Brazil 2014 FIFA World Cup Coverage

Recommended Posts

We can imagine as far as the intensity. In my little essay, I should have captured the tense moments going on with not just the traffic but with among the Brazilian players and media on the east side of Sao Paolo. I can imagine hearing inside playing the XX's aptly-titled Intro, which I'm actually playing right now as I write this on YouTube. Many of the Brazilian living soccer legends led by Pele will definitely be in attendance at the Arena Do Sao Paolo and words will granted with them at the stadium. You have to think Big Phil and his staff will guide his team not being intimadated by their presence and aura.

TeleLatino (TLN) has some World Cup 2014-related programming up in Canada in the lead up to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil with documentaries and specials:

http://tlntv.com/soccer/fifa-world-cup-2014/tv-specials

And here's TLN's 2014 World Cup Brazil broadcasting schedule with games in Italian and Spanish. Almost all the games are live with some of them broadcast in both languages like with Argentina vs. Bosnia-Herzegovina under an encore presentation format. Not sure why Portuguese got omitted this time from TLN. Strange since Toronto, Montreal, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Vancouver all have significant Portuguese communities. Last time, it showed both Brazil's and Portugal's games in Portuguese down in South Africa. In places like that combined with Brazil's massive popularity, some Portuguese should be used. If ESPN can offer it at least as a language track online, why can't TLN in Canada?

http://mediafiles.tlntv.com/Soccer-Tournaments/FifaWorldCup2014Brazil/Schedule/TLN-WorldCupSchedule2014-Final.pdf

Actually Portuguese is not part of the TLN TeleLatino roster as this press release announcing the 2014 World Cup coverage indicates. Just Spanish and Italian. Croatian 1998 star Zvonmir Boban is a part of this having played with AC Milan and will call some games in Italian, among the members of the broadcast team announced from the Mediasat Italia side:

http://tlntv.com/media-press-releases/GOOOOOOL-TLN-Telelatino-Network-Unveils-2014-FIFA-WORLD-CUP-Multilingual-Coverage

If you're up in Toronto and want to catch some World Cup action of all the games and of all the 32 nations (too bad Canada is not in it...) at the bars starting today, CBC News Toronto would like to help you

Oh yes, that time has indeed come for soccer fans worldwide. Not just in Brazil, the spiritual soccer home. Should be a national holiday down there. Can't wait! :)

Bein Sports France is now live and their main studio is...in Doha, Qatar! (since they're part of Al Jazeera, it allows them to set up a huge 900 sqm studio there)

I don't know when they're gonna use the Copacabana studio...

DamC, you might be aware of this: France Televisions, according to Wikipedia, will show the World Cup matches only to French Overseas Territories like French Polynesia, French Guyana, Martinique, St. Pierre and Miquelon, Reunion, Mayotte, New Caledonia, Wallis and Futina, Saint Martin, and Guadeloupe. And those areas will happen to issue its own domestic broadcasters for this. Will it allow both feeds from TF1 and BeIN Sports as far as those are concerned?

In the Republic of Georgia, Georgia Public Broadcaster 1TV gets to show the games at nighttime live starting tonight with Opening Ceremony and then Brazil vs. Croatia and the Brazil 2014 Postgame show starting at 21:00 (9pm Georgia time). The Brazil-Croatia game will be replayed in a 2-hour format tomorrow at 14:00 (2pm). Essentially all of the World Cup matches televised will come on the Georgian primetime TV hours and going into late at night or early morning with the game itself followed by the Brazil 2014 postgame show then another game and Brazil 2014. A select previous day's match will get the daytime replay. Before the World Cup, it had a preview show at 9pm called FIFA World Cup 2014 with two 30 minutes episodes back to back each profiling two teams. You can visit the GPB 1TV 2014 World Cup TV schedule here 9but all in Georgian):

Initially, there was a Ghana TV Consortium involved for the Ghanian broadcasting rights to the World Cup like we've seen with the Olympics with Japan and Canada. The GTVC was GTV, Metro TV, GTV Sports +, Net2, ETV, First Digital TV, and TV3 when the last one applied to join in February using the world feed. But a dispute happened when TV3 wished to air commercials during its broadcasts and subsequently pulled out of the consortium. It was even accused of ambush illegal marketing. TV3 is now back into the fold in mid-May for this with commercials ready to air them no more than 2.5 minutes and only on their network. This article discusses the terms of agreement all the network are to abide by after negotiations:

http://ghanasoccernet.com/ghana-world-cup-broadcast-right-holders-accuse-tv3-ambush-marketing/

But to protect SuperSport on the pay-TV side on DStv and GOTV, World Cup broadcasts in Ghana from Metro TV, GTV, and TV3 will be blocked to those subscribers:

DD National 1 will only carry 4 World Cup matches in India--Opening Ceremony, Brazil vs. Croatia, both semifinals, and the final--as Sony Six handles overall coverage:

South Korea's SBS 2014 World Cup website. SBS got one of South Korea's greatest soccer players in Cha Bum-Kun as a sportscaster for their coverage:

In this hilarious LTV7 promo for the 2014 World Cup, the LTV Sport World Cup soccer team humorously form a wall getting position to block the kick. Meanwhile former Latvian national star team player and analyst Maris Verpakovskis starts imagining Brazil by seeing the pretty Carnival dancers help forming the wall before he kicks...

Today's World Cup 2014 broadcasting on Mexcian FTA TV sees the Opening Ceremony televised live on TV Azteca 7 with the inaugural match Brazil vs. Croatia shown TV Azteca 13:

Today's definitely the day Brazilians are anticipating...save for making the final in Rio and winning, exorcizing the 1950 ghosts. Globo TV's promo for the live presentation of Opening Ceremony and Brazil vs. Croatia inaugural match. All in Sao Paolo. Going on right now as I write this!

I'm not sure how it works for them. TF1 and Bein are only available via satellite, cable or IPTV, that's why France Televisions is showing some games on their local networks there. I don't know if TF1 is blacked out or not when FTV is showing a game or not.

RTS Sport 2014 World Cup promo with those World Cup jersey-wearing guy all battling for control of the Brazuca throughout Geneva (interspersed with RTS Sports World Cup 2014 sportscasters in cameos with the ball)

RTE Two's promo for the upcoming England-Italy World Cup Group C match this Saturday

Under its Gol Caracol label, Caracol TV is showing its portion of the Colombian FTA 2014 World Cup TV coverage that it shares with RCN that started at 12:10 Bogota time. It's just showing games with apparently no pregame or postgame material starting in the afternoon for any of their games Caracol broadcasts; many of the programming in-between games is just typical regular non-sports programming. All the matches are also shown CaracolPlay online and for radio through BluRadio.com. In a related story, Caracol TV has the dramatization of the fabled Colombian national soccer team from the late 1980s-early 1990s in The Selecc10n. As for RCN Television, I think it only comes in for the final group game stage.

CyBC's RIK2 and RIK2 HD is the place to be (mostly) for the Greek Cypriot TV coverage of the 2014 World Cup. All the games have pregame and postgame coverage. During the final group game stage, the other matches not on RIK2 will appear on FLK1. There will be programming from the previous day before the World Cup programming called World Cup 2014 Screenshots. RIK2's 2014 World Cup TV schedule appears here:

http://translate.googleusercontent.com/translate_c?depth=1&hl=en&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dcybc%2Bcyprus%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D923&rurl=translate.google.com&sl=el&u=http://www.cybc.com.cy/pdf/sports/fifa2014.pdf&usg=ALkJrhjKez4hEVwZr8l80ER6VJWtrywlng

M1's and M2's overall TV plans for the Brazil 2014 World Cup 248 hours of coverage staring today at 20:10 (8pm Hungarian time): Mostly two matches per day followed by a 45-minute postgame show on M1. Final group games will be paralleled on M1 and M2 from June 23-27. Has its own World Cup 2014 webpage where all the games will be there too and apps for tablets and smartphones. Commentators are Gundel Takács Gábor, Mezei Dániel, Menczer Tamás , and Fülöp Gábor . Radio Kossouth will take care with its daily 10-minute news reports along with the morning sports show 180 minutes:

http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=hu&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.mtva.hu%2F

TV SLO 2 (aka Slovenija 2) is the 2014 World Cup Slovenian station where even with the Green Dragons not even getting to a home and home European qualification after making its debut in South Africa, it will still bring high-quality soccer that we come to expect in the World Cup. All the action happily comes like during Slovenia's primetime and even onto late night.

At last! SNT Paraguay (Canal 9 in Ascunsion) has massively upgraded its website and you can view the TV schedule of the first few days:

http://www.snt.com.py/fixture.php

Another new Latin American sports TV network spawned from a giant telecommunication company also got launched in January. It's Tigo Sports and catering to Paraguayans coming from the Millico Telecommunications. It signed an agreement with FIFA as the official mobile and Internet World Cup program distributor in Paraguay. Has a specific World Cup 2014 app for tablets and smartphones with all 64 games shown live and on-demand there with all the usual trimmings with news and videos, etc. plus a connection to HDTV through Tigo Star, if I got it right:

In-Progress and Post-Match Video Highlights from ESPN FC, Live Matches on WatchESPN featured in Google Search

ESPN announced today that in-progress and post-match highlights from ESPN FC and live matches on WatchESPN for the 2014 FIFA World Cup will be featured on Google for relevant game, team, and tournament searches. Searchers coming to Google looking for information on the World Cup are often looking for video replays of exciting moments of the tournament and where to watch matches live. With this new integration, searchers will be able to access links to ESPN FC for highlights right after they happen during the game across computers, smartphones and tablets. Additionally, links to live matches on WatchESPN will be featured in search queries with the intent to watch a live World Cup match. The agreement with ESPN marks the first fresh in-game video highlights integration for sports on Google Search.

“As befits the world’s biggest sporting event, ESPN and Google are teaming up for the first time to make ESPN FC video highlights available instantly to millions of fans and to make it easier to find live games on WatchESPN within Google Search,” said John Kosner, Executive Vice President, ESPN Digital and Print Media. “It is the latest example of how ESPN leads the marketplace with powerful digital solutions that delight fans and excite advertisers.”

“We are delighted to work with ESPN to bring fans video highlights during live matches through Google Search,” said Anjali Joshi, Vice President, Product Management. “People come to Google for answers and information, and giving them direct access to the biggest moments throughout the World Cup tournament is a great user experience.”

During the tournament, search results from World Cup-related queries will feature a fresh detailed timeline of match stats during the game – including goals, penalties, red cards and more – within Google Search. Within the timeline, the biggest moments will feature companion video that users can view on ESPNFC.com shortly after they happen. Additionally, live matches on WatchESPN.com and the WatchESPN app will be featured within searches specific to watching live World Cup matches. Videos will be available to users of Google.com or the Google Search app located in the United States.

More GREAT News

America is ready to catch World Cup fever early in 2014.

ESPN’s opening broadcast of the Brazil-hosted tournament, between the host nation and Croatia, drew a 3.2 overnight rating. That’s up 52% from the South Africa-Mexico opener in 2010 (which drew a 2.1 overnight rating). ESPN has only been keeping overnight figures since 1998, but that marks the best overnight rating ever for the opening match on ESPN.

The match, which was marred by controversy, drew higher ratings than either of NBCSN’s telecasts of the Stanley Cup Final.

The game also nearly topped 10 million total viewers. Univision’s Spanish-language telecast drew 5.1 million, while ESPN hit with a cool 4.4 million. For the non-math majors, that equals a cool 9.9 million viewers for the opening match.

Locally, you always wonder what markets are big for international soccer. The top 10 for ESPN were Washington (5.1), Boston (5.0), Miami (4.7), Los Angeles (4.6), New York (4.5), San Francisco (4.3), Hartford (4.3), Providence (3.9), Austin (3.9) and Orlando (3.8). A lot of very large cities with soccer cultures and big immigrant populations.

A big rating for the opening match is a good sign for the rest of the tournament, which is mostly airing when Americans on the east coast can watch. A 4 p.m. ET Thursday match getting a large audience is certainly a good sign. Welcome to another month of World Cup fever.

The Danish are getting into the Brazilian World Cup spirit and celebrations with everything Brazil has to offer like the samba dancers, the Brazuca balls, and the Confederation Cup giant screen watching all right at the beach, including the TV2 soccer sportscasters, with this TV2 Denmark Brazil 2014 World Cup promo done by Reksten Films:

Kazak soccer fans will get to see 33 Brazil 2014 World Cup matches on state channel Kazakhstan TV, 32 combined on KAZsport and Perviy Kanal Eurasia. Opening Ceremony and the Brazil-Croatia opener can both be seen on Kazakhstan TV and KAZsport. Closing Ceremony and the Final will both be on Kazakhstan TV and Eurasia:

KAZsport TV promoting not just the 2014 World Cup and all the action, electricity, and passion. But also, naturally, hosts Brazil itself:

NBC--not the one we're most familiar with but the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation in Southern Africa--announced it will show all 64 Brazil 2014 World Cup matches live, mostly on NBC1 with the simultaneous ones over apparently at NBC3. But that news prompted pay-TV service MultiChoice Namibia to pull the plug upon the channels by not offering the channels on its service so as to protect the SuperSport channels, something it has done across the African continent (see Ghana). That lasted less than 24 hours and now the restrictions upon NBC1 are lifted. NBC's coverage comes with a 15-30 minute pregame studio presentation show for each live game. 2-hour replays from the previous day come on NBC3: NBC Radio is also involved
