I ONLY WAS JOKING WITH BARON!!! CANADA 2018 IS A TOTAL JOKE!!! :D  :P

I SAY CANADA SHOULD HOST 2018 BECAUSE BARON IS SAYING AGAIN AND AGAIN THAT THE CONCACAF SHOULD HOST 2018 BUT WHEN HE REFERS TO THE CONCACAF HE REFERS TO THE USA, AND THE USA HOSTED IN 1994, SO I TOLD BARON THAT IF THE CONCACAF SHOULD HOST 2018 THEN CANADA OR MEXICO SHOULD BE THE HOSTERS.... :upside:

Canada dose have A-League soccer, the problem is that most of the leagues in North America are both Canadian and American.

Canada is not as big of a joke as you would think, we have the under 21 tourney in 2006 or 07 and probably 2011 women's world cup will come down to Australia or Canada, so he do have a history of hosting, not to mention 2003

true, but mexico has hosted twice

i would think if Canada continues hosting the smaller events... eventually the soccer infrastructure will be in place to have a very good WC bid .... though not for 2018 -- maybe 2030 - 2038

Don't forget USA94 was the most heavily attended World Cup in history and lots of Americans and Mexicans would make the trip so along with the host country fans and the rest of the world attendance wouldn't be a problem. Canada has the expertise and experience to easily pull this off!! Best of luck to Canada2018

Thank you, olympiaspirit.  That's what I've been trying to tell all these folks here but they are obviously playing possum and blind.  Check out the "Australia bid" thread.  World CUP USA 1994 was the MOST SUCCESSFUL WORLD CUP ATTENDANCE - and could only be topped by 2010.

"Could be" being the operative word.

But we are a 'primitive' soccer country.  So what does it matter that the USA would be the convenient, equidistant point for some 100+ million Canadians and Mexicans to come over and enjoy another World Cup all over again in 2018!  Ha!!   :P

Let's stir up some more discussion here.....B)

I just felt like bumping this thread back up from the dead since there's all this talk about 2018 potentially headed back to CONCACAF for 2018 if the rotational system is kept in place. I'm not saying Canada will win the event but if FIFA decides that they will keep the rotation system intact then I believe Canada will submit a bid just for the hell of it with the USA, Mexico, and maybe token CUBA..lol The president of the Canadian Soccer Association has said Canada would definately be interested in bidding if its coming back to the North and Central America region.

Blatter discusses 2018 World Cup bid

Canadian Press

2/28/2007 6:26:40 PM

LONDON (CP) - FIFA may assign the 2018 World Cup to its North and Central American and Caribbean region, raising the possibility that Canada could be in the mix for hosting soccer's showcase event.

Sepp Blatter, the president of soccer's governing body, discussed upcoming World Cups on Wednesday before meeting with Treasury Minister Gordon Brown - the man expected to replace British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

"We have decided in the FIFA executive committee that rotation will be installed, and we have made rotation until and including 2014. The executive committee must take a decision whether the rotation should include all the confederations, in which case the 2018 World Cup should be in CONCACAF," Blatter said.

Canadian Soccer Association president Colin Linford said the comments caught him by surprise.

"We'd obviously be interested (if) FIFA was looking for someone in North America to host," Linford said.

Canada will host the FIFA Under-20 World Cup this year and will likely put in a bid to host the women's World Cup in 2011. Linford said if a bid is put in for 2018, it would likely be made four or five years from now.

The United States (1994) and Mexico (1970, 1986) are the only members of the Confederation of North and Central American and Caribbean Football who have hosted men's World Cups.

Blatter also said it was possible FIFA's executive committee could assign the 2018 tournament to Asia.

"They could also decide that the Americas should be considered as one, and then rotation would go to Asia," he said, adding that China and Australia had both indicated they might bid.

The U.S. Soccer Federation's board gave the go-ahead Friday to bid for the tournament. The British government has said it would support a campaign to host the World Cup for the first time since 1966, when England won its only title.

The 2002 tournament was played in Japan and South Korea, last year's edition was played in Germany and the 2010 World Cup is scheduled for South Africa. FIFA said the 2014 tournament will be in South America, and Brazil and Colombia have announced plans to bid. The decision will be made in November, and Brazil is the strong favourite - Blatter called Colombia's bid "more a public relations presentation."

Since England last hosted the tournament, the World Cup has been played in the other four major European soccer countries - Germany (1974, 2006), Spain (1982), Italy (1990) and France (199 . England's Premier League is the most successfully marketed of the European leagues, and several new stadiums have opened in recent years.

Following the Hillsborough stadium tragedy in 1989, when 96 people were crushed to death at a FA Cup semifinal between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest, English soccer has modernized most of its grounds and created all-seat stadiums that have high-tech security and no fences surrounding fields.

"Because of the big disaster in '89 in Sheffield, the government has taken a decision which is now applied everywhere in sports arenas, especially in football, and this shall be an example to everybody around the world," Blatter said.

"Comfort and security are in stadia where everybody is sitting, and if you have no fences and you don't need 200 policemen because you have stewards. If this example had been applied to all other big stadia and big leagues in Europe, some of the big associations in Europe would not be facing the problems they are facing."

Blatter was impressed by the wealth generated by the English club soccer.

"The way the Premier League is organized and the way it's marketed, it's remarkable," he said. "The money coming into the Premier League is exceptional. English football is shown everywhere in the world. I was in Africa and Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and you cannot open a TV channel without watching the Premier League."

Development and awareness. First time host. ;) lol

Somewhat offtopic but I'm just curious what the USA were ranked in 1988 when they were awarded the hosting right for 1994. Anyone know?

Can't find records that far back, but on Dec 93, 6 months before the start of the World Cup, the USA was ranked 22nd while Canada was ranked 44nd.

The USA was able to advance into the second round in 94.

What would be the cities and stadiums that Canada would use for the World Cup, keeping in mind that at least nine cities would be needed?

Shame about the fact that the wealth doesn't go to where it's really needed but hey, why should Blatter give a stuff about that?

Its all about money with FIFA; Where can they get the most.

But to FIFAs and especially Blatters credit, they have tried to help the game in developing areas such as Africa, where the 2010 World Cup will be held in South Africa.

Perhaps give some confidence in the international community that a "low-ranking nation" could host the Men's World Cup, too? That could be stupid, but other than the Russian Federation, the rest of the G8 has hosted this event.

As for possible World Cup venues in Canada, Calgary and Winnipeg would definitely be added in this case, from the U-20 World Cup venues list.

Cities would be the eight Canadian cities to have a CFL team (Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Winnipeg and Hamilton). Ottawa would also be chose while Halifax and Quebec City would also probably be used. Stadium wise, Toronto (Roger's Center) and Edmonton (Commonwealths Stadium) are probably the only stadiums in which the WC could be hosted whit little work. If roofed stadium would be aloud by FIFA, Montreal (Olympic Stadium) and Vancouver (B.C. Place) would also be suitable host. This would be crucial if Canada is to bid, since the Olympic Stadium and B.C. Place are the biggest and the fourth biggest stadiums in Canada, respectively. However, stadiums in Hamilton, Calgary, Winnipeg , Regina and Ottawa can all be expanded over 50 000 seats (excluding Hamilton, which can be expanded to 43 000 seats). If the CFL is to expand before 2018 (which is likely), new stadiums may be required for Halifax, Quebec City or another city in the country. Also, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers are apparently interested in building a new stadium.

Doesn't FIFA like the idea of brand new state of the art stadiums being built for the Cup? I doubt they'll award a winning bid that's just going to use existing stadiums in this time of day. Mind you it has happened in the past such as USA94 but lately winning bids are building brand new stadiums.

Fox334, Calgary would need a "complete new stadium" to potentially satisfy that FIFA requirement. However, if Edmonton could do it, why cannot Calgary? Believe me, I still trying to come up with an answer to that question.

By the way, I found this in the CBC website.

Canada would need new stadiums in Vancouver, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Quebec City, Halifax plus major upgrades to Edmonton to even think about a WC. Commonwealth Stadium is an eyesoar and not what is expected for a FIFA Men's World Cup

If Canada wants a WC in the next 30 years this country needs to invest to top tier expandable stadiums.

Vancouver, Toronto and Montreal should all have stadiums that are in the range of 60,000 that can be expandable to 80 to 90,000.

Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Hamilton and Quebec City should each have a 40,000 seater that can expand to 50,000 to 60,000

Saskatoon and Halifax should have stadiums of about 30,000 that can go up to 40,000 to 45,000.

Also with these stadiums there needs to be creative thinking of how to use them more and non-traditional events with them.
