Loved the development of the games.

The Aquatics Centre is simply great and makes Maria Lenk in Rio a high-school venue.

The soccer/football stadium is also very nice and moden!!!

I don't like much the PanAmerican Village, too simple and a bit weird.

The torch is nice (but reminds a cigar, hey Havana, they stolen your idea!).

Anyway, anxious for the games, Mexico will do great, for sure!

Good lucky! smile.gif

How can you call the Maria Lenk in Rio a high-school venue?

How can you call the Maria Lenk in Rio a high-school venue?

About size... The Mexican venue looks so big and modern.

Maria Lenk - it hurts me to say - does not. It looks small and not modern anymore.

Okay, FINA changes requirements for Olympic venues size after Rio started Maria Lenk. smile.gif

I'm interested in seeing who will be on the American and Caribbean teams, especially after both the IAAF and FINA have their World Championships.

I recall the United States having a decent track and field team in Rio, although none of the big stars were present.

Canada is taking the approach of sending only athletes that will benefit in their Olympic pursuits. So sports with Olympic qualification or Pan American qualification early in 2012 are going to have A level teams.

Anyways sports that have qualifcation:

Canoe/Kayaking Flatwater (Canada is sending their top athletes that don't qualify via the WC)

Diving (Despite will be there to try and ensure a 3m qualification)

Equestrian (I am unsure about eventing and jumping, but Dressage is important, with the US already qualifying through the WC, Canada and Brazil should qualify)

Field Hockey (Canada vs. Argentina again, hopefully we get lucky again.)

Handball (Canada doesn't stand a chance)

Modern Penthalon

Shooting

Synchronized Swimming (With the US's decline Canada should ensure a full team)

Table Tennis

Water Polo (this is the big one, Canada needs to beat the US and ensure qualifcation here because it isn't any easier at the last chance tournament)

So all told as many as a 100 athletes could ensure an Olympic birth in Guadalajara.

For swimming a B team will be sent and the non-olympic sports will all send their top teams. Equestrian Jumping/Eventing Canada has already qualified. For the Men's water polo team they will play USA in the quarterfinals (at the world championships) and the winner of that will play Hungary if the winning team beats Hungary they secure an Olympic berth leaving the other team to beat Brazil at the Pan American Games to qualify.

There is no way either Canada or the USA is going to beat Hungary.

Most likely, there might be a few individual athletes that make the trek for competition experience. Canada has a terrible method of qualification, its not just setting the require times, distances etc, but you have to set them at the Canadian Championships next year. Plus the Canadian standards are usually higher then IAAF and FINAs.

Its open to the athletes if they want to go. USA did beat Montenegro and Hungary beat Montenegro by just one goal at the world championships so its possible.

Chivas will play it's final match on the Omnilife Stadium this saturday against Monterrey, and starting from this weekend, they will hand over the stadium to Fivecurrents in order to be prepared for the Opening Ceremonies of the Pan Am Games.

Also, like gotosy said, next friday will be the lightning ceremony of the Pan Am Flame at the Teotihuacan Pyramids, a ceremony reminiscing of the Olympia one

Also, although the athletics stadium is going fast, it's still suffering of some problems...

Opening of the Athletics Stadium postponed

The Copag had already acknowledged that the Athletics Stadium Pan complex is going slower than the rest. A. HINOJOSA

He advised the IAAF to reschedule the date of approval of the Pan-American track to install

The Jalisco Athletic Association reports that the delay in the works are ready to prevent a national championship in late September

-They have a month to complete eight stages

GUADALAJARA, JALISCO (18/AGO/2011) .- The president of the Athletic Association of Jalisco, Francisco Ramírez Beltrán, acknowledged that the opening of the Pan American athletics stadium for 24 and dated September 25 National Championship with an invitation was delayed by the delay in the works for the site located in Zapopan.

This week the decision was made after a trip they made to see the progress of works. He advised the IAAF to reschedule the date of approval of the track stadium, while maintaining the schedule for the route.

The International Athletics Federation (IAAF, for its acronym in English) was scheduled to come to town Sept. 18 to approve the stadium for track and field use, and the walking route marked on a street circuit in the main streets Guadalajara for the marathon and walking tests.

"The IAAF is, but only for the test route and the stage we prefer to wait for a new date until the stadium is finished," said the president of the Athletic Association of Jalisco, who reported to be the Organizing Committee Pan American Games in Guadalajara (Copag) that will give them the time to through the Mexican Federation of Athletics is conducting the official invitation.

The National Championship is not suspended, at least that's what I found Francisca Ramirez, "the National is not canceled, just postponed."

He questioned whether there will be time for testing.

"We need to wait until the stadium is ready. We were in the stadium and lack of details for a national event on the date we had planned. It will travel until the stadium is ready. The Pan American Village is open from October 4 to the athletes and you have an event here could serve as a rehearsal for the official competition and recognition of the track "

Copag president, Carlos Andrade Garin acknowledged that the Pan American Stadium in Athletics is the work to be slower compared to the rest, but hoped to be ready for the opening of the continental fair on 14 October, so there are no plans for an alternate venue.

Works for Rowing and Canoeing track continue

Track Rowing and Canoeing in Ciudad Guzman is another scenario that would be in hot spots by legal problems, however, the director of Copag, Carlos Andrade Garin, insisted that the final decision on their hands in their favor and that the boundary marked with a property that is part of the plaintiff is seven meters from the property Panamericana.

The construction workers continue to double and triple duty for what they consider to be one of the ending in the next few days and even longer in some areas you can try the Mexican boating, which will next week visit to Ciudad Guzman a concentration camp for 10 days.

That's a long way to go; and the Games are in October? Not unless they work straight 24 hours/day.

Yes it has fallen really behind and it puts the test event at the end of September in jeopardy. The organizers have promised it will be finished by then. The Athletics event will happen between the 23 and 30.

@Ikarus are those your pictures?

More names for the ceremonies have been confirmed. Famous mariachi singer Vicente Fernandez will perform the national anthem at the opening ceremony, as well for Mexico Lindo y Querido and Guadalajara.

Ricky Martin confirmed on his twitter account that he will be one of the guest stars at the closing ceremony (without knowing that it was still a secret  )

Guadalajara 2011 lights Pan American torch in Teotihuacan

02(3).jpg

Actually, Ikarus, the Pan Am flame has its own ancient roots in the New Fire Ceremony, of the Aztecs. People were afraid the sun wouldn't rise every 52 years, then they sacrificed someone at midnight and lit a fire inside the body of the victim were the heart used to be. Then they used that flame to light every temple and household in Tenochtitlán than took torches with it to light other cities in Mexico. It had a meaning of a new cycle of life and all, kinda like a big New Year's Eve (with some blood...) :)

Connecting this ancient flame to sports is a modern idea, inspired by the olympic flame.

BTW, The first Pan Am flame was lit in Mt. Olympus, Greece and then flown to Buenos Aires for the inaugural 1951 games.
