There's a reason they don't go past 5 on weekdays and 6 on the weekends. Local programming is too valuable to the non-NBC owned affiliates. We do know it's gotta be a plum job for him. But what? Now that we've see Rebecca Lowe as a studio anchor for both NBC and NBCSN, we can perhaps kill off the lovely idea of her being with her NBC Sports Network soccer studio mates like Robbie Earle for NBC's Olympic soccer coverage. It can still happen but what time slots she'll be assigned to for her to perhaps do it remains key. Why not have them all at the outdoor studio overlooking Rio's skyline in a different area discussing soccer like ESPN did with their team when it had the World Cup two summers ago? My guess is that Tirico will be some sort of "venue host" like Dan Patrick was in Vancouver. They'll get Tirico out to a different venue each day/night to set the scene and do some features and interviews. While they're just announcing the NBC and NBCSN hosts today, I'm sure this has been in the works for months, and some of the hosts may even have clauses in their contracts guaranteeing certain assignments for the Olympics. With Tirico joining NBC so close to the Games, it may not have been possible to work him in to hosting role on NBC, and I don't think they would relegate him to NBCSN (yes, they did have Michaels on NBCSN in Sochi, but the NBC daytime coverage was on tape and fairly minimal in 2014). Now that Savannah Guthrie won't be making the trip to Rio, I'd like to see NBC add Tirico as the third host for the opening ceremony. Despite all of the pageantry of the ceremony, it's still a sports event, and NBC really needs a "sports person" in the booth to complement the Today Show crew, who just aren't very knowledgeable about the athletes, sports history, etc. I was watching the clip of Ali lighting the cauldron in Atlanta last week, and Costas and Enberg captured that moment almost perfectly with their commentary. There's no way that Lauer et.al. would handle something like that in the same way. Tirico is very knowledgeable about international sports and would add a lot to the ceremony broadcast. They'll get Tirico out to a different venue each day/night to set the scene and do some features and interviews. While they're just announcing the NBC and NBCSN hosts today, I'm sure this has been in the works for months, and some of the hosts may even have clauses in their contracts guaranteeing certain assignments for the Olympics. I have to agree with you about that. What made Ali light the flame so memorable at least to me was how Costas and Enberg handled that. that was one moment where you have two of the best sportscasters at NBC(at that time anyway) handling that moment, and they did it right. i don't think the the Today Show crew would be able to do what Costas and Enberg did that night in Atlanta in 96. that was one moment where those two guys shined and for a good reason. They were the best in the business. They also had the right words for that moment. that, along with John Tesh calling the U.S. women's gymnastics team winning gold, and CBC's Don Wittman on the Canadian team's success in track, were the two most memorable calls i heard during those games. Durban Sandshark Posted June 16, 2016 Report Share Posted June 16, 2016 That would be a great idea for Tirico with his knowledge on the international sports scene and can ID nations and some of their notable/principal athletes beyond the American ones as they march at Maracana Stadium being "the sports guy", something NBC OC hosts lacked since Costas took himself out of the game. Not even the Today crew would know some of that despite being involved in more serious news and know the nations. Then again, like many of us Americans, they would not know much about the sports landscape outside of the USA, even including Canada and Mexico. Agree also on the NBC hosting with him entering being so close to the final planning stages. He could do the hosting with Tokyo, but that's far away.
