For this we will exclude the worldwide Olympic sponsors, the TOP ones, from this--McDonald's, Coca-Cola, Visa, Kodak, Panasonic, Samsung, Omega (?), Atos Origin, and Lenovo(?). Feel free to ID what the companies are for the benfit of those who aren't familiar to them. To start things off, I'll kick off with the USA's sponsors: John Hancock (insurance company) General Electric NBC (which GE owns) AT&T Home Depot (massive hardware chain known to employ some US Olympian hopefuls) Bank of America Nike Hilton Hotels Allstate (insurance company) United Airlines Kellogg's General Motors 24 Hour Fitness (health club chain) Jet Set Sports Johnson & Johnson Tyson Foods (known for its chicken products) Incidently, GM is letting its sponsorship with the US Olympic Team expire following the Beijing Olympics as it restructures its marketing investments, citing the one with the USOC hasn't given its bang for their bucks. Also, among TOP sponsors. Lenovo is a Chinese company (but w/ 2 plants in the US) and Atos-Origin (I think) is a French-based company just put together to serivce the IOC (and maybe FIFA and other sports federations) and their needs. I don't believe it existed before Athens 2004. Finally, it would've been nice if Boeing joined...so Boeing goes Beijing!! Of course they may join if Chicago gets the 2016 nod. I don't believe it existed before Athens 2004. Atos existed long before Athens and was not created to service the IOC.... At one point, SEMA Group, an IT company involved in the Olympics since Barcelona, was merged with Atos Group which is how Atos-Origin became a Top Sponsor. Oh, OK; I knew it was something along those lines. But I believe the withdrawal of IBM and the gap it left, and the special needs of the Olympics (and similar events), provided the impetus for SEMA and Atos to get together and get the Olympic contract -- don't u think so? Also, I think the IBM-powered Sydney 2000 website was the best designed and featured in recent memory overall. That even featured stuff including essays about multicultural Sydney, which I wish I could've printed out. It even had the national anthems of the participating nations to download and play. Lenovo and John Hancock are Olympic TOP sponsors. John Hancock is known as Manulife outside the US after the merger with it in 2004. Recently in ad on Sports Illustrated signifying the one year countdown of the Beijing Olympics had the USOC's current sponsors at the bottom of it. John Hancock was featured, so that's how I found out about its continuation. You can check it out here. Amazing Awaits--USOC I think it's just for different Olympic sports possibly like gymnastics that Allstate covers since John Hancock/Manulife is a TOP sponsor. Actually Paris 1924 was the first and only time advertising signage were out at the venues. Four years later the IOC made a stipulation against advertising signs and billboards at Olympic venues. Also Canadian-based Manulife (John Hancock to us Yanks) will leave after Beijing too with Johnson and Johnson and Lenovo having to renew their respective sponsorships at that time too to stay in. I can see Fuji Film stepping up in Kodak's place. Mitsubishi Motors announced it serve as the official motor company for the Australian Olympic Committee up to London 2012. More can be read here. Possibly... Yes, Lenovo is dropping its sponsorship after Beijing. My only thoughts about this is perhaps Lenovo wanted to go out after next year because the Games were to be set in China. I hardly see any Lenovo computers whenever I stop by at an electronic shop anyway, so to me it's no great loss. I'm back at this after an absence.
