yoshi
You can almost hear the IOC trying to think of ways they could get round the 2 year gap & just give SLC 2030. That'd give France more time to prepare or even open Switzerland for 34, & avoid 2 European Games in a row - far more sensible for all concerned if it wasn't for the gap. Could they get around it? Edit: also interesting mentions of 2050 & 70 - suggests to me that if they go ahead with the semi-permanent rotation pool, there'd only be 4-5 cities in it... If I recall correctly, the US doesn't want it in 2030 because of the overlap with LA28. 2034 gives more time for sponsors to get on board with a distinctly separate event. cfm Jeremie
I think the IOC and Salt Lake have been trying for the last few years to get around the gap… 2 years (and actually it is more a year and a half) is just too short an activation period for a marketing partner (at least for the tier 1). Plus let’s not forget that, with 2032 the last edition within NBC current deal, having 2034 secured for the US will place the IOC in a good position to start the next broadcast rights negociation in the US. baron-pierreIV
As the marketing gods know better, a WC26, LA28 and SLC30 would just create Big-Sports Event fatigue -- not to mention 2028 is a US presidential election year and each year, you have the Super Bowls, each one trying to get bigger than the previous one! Putting SLC 2034 is the best option for everyone around.
FYI
"and actually it is more a year and a half" Yeah, people always seem to never realize that from July 2028 to Feb. 2030 is really only 18 months. Those missing six months can mean a world of difference to organizers when it comes to an event of this magnitude. Had L.A. 2028 not have been in the picture, SLC would've gotten 2030 long ago. That said, though, it's still interesting that SLC nearly won 1998 on the coat tails of Atlanta 1996 (not to mention the WC in 1994). Granted, those were different times back then, & the Olympics, both summer & winter, have also grown quite a bit since, but still interesting nonetheless. True - almost harks back to the 1930s with Lake Placd/LA and Garmisch/Berlin.

At the time, it was actual policy to award both to the same country if feasible AFAIK, it wasn‘t independent of each other like today.
