baron-pierreIV Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Salt Lake City 2002 was since Nagano 1998, Lake Placid 1980 was after Sapporo 1972. Both Los Angeles 1984 and Atlanta 1996 were since Tokyo 1964.Neither Beijing or PyeongChang were in Japan last time I checked, but even then; the United States has hosted more Summer and Winter Games than the whole continent of Asia - a continent that comprises of over half the world's population. So who told them to give birth to all those kids? Well, 2008 will be in Beijing and 2014 will probably be in PyongChang. So there!!
Stu Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 The poll wasn't exacting a promise to vote for the US candidate. It was merely picking their brains to see how friendly or hostile they could be to a US bid. That's what I said. The findings of the poll are useless really as any other city in the world (with the exception of Beijing and London) would have received similar positive support for attempting a bid.

Thank for your wise words, o guru. Uhmmm... Baghdad? Beirut? Tijuana? Jakarta? Kolkatta? Karachi?
Stu Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Uhmmm... Baghdad? Beirut? Tijuana? Jakarta? Kolkatta? Karachi? I did think of some of those cities too but I couldn't bring myself to put them within the same brackets as London and Beijing!

Oh I quite agree.I meant to say in my earlier post that any bidding US city, even first-timers Chicago or San Francisco may also suffer similarly from a "not USA again" feeling. The time is ripe for a first-time city from a country that has never previously hosted,if such a city can manage to get its act together that is.IF one does, then I feel 2016 is shaping up to be their's to lose! At this present moment though,it seems a rather big "if"!

At this present moment though,it seems a rather big "if"! Nope. San Francisco's different. It is the 'most European' of American cities. So, if we/SF can get a few major venues within city limits, I think we will present a formidable bid that a New Delhi or Cape Town can't touch. Rio's out for 2016 because they will still be recovering from 2014 -- if they can get their act together. Mo Rush here says Cape Town won't exactly be ready for the 2009 vote -- so first-timers, you'll have to wait for 2020.
Stu Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 It is the 'most European' of American cities. Oh dear, 2016 is not Europe's turn!
baron-pierreIV Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Oh dear, 2016 is not Europe's turn! Precisely. It's a little bit of Europe, Asia and America in one North American city!!
ejaycat Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Silly question, guys, but does this mean that up to now, Japan is the only country that has officially designated a candidate city for the 2016 summer Games? Did Spain officially designate Madrid for 2016? I wasn't sure...

Among the others seriously interested are the US three, Rome, Delhi, Bangkok, Rio and Monterrey.

Nope; Rome has declared it is NOT pursuing a bid at this time. I have not heard from Bangkok and Delhi is getting opposition from home after the vast amounts they've spent getting their CWG turn started. I'd count Bangkok out, too. I mean their only medal chances are maybe - boxing, taekwando -- the secondary sports.
Mikel Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Did Spain officially designate Madrid for 2016? I wasn't sure... Yes, it's Madrid.
Sir Rols Posted August 30, 2006 Report Posted August 30, 2006 Well, we sure know where the Chinese and Korean IOC votes will go to. Not Japan. And we sure know who won't be voting for PyeongChang.

Who do you think is more likely to make it official, besides the US in march!?
ChicagoFan90 Posted August 31, 2006 Author Report Posted August 31, 2006 Who do you think is more likely to make it official, besides the US in march!? Turkey and Cuba for sure, with Mexico a possibility.
rastafario Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Turkey and Cuba for sure, with Mexico a possibility. I know Cuba has been bidding quite a few times latelly, but I wonder what current Castro's health situation will do for La Habana plan for a 2016 bid?
arwebb Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 It"s TokyoJOC chooses Tokyo Crisscross News Japan Tokyo picked as Japan's candidate to host 2016 Olympics Wednesday, August 30, 2006 at 17:17 EDT TOKYO — Tokyo was picked over Fukuoka on Wednesday as Japan's candidate to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. Tokyo won 33-22 in a vote by 55 selection committee members, including Japanese Olympic Committee officials and representatives from domestic sports federations, and will move on to the international competition. Tokyo had been considered the odds-on favorite due to its financial capability, international profile as Japan's capital and history of hosting a number of major international sports events. No major surprises there. It's becoming an interesting bid process.
Mikel Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 If Istanbul bids it would be interesting if they make the shortlist! We can have a scenario with Tokyo, Istanbul, Madrid, Hamburg and San Francisco. Who will win?

I think it's still too early for Istambul, Hamburg ....... honestly I cannot bet Madrid......... good chance San Francisco .......... new and different bid ........ why not ? I'm still waiting the last words from my Roma

I'm still waiting the last words from my Roma Hamburg - No. Germany should not be so stupid as to put a city other than Berlin again. Madrid - No. For the last 54 years, the IOC has not awarded the Summer Games back-to-back to the same continent. Why should it do so now? San Francisco (or CHicago) - hopefully I thought Roma and IOC (Italian Committee) already declared that Rome will not bid for 2016?

San Francisco (or CHicago) - hopefully I thought Roma and IOC (Italian Committee) already declared that Rome will not bid for 2016? The Italian Olympic Committee and the mayor of Rome did something a few weeks ago that confused people a bit, stating how if Rome wanted to continue they could, but no one else on the IOC (Italian Committee) though they should go ahead. So, in simplistic terms, Rome 2016 is dead, finished, never to see light again.
