC.

As a matter of facts two main bids come from Sardinia: La Maddalena's archipelago and the city of Cagliari.

Yachting: Oracle contests Alinghi over Cup set-up

7:44AM Friday July 13, 2007

GENEVA - BMW Oracle's Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC) has contested the way Alinghi has set up the next America's Cup, arguing that it unfairly favours the Swiss defender.

Under the America's Cup rules, the winner decides where, when and how to race the next event, agreeing the details with the first yacht club to challenge them for the "Auld Mug".

After Alinghi won the 32nd America's Cup last week, they signed a protocol for the next event with newly-established Club Nautico Espanol de la Vela (CNEV), agreeing to race in bigger boats. They did not set exact yacht design rules, a time or a place.

"The Alinghi Protocol for the 33rd Americas Cup alters the very nature of the competition giving unprecedented and unfair advantages to the Defender," GGYC said in a statement on Thursday (local time).

"Without the basic elements of regatta venue, date and boat design rules as required by the Deed of Gift (which governs the America's Cup), the Alinghi Protocol provides no opportunity for a fair and equitable competition."

An Alinghi spokeswoman declined to comment.

The GGYC also said the new Spanish club was an illegitimate challenger under the Deed of Gift, which says a challenging yacht club must hold annual races on an arm of the open sea.

CNEV said there were precedents in the 156-year history of the Cup of a new club challenging and a protocol being signed with neither a time nor a place set for the next event.

In an email, it added it was organising two open-sea regattas in northern Spain this year.

The GGYC has now challenged Alinghi itself, rather than putting its name on a list of teams who would fight it out for the right to race Alinghi for the America's Cup. It said it had a lot of support from other clubs in its case.

The Golden Gate challenge is the latest in a line of disputes that have dogged the history of the America's Cup, the most prestigious regatta in sailing.

At the very first race in 1851, members of the British fleet that had been battered by the "America" argued the US schooner had an unfair advantage and may even have had a secret motor.

Most recently, in 1988, New Zealand made a challenge in a huge monohull. The defending San Diego Yacht Club beat them in a zippy catamaran but a final decision over whether the victory was legitimate was held up in court for months.

The GGYC, represented by software billionaire Larry Ellison at the last two America's Cups, said Alinghi could already begin to design their defence while leaving potential challengers in the dark about the new boats they will have to build.

Alinghi have said they will tell other teams where and when the next Cup will be by December 31 and will set the exact rules over how to build the new class boat by the end of the year.

OK, so we have 4 Italian cities on the race: Naples, Cagliari, La Maddalena and Genoa ;)

According to the Valencian media, a rough copy of the contract to host the 33rd AC is already prepared.

The British newspaper The Independent says that the mayor of Valencia, Rita Barbera, is due to announce on Wednesday that the next cup will take place there in July 2009, alongside the first running of a Formula One race which will include the America's Cup port in the street track.

It is also said that the final amount requested by ACM adds up to 110€ million and that the new sponsor will be Rolex!

British team Origin is already sailing on Valencia's waters and preparing for the next AC. Their boat (GBR-75) belonged to Alinghi and was recently bought by the British team.

I'm not sure I see the relevance of testing an old boat when a new specification is set to come in for the next series, but it's nice to see a British interest at least.

TEAM ORIGIN is officially accepted as a challenger for the 33rd America's Cup.

Following the Spanish Club Náutico Español de Vela’s challenge represented by Desafio Español and the South African Royal Cape Yacht Club’s challenge represented by Team Shosholoza, the Royal Thames Yacht Club’s challenge, represented by Sir Keith Mills’ TEAM ORIGIN, becomes the third officially accepted challenge for the 33rd America’s Cup since Alinghi completed its successful defence of the 32nd America’s Cup on 3rd July 2007.
