Actually, Ikarus, the Pan Am flame has its own ancient roots in the New Fire Ceremony, of the Aztecs. People were afraid the sun wouldn't rise every 52 years, then they sacrificed someone at midnight and lit a fire inside the body of the victim were the heart used to be. Then they used that flame to light every temple and household in Tenochtitlán than took torches with it to light other cities in Mexico. It had a meaning of a new cycle of life and all, kinda like a big New Year's Eve (with some blood...) :)

Connecting this ancient flame to sports is a modern idea, inspired by the olympic flame.

BTW, The first Pan Am flame was lit in Mt. Olympus, Greece and then flown to Buenos Aires for the inaugural 1951 games.

And in 1963 it was lit in Brazil.

Between 1955 until 1991 with exception of 1963 (although wikipedia says it was until 1987) the New Fire ceremony was held in Cerro de la Estrella (Star Hill). More info about that place here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cerro_de_la_Estrella

Also, some pics of the fire ceremony from yesterday.

For what team sport the PanAm Games are a qualifying tournament for London 2012?

Water Polo, Field Hockey and Handball. The winners of each respective gender and sport qualify for London. Use Wikipedia, I have extensively updated it.

My question is: when will the drug cartels and their 'reps' ;) carry the torch and therefore cause no distrubances to the Relay and the Games?

BTW, Ikarus is right in that the PanAm Lighting gets its inspiration from the Lighting at Olympia...NOT that ancient barbaric Aztec practice which of course PASO and the IOC would condone. Why should PASO/IOC use an ancient human sacrifice ritual as a way to light their flame which is to promote peace and brotherhood?

BTW, that torch is UUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHLLLLLLLLLLYYYYYYYYYY!

WRONG! The New Fire IS the ritual behind the PanAm flame, meaning new life, new cycles and all. And obviously, Baron, which one do you think would look more striking in an Opening Ceremony? Some numb priestess lighting a torch or a lavish apocalyptical aztec ritual in the midnight full of feathers and ancient masks and all that? B)

OK! I'll agree with you ONLY if they will have that human sacrifice 'ritual' which I've always wanted to see done in some Opening Ceremony. I imagine the CSI make-up team will be consultants for this sequence. ;)

It is a nice place. So I don't see why it should be the butt of jokes.

If you think that torch is ugly you haven't seen Rio 2007 one :P The Guadalajara one is just a bit of a copycat of the Singapore 2010 YOG one (since it's the same company that made it)

Anyway, new pics of the relay. The torch reached Puebla yesterday:

That Rio 2007 torch is OK; looks clunky but better than this Guadalajara 2011 one.

The Rio torch appears to be difficult to carry. Were people expected to run with it or just use two hands and walk?

EXACTLY! I was a torchbearer and of course those were beautiful and proud moments for everyone of us. But all the bearers I talked to were surprised by the weight (above 3kg!) and the balance of it, that made it a little hard to keep the torch steady during the run. Halfway through it, most people were changing arms or holding it with both hands and walking

Precious memories anyway.
