Not that I want to get into another roof chat, but what are the chances of the roof popping during the ceremonies? The stadium has been around since 1983 and the roof has popped only once, in 2007. If we spent every second worrying about every unlikely scenario, we'd all have pretty crappy lives. What if an earthquake had hit LA? What if a fire burned through Sydney? What if an avalanche wiped out Albertville? Oh mercy, save us all! :o

Oh jesus that is beautiful.

I really don't understand how people can complain that Vanoc's green and blue look is no good. It fits this city so nicely, as evident in these pictures.

TODAY'S PICTURES: HSBC Celebration of Light Summer Fireworks Festival

For the past 18-years, Vancouver has had an annual four-day summer fireworks festival. It's one of a kind in the world, drawing 400,000 to 500,000 people to the beaches and parks around English Bay in Downtown for each of the four nights. It draws not only locals but tourists from all over the province, Alberta, Canada, and the United States - specifically Seattle. 35% of the attendance are out of town tourists. Also, more than a thousand boats are anchored in the bay to watch the shows each night.

However, this year the event faces possible cancellation due to a $400,000 shortage needed to fund this $4-million event. Sponsors are much less willing to foot out money in this economic climate. The naming right sponsor, the largest sponsor, is the HSBC Bank of Canada.

A donation drive was started today, and in the last 3 hours more than $5,000 have been donated towards the $400,000 needed to put on the event this summer. To donate and learn more about the fireworks, visit http://www.savethefireworks.ca

What are those high-rise buildings in the background? It reminds me of Bellevue, just east of Seattle.

Vancouver has one metropolitan area (downtown) and several smaller clusters called regional town centres.

The skyline you see in the distance is Downtown Burnaby, also known as Metrotown and the largest regional town centre. Metrotown is built around Canada's second largest shopping mall, called Metropolis at Metrotown.

Joyce district, and behind it Metrotown

^ yes, the Olympic Village is just above the wheel....where all the cranes are next to False Creek.

Today's shot: This is one of Vancouver's proudest institutions, the main public library branch in Downtown Vancouver: Library Square. Library Square occupies an entire city block. Approximately 15,000 people visit the library daily, making it one of the busiest libraries in the world.

* 9 stories

* 37,000 square metres (398,000 square feet)

* the 2.5 million books, periodicals, and other reference materials are moved through the building by vertical and horizontal conveyors

* 51 km of cable are laid throughout the building, including a fibre optic backbone

* seating capacity: 4200+

* 700+ parking stalls and many bicycle racks

* top 2 floors currently leased by the British Columbia government and scheduled for future library expansion

* approximate cost: CAD $107 million

High-rise

* currently occupied by the Canadian government, scheduled for future library extension

* approximate cost: CAD $50 million

* combined future expansion and existing capacity is 5-million books

^The first thing that pops into my mind whenever I see the library is: *chanting* "Maximus! Maximus! Maximus..." ;)

With regards to the aerial photo, are there any plans to put anything in the area north of Science World (the big grey area next to the grassy area)? I guess this area was formerly used for the Indy, and priorto that, Expo. How about the big empty green area next to the railway station? I remember there were plans to build some high-tech campus there but it seems nothing materialized from that.

It'll be an extension of Creekside Park, the park immediately north of Science World. The existing Creekside Park will be improved.

And of course, the BC Place precinct will be turned into condos, retail, entertainment, office, hotel, new home of the Vancouver Art Gallery and a major casino:

Today's picture: Vancouver City Hall's clock tower on the right, and the ski slopes of Grouse Mountain in the North Shore in the distance.

Sometimes, on clear nights, you can even see people skiing down the hills.
