Rio 2016's comments:

The Rio committee said the 10 employees were engaging in conduct "contrary to the ethical principles and mutual trust shared by the two organizations."

"Those involved were identified and the leadership of Rio 2016 and LOCOG acted jointly and quickly to repair the situation," the Brazilian organizers said in a statement. "All of the documents were recovered and returned, and the employees were dismissed by Rio 2016."

The committee called it an "isolated case," noting that about 200 Rio employees were represented in London during the Olympics and Paralympics.

"All of the activities of Rio 2016 are guided by the principles of ethical behavior, responsibility and transparency," it said.

The nature and content of the London files was not immediately known. However, London officials said the documents likely would have been provided to the Rio team had they requested them.

Top-level London officials were notified of the downloading and informed Rio organizers, headed by Carlos Nuzman and Leo Gryner.

It was first reported Thursday by Brazilian journalist Juca Kfouri on the UOL.com web portal. Kfouri is also a columnist at the Foha de S. Paulo newspaper, Brazil's largest. His report said the London files included information about strategic planning and security.

"It's an issue between Rio and London, which they have dealt with," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams told the AP.

Wow, that's really cheeky and embarrassing.

I wonder what Danny will have to say about this. Really breaks the trust between organizations. I wonder what the Russians stole in Vancouver?

What can I say?

Mistakes and/or bad people are everywhere...

At least, Rio 2016 Committee fired them all at first glance and asked apologies to LOCOG that already accepted it.

One thing are people hired to do the job and make a huge mistake, other is the organization of the games...

Just don't mix the things...

It's not a great start to the four years for Rio.

<_<

It sounds like they've dealt with it properly though; best to get rid of these people now than find out in three years they're a liability.

Already fired... It's hard to the head of Committee control everything everybody is doing all the time.

At least the correct thing was done almost instantly: fire them all.

Thanks for the <_< Danny but if you'd read my whole post rather than just the first sentence, you'd see I pretty much agree with you. Rio seems to have dealt with it promptly which is a good sign for any future bumps in the road. But it's still not good as one of the first post-London news stories out of Rio.

They dealt with it quickly, but how were so many corrupt people promoted to high positions in the first place? 10 is a lot. And they didn't cook this up all on their own. Someone told them what to look for. Add the Havelange scandal to this and it is giving me a very shady picture of Brazil.

They MUST rename that stadium....

I agree with your thoughts...

I think you should have not liked when people said "Oh, the terrorist attacks were not a good start to London"... I didn't like either all the crap they said about London on "bad start".

^^If I answer, I'll be the defensive...

In Brazil, they stadium is known as "Engenhão"... People abroad who are used to "Havelange Stadium".

Like Maracana's names is not "Maracana Stadium", but "Journalist Mario Filho Stadium"... In Brazil, few outside Rio could name the stadium as "Mario Filho".

PS: How about the Salt Lake scandal or Florida endless recounting of votes or a huge list of other scandals some idiots did in US???

I don't have a shaddy picture of USA because of this... Much otherwise...

USA is a country I truly admire.

The SLC bribery scandal was wrong and bad (as were the other bribes that were not proven). In the same way, Rio stealing documents was wrong and bad. I don't see your point. Yes, there are bad things (and far worse things) that occur all over the world every day. That doesn't mean we should be at peace with them or quietly ignore them. Rio seriously screwed up. I don't personally believe that it was just one or two bad apples. Someone told them what to do.

As for Florida, Bush won the state. It wasn't shady. If you've got a problem with the electoral college system -- fine (so do I). But it wasn't immoral or unethical.

Danny, the thing here is the VETTING of the employees. Let me tell you the security checks of at least LA -1984. When I showed up for my FIRST interview, and while I was waiting to be called in. I said I wanted to use the rest room. They said: OK, please wait one minute, You have to be escorted. So like it was some jail or what, while I pee'ed, there was a male staffer there keeping an eye for me...just in case I was a trouble-maker or what. I had never encountered that before; not even at the U.N. But I understood that those are the stringent measures necessary so that the Org Committees have really, really TRUSTED personnel working for them.

That is what we are shocked about. These were "200" trusted staffers who would be heading up Rio 2016 over the next 5 years, and you had these 10 with very shady doings.

Also, Danny, how can you equate "the terrorist moments that hit London" with this inside theft thing. One was a random act by definite malfeasants. The theft was an INSIDE job wherein one organization is sharing its secrets and INNER workings with the new kid in the block; and they do that. That is like if you had a guest or a worker for you stealing your secrets right in your house.

Two VERY DIFFERENT scenarios!!

Glad to know that it was addressed promptly. Hope those 10 don't show up in the organization down the line.

My final thoughts on this issue:

1 - I don't like "bad start for any city" statements, whatever the reason, whatever the city...

2 - I'm not deffending any stupid guy from Rio committee who made this theft. Indeed, IMO, they should go to jail

3 - I don't see any coordinated act from Rio Committee. Even LOCOG already said if Rio2016OC wanted any information, they would release it and Rio2016OC knew that.

4 - Nice to know how things works... If London people saw Rio people stealing things. They should get these people and send to jail.

5 - Rio 2016 OC address the problem, fired the bad people, asked apologies to LOCOG, what else you guys want Rio to do?

That's final for me.

Yes, there are bad things (and far worse things) that occur all over the world every day.

So, this makes the entire mankind shady to you?

No...

And 10 idiots from Rio 2016 OC should not make entire Brazil shady to you too.

Foul play or Faux Pas, I hope Nuzman's head is the next to roll. Better for Rio 2016 and Brazilian Olympic Committee.

Don't think so. He was very quick and fired everybody...

Differently from Teixeira, Nuzman is a very very smart guy.

To lighten to mood, here's Paul Taylor's take on the whole thing:

Gosh why would Brazil want to steal info from the London 2012 OC. What would they possibly learn A. Offend the North Korean Soccer team in Glasgow by displaying the South Korean Flag beside members of their team. B. Fail in the drive for full compliment of security staff via the worlds largest security company C. have empty stands for prime events such as Michael Phelps swimming D. take 500,000 tickets for the soccer tournament off the market for lack or interest in the Birthplace of Soccer. E. Cellular systems breaking down during the Mens road course bike race. F. a leaking roof for the Velodrome during the Cycling competition. G. Break downs of the Subway system that required re routing. IF anything the RIO staff might have garnered how to avoid London s problems. The UK again makes like they have super organization skills when indeed the results dont show that."

I think I enjoyed reading that a bit too much!

Nothing.

Basically, in some of the football venues it was decided a couple of months before the Games that there was no point selling tickets in the upper-tiers as the demand wasn't there. They decided it would be better to fill the lower tiers rather than have fans scattered about everywhere. The London 2012 football tournament had some quite low attendences in the early rounds outside of London, but had some superb attendences at many, many matches and of course Wembley was always packed (including record attendences for Olympic Women's Football). Of course, Mr Diatribe ignores the successes completely.

The fact that other people do wrong things does not absolve Rio.

Totally agreed.

But this does not absolve Rio Commitee. Rio de Janeiro 6-million people have nothing to do with the theft directly.

And sorry, but it's not a good way to kick off the next four years.

<_< Sorry, don't like these kind of statement.

Anyway, my point is: because of few idiots now you have a "shady" image of entire Brazil?

Ok, then.

I never said all Brazil is immoral. I do think there's evidence of multiple episodes of corruption in high level sports organization. When I wrote "Rio" I meant Rio 2016. Some countries have more corruption than others (such as Italy). I'm getting the impression that Brazil may be more corrupt than some. Of course all Brazilians are not corrupt, just like all Italians are not corrupt.

I can't deny we really have problems with corruption in Brazil, but you're right, in the world ranking of corruption, Italy is ahead of us.

At same time, never corrupion was so punished like lately... President Dilma already fired 8 Ministers (equivalent to national secretary in USA) since 2011.

Just now, the Brazilian Supreme Court is judging a huge corruption scandal and already send dozens of people to jail. It's the "century judgement" as media is claiming here.

Ok, now it's really final to me...

I will not discuss more about this incident... It's sad, it was a shame, it's already solved and bad people punished. The end.
