With the change to the Winter Olympic schedule in the nineties, the Winter Olympics will now be held in 2022 and 2026, meaning the 100th anniversary of the first games would be missed.

So should the IOC stage an additional Winter Olympics in 2024 to mark the occassion?

Perhaps rather than having 2018, 2022, 2024, 2026, 2030, the programme could be changed slightly over that period so the games are held in 2018, 2021, 2024, 2027, 2030 before returning to the four year cycle.

Well I am fine with 2022 and 2026...

They can always have a little ceremony in Chamonix in February 2024...

i agree.. i think they should keep the games for 2022 and 2026.. however, what COULD be cool is staging the games back in Chamnoix in 2024 with only the sports/events contested at the first winter olympics.  it wouldn't be considered an olympiad, but merely an olympic celebration of winter sport!

Can't change the schedule, although it would be nice to go back there in 2022-2026.

Tell me about Chamnoix!

Nobody ever mentions them being a possibility to hold another Olympics?

Could they?  Or are they too small to do it right now?

Chamonix could bid in a Lillehammer-like concept.

But now it seems that larger cities are preferred (Nagano, Salt Lake, Torino, Vancouver)

That's a good idea.

Not bad an idea. However, would it be a Winter Olympics equivalent of the 1906 Athens Games in some fashion?

I would've wanted to the IOC to bend the schedule to accomodate the centennial of the winter games and rotate to the current winter games schedule. meaning 2022, 2024 and 2026.

Hmmm..I'm all for another WOG anytime  :D  :P . Still, I wonder if they will goto Chamonix where they belong or some American city that comes along and buys them again...ahem..Atlanta, SLC!  ???

Or to Canada, who of course, will think that they are entitled to another WOG.

I don't know, but I don't think the IOC would want to have such an idea floating around. With the way the IOC works sometimes, it could happen.

I don't think you need a centennial to celebrate the Olympics.  Each Olympic Games is a celebration.  Leave the schedule as is and never mind with silly things like that.

Absolutely.  Why did they even bother to switch the schedule in 1994 -- and then switch it back again?  That would be pretty dumb.

PLUS, as they did with the Summer Centennial, the IOC actually held a Convocation at the Sorbonne in 1994 - marking the Olympic Congress which great-grandpappy PdeC called in 1894 at the same site.  So, they could do a little thing at Chamonix.  But that's 20 years from now -- so I can't worry.

Ironically, the Centennial of the Olympic Winter Games will actually be in 2026.  The so-called First Olympic Winter Games were held in Chamonix as an IOC sponsored international winter sport festival.  In 1926, the IOC decided they would fully endorse and sanction the Olympic Winter Games and retroactively named the festival in Chamonix the First Olympic Winter Games.

And, with about that time, the USA could host those Games.

Spot on Kendegra..it's a bit hard to celebrate a century of Winter Olympic Games in 2024 when the Chamonix games of 1924 were initially called a festival of winter sport, not an IOC sanctioned Olympics. Plus, the whole idea of shifting the WOGs to alternate years was to maximize sponsorship, coverage etc of those games, instead othem falling under the shadow of the Summer Olympics.

This is a bit of a left of field suggestion, by why not St Moritz in 2028? they were the first winter Olympics to be named accordingly, the 1948 games were also held there (hence the first Olympics of the post-war era) and the IOC's administrative base is now in Switzerland. I know...crazy idea but... :laughlong:
