The Lusofonia Games, inspired by the Commonwealth Games and the Francophon Games, is the game for all countries and regions which share the common Portuguese heritage. Participate teams will come from all members and associate members of The Association of the Portuguese Speaking Olympic Committees (ACOLOP), which inculdes formal members Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Macao (China), Mozambique, Portugal, Sao Tome & Principe, East Timor and the associate members Equatorial Guinea, India (mostly from Goa) and Sri Lanka. The host Macau was a Portuguese settlement at the South China coast since the 17th century. It was handover to China in 1999. Afer the handover Macau becomes a Special Autonomy Region in China, who enjoys full autonomy apart from dipolmatic and military affairs. The Portuguese language is still an official language in Macau. A recreation of the sinking of the Lusitania?") would be in the farthest colony -- and not in Portugal or Brazil. What's next? The: - Alemagnophone Games (Germany, Austria, Switzerland, RSA, one of the Congos) - the Belgique Games (w/ our very own Mlle. Tradeau being 'Chief Bitch' spokeswoman of the Games) (Belgium and the Belgian Congo) - the Mezo-American, pre-Columbian Games (the descendants of the Mayans, Incas, Aztecs, the Olmecs, the Toltecs, etc.) THis will feature Games that 'palenque' Games with the losing team being hurled to death!! - the Silent Games (all Deaf attendees; no need for Official spoken language) -- probably the quietest AND most universal of ALL!! - the Romany Games (i.e., the Gypsies. And why shouldn't these games exist? Portuguese is one of the most globally spoken languages (+200 million) and is official in quite some countries. And, most important, despite all the colonialism the lusophone countries share a great deal of friendship among themselves. Macau was chosen, because of the experience and available infrastructures (they just hosted the East-Asian Games and will host the 2nd Asian Indoor Champs). Why should they had been in Portugal or Brazil? Weren't the first CWG in Hamilton, Canada? And the fisrt Jeux de la Francophonie in... Morocco? Anyway, the 2nd Lusophony Games will be indeed held in Portugal in 2009 and most likely, by Brazil in 2013. The OC was very well organized with a show artistic and culturally very rich. A sample of the cultures of the 4 continents participating (chinese dances, brazilian samba and vibe, portuguese fado and folklore dances, african tribal beats), the parade of delegations, the speeches, the raising of the flags and the lighting of the cauldron. Aqui no Brasil, há alguns meses atrás criaram o primeiro museu totalmente dedicado a língua natal: o Português, no mundo, fica em São Paulo, em uma histórica estação de trens. Agora os Jogos Lusofônicos, excelente oportunidade pra integrar mais os países que falam essa língua. Viva Portugal que introduziu a língua nos países. Viva o Brasil, que apesar de do território continental, preserva-a do Iapóque ao Chuí(municipíos extremos brasileiros, norte e sul). Viva os países africanos que a acolheram como língua oficial. Are you sure Brazil can handle the smaller Games? I mean they're only going for the World Cup and the Olympic Games. It may not be that way in other communities... but among the portuguese-speaking countries there is an intimate and strong sense of belonging and unity. The fact a country could be or not far superior than the rest, sporting-wise, does not damage at all the pride of BEING at the Games. A good example is East Timor - they had no preparation for these Games YET they gladly came to Macau and played all the sports they could. Other member countries actually PAID east-timorese expenses, so they could be there If they didn't intend to organize such 'smaller games' as you put it - why the bid? I believe the brazilians would be very glad to host such a new, still-growing event... among their bigger bids at WC 2014 and OG 2016. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I wasn't mentioning the event's growth by adding more countries/regions (it's hard, but not impossible) but by adding more athletes, through more sports (handball, swimming...) Sir Rols Posted November 10, 2012 Report Share Posted November 10, 2012 Now Portuguese Commonwealth Games under cloud The Portuguese Commonwealth Games due in Goa a year from now seem to be going the way the preparations for the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games went - at least as far as controversy is concerned. After years of stumbling and struggling to create adequate infrastructure for the sporting event of Portuguese-speaking nations, a ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator has now raised the banner of revolt against the Games. Vishnu Wagh, a firebrand legislator, has said that it was "ridiculous" and "out of place" for Goa to "even participate, forget hosting the Games", because Goa was neither Portuguese-speaking nor a nation. "The Lusofonia Games are for those nations who are Portuguese-speaking. Goa is not a nation. Neither is Goa Portuguese-speaking. So what is the basis of our state hosting the games?" Wagh asked. The Lusofonia Games are being organised by the Goa government along with the Associacao dos Comites Olimpicos de Lingua Oficial Portuguesa (ACOLOP), a collective of officials from Portuguese-speaking nations, in charge of conducting the Games held every four years. Apart from sports like football, athletics, judo, table tennis and swimming, the Games also feature events like sepak takraw, a cross-bred sport with elements of volleyball and football and futsal, an abridged, but swift-paced football variation. Over a dozen countries, including Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique, Cape Verde and Angola participate in the games. Wagh said that the state was unnecessarily committing resources for the Games, especially at a time when the state economy was facing an economic downturn following the ban on iron ore mining. "Let us create infrastructure where our boys can play. We do not need to spend these huge volumes of money for these games. It is a waste. I am going to raise the issue with my party. I am also willing to take the issue to the people, if need be," Wagh said. Goa, a Portuguese colony from 1498 to 1961, won the bid for the games in 2009, when the state was ruled by a Congress-led coalition government. The bidding process in Lisbon was aggressively backed by Congress state president Subhash Shirodkar, who was then president of the Goa Olympic Association (GOA). However, from 2009, promises made by the Goa government to the ACOLOP as far as creating infrastructure for hosting of the games were not honoured, leading the ACOLOP to even threaten that Goa might be dropped as the venue. Added to that were controversies and scandals which dropped out of Goa's Lusofonia cupboard, with the opposition targeting then sports minister Manohar Azgaonkar for giving clearances to five-star hotels and other mega projects in the guise of creating sports infrastructure. After the BJP stormed to power earlier this year, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and the new president of the Goa Olympic Association (GOA), however, laid out the red carpet for ACOLOP officials, promising them delivery of the infrastructure for the Games before November 2013. "We can have modern stadiums. We have the time. In fact, we will strive to have everything in place three or four months before the start of the games in November," Parrikar said. NY Daily News Dear!
