Glasgow 2014

While it doesn't 'try' to look like an Olympic torch - I think it looks better than any recent torch, especially Sochi, London and Vancouver- which IMO are all somewhat subpar (although London's is certainly eye catching). It would make a wonderful Olympic torch.

...and the cost of making 8000 of these would be? :P

If there's only one baton, how does the granite thing work? Is there 70 of them in the base?

Yes, it works exactly like a PEZ dispenser.

:) Oh yeah its one of the best Batons in ages, at least since 1994.

The previous four were too full of technical stuff that was pointless, like 2002s that could read heartbeats...but probibly tried to remind the world of the marvels of the electronic age.

Nup...good to see a basic yet very stylish Baton looking baton that isn't trying too hard to look like a torch.

Is the granite curling-stone thing in the top Scotland's one, & all the other ones are in the base?

The baton contains a granite ‘gemstone’ which will be gifted to each nation and territory. Housed at the very top of the baton, it is released only by opening a clever puzzle mechanism. The gemstones, made of granite unique to Scotland, were sourced from Ailsa Craig in the firth of Clyde, crafted by Kays of Scotland, and embellished by jewellers from Glasgow School of Art.

So the gemstone is put into the top of the Baton before arriving in the country and then taken off and given to that country as a momento.

The security company criticised for failing to provide enough staff for the London Olympics has made a bid to be part of the Commonwealth Games when they are staged in Glasgow next year.

G4S bosses admitted the company's handling of London 2012 was a "humiliating shambles".

It had to pay £70m in compensation to organising committee Locog, which used about 3,500 soldiers to plug the gaps.

Commonwealth Games organisers have broken up the security detail for 2014.

They have opted to award contracts to a number of different companies to spread the risk and avoid a repeat of what happened in London.

A G4S spokesperson told BBC Scotland that, with 5,000 staff in Scotland, the company was well placed to bid for Glasgow 2014 security contracts.

"We already work for Hampden Park, Ibrox Stadium, and the new Hydro Arena, and have unrivalled experience at major events such as T in the Park and RockNess," said the spokesperson.

"So as the existing provider of stewarding services at a number of Games venues, we are participating in the process to be included in the framework to continue to provide these services during the Games.

"We can confirm we are not bidding to be part of the guarding framework."

Keith Vaz, chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, is adamant G4S should not be bidding for contracts.

He questioned the company's directors over the failure to provide enough members of security staff for the London Olympics.

He said he was "astonished" that they should be bidding and described them as "shameless".

Significantly fewer staff will be required in Glasgow than in London and the overall security budget will be in the region of £90m compared to an Olympic budget of more than £550m.

They wouldn't give it to them, would they?

What if you can't solve the puzzle? You get a coupon instead of the little granite thing? Too bad it doesn't make a cup-a-koffi.

The Asian leg of the Baton relay has ended and it now moves on to Oceania

And funnily enough, I was just about to post this:

Melbourne snubbed in Commonwealth Games baton relay

Melbourne Lord Mayor Robert Doyle is "smacking my forehead in disbelief" after Melbourne was left off the itinerary for the Commonwealth Games baton relay.

The 2014 Glasgow Games baton is touring Perth today after arriving in Australia last night.

It will go to the Gold Coast, Canberra, Townsville and Cairns in its six-night visit.

But Victoria has been ignored altogether, despite Melbourne being the most recent Australian city to host the games in 2006.

Mr Doyle told Neil Mitchell he was "gobsmacked", and said his council would help make a visit happen.

"I can not believe it," he said.

"It seems bizarre that it goes to these cities like Canberra and some Queensland cities, but not to us.

"I hope it's not too late for them to reschedule ... we'll help them."

Mr Doyle agreed with Neil Mitchell's suggestion of taking the baton down the Flemington straight.

"On Monday, we'll take the Melbourne Cup though the streets of Melbourne and we'll get 70,000 to 80,000 people in the streets just to see the cup.

"You could actually honour our Commonwealth Games athletes and the people who made a contribution to the games back in 2006."

Neil Mitchell said it was "a missed opportunity".

"But I think it might be too late to do anything about it."
