Probably the best news in recent Olympic history. Given the issues with India's NOC, and as other have mentioned, questionable outcomes of Hamburg, Berlin, and NRW's referendums, I wouldn't be surprised if Munich ends up with the 2036 games, or some sort of double awarding like they did with Paris and LA. I suppose I am biased and partial to Munich. Visited about a decade ago and it has remained one of my favorite cities in Europe next to Prague, and its Olympic Park impressed me. Having visited several more Olympic cities since, I would go so far as to say Munich's is the best maintained and utilized (next to Melbourne) of the 20th C. hosts.

Hey folks, long time, little chat. I hope you're all well. Currently working on a grad school project on the 2024 bid race. I'm trying to collect as much information as I can regarding the various bid files cities submitted. Thanks to my activity on this board during that race, I've got the following files: Boston 2024 (Withdrawn): All bid documents Los Angeles 2024: All bid documents Paris 2024: All bid documents Rome 2024: Stage 1 candidate file (the only one created) Budapest 2024: Stage 1 candidate file Stage 2 candidate file I am struggling to find the following files though: Hamburg 2024: Any domestic bid documents Budapest 2024: Stage 3 candidate file (submitted to the IOC on deadline, but the bid was withdrawn a month later) I am hoping one of you lovely members here may have one of these missing documents lurking in a dark deep abyss on your computers or favored cloud service. I cannot find them in my own, or anywhere online. I'm going crazy because I feel 100% certain I had them at some point.

Should the Olympic Games be Extended?
mr.bernham replied to Sir Rols's topic in General Olympics Discussion
I voted yes. I think a third week would make the most sense, but only if the whole regional/multiple cities approach is increasingly used. This may be a hot take, but I'd be in favor of reducing the schedule and merging the Olympics and Paralympics into a single month-long event. I do think serious discussions need to be had about the size of the event itself. Boosters keep saying that adding all these events will bring in new spectators, but I want to see some hard data post-Brisbane for the events added since Paris. -

Exactly. I think Paris did a good job of merging the model created by LA1984 and Barca92 -
Les jeux sont faits: Your Paris 2024 verdict
mr.bernham replied to Olympian2004's topic in Paris 2024 Summer Games
Jimmy Fallon really has a special way of destroying memes. She was becoming an ICON for us Zoomers. On a lighter note, I think it's really a testament to how incredible Paris' games were that they brought so many members back to this forum and seems to have left us all with really tender memories and emotions. I wanted to sit with my feelings for a few days, and the interaction between Lee and Michelle really cemented this impression. My verdict: A+, easily the best games since London 2012, and arguably one of the best games of the modern era going back to LA84. Sure, the ceremonies could've been better and the irony of the food not being good is *rich* (given Chirac's comments back in 2005!), but these complaints all pale in comparison to the sheer triumph and majesty of these games. In these two weeks Paris has given much-needed life and vibrance to the Olympic movement and I frankly cannot remember the last time I was more excited and optimistic about the future of these games. -

Congrats, you just described the venue plan construction model developed by Barcelona 1992. -

I'd add DC to that list, but again, never gonna happen. London could do it too. -

You should do it! I was thinking about volunteering as well. Would be fun to do it with a fellow Gamesbidder! -
LA2028 Venues and Stadiums

I'm optimistic, I'm just wary of how that 50-yard line grandstand will look. I hope they can get the right backdrop for it so it's not just a bunch of empty decks behind it. -
I don't see the stars aligning for an Orlando or Florida games, but who knows, I probably would've balked at the prospect of ATLANTA hosting the Centennial games. Then again, Atlanta may be all the more reason why Florida likely wouldn't get the games. I think if the US hosts again within my lifetime it'll be closer to the 2044-2056 time frame and be in either Los Angeles, Chicago, or New York. I'd throw DC into that mix, but the politics and overlapping governing authorities would make it very difficult, and after the debacle of Boston 2024 I don't see the odds being high for a medium-sized but iconic US city like Philadelphia or San Francisco getting the nod. Winter-wise I still think Denver, Seattle, or even NYC (only possible thanks to the new hosting rules) have the best chances post-SLC34.

LA 2028 Ceremonies
mr.bernham replied to baron-pierreIV's topic in Los Angeles 2028 Ceremonies Discussions
Based off of the content produced by the LA28 so far, I get a sense that the ceremony will be more about the diversity, creativity, and vibrance of life in Los Angeles rather than a jingoistic celebration of "America". LA84 did that, Atlanta'96 focused more on showcasing the South, and Salt Lake City in 2002 focused a lot on America's pioneer spirit. I think LA28 will go for a more "America's Playground" vibe. I expect it to be bright, bold, and fun. -
100% to all of this. Los Angeles still has volunteers AND organizers left around from 1984 and plenty of people still kicking after Atlanta. Not to mention, Los Angeles' infrastructure and public transit is: More extensive than it was in 1984. More extensive than Atlanta's is now (let alone in 1996). As Baron alluded to, ACOG hired a bunch of bus drivers who had no familiarity with Atlanta at all and they did a very poor job of training. Even then, the issues were resolved within the first four days. I don't foresee Los Angeles having this issue. I think a lot of folks like to portray traffic and transportation as a huge hurdle for American cities to overcome because we have a lot of highways, but transit wasn't an issue for LA in '84 or an issue for SLC in 2002. Likely won't be an issue in 2028.

LA2028 Venues and Stadiums
mr.bernham replied to AustralianFan's topic in Los Angeles 2028 Summer Games
Really interested to see how we pull this off. It's either going to be one of the coolest aquatics venue in Olympic history or an unfortunate backdrop that was better on paper than execution. -
Seb Coe as PM would've been unbelievably incredible. I'm glad he didn't end up in No.10 though. It would've forced him to be more partisan and politically combative. I feel like he's carved out an incredible position from which he can have a positive influence on the Olympic movement, which of course is bigger than any one nation.

Biggest chokepoint I'm concerned with right now is Dodgers Stadium. I think LA can manage it (we did just fine in 1984 and that was pre-metro and pre-telework), organizers, the city, and Metro officials just need to be honest with how preparations are going. Frankly, that may prove our downfall. Cali politicians are some of the least honest and most political people imaginable, like Alistair Campbell on steroids. They spin more than the athletes who do Breaking.

After Paris 2024: What’s next for the Olympic Games?
mr.bernham replied to GBModerator's topic in GB Newswire
I think we need to discuss how WDSF only started governing Breaking because they kept begging the IOC for ballroom and the IOC said "no" but was open to Breaking. WDSF changed tact, got Breaking approved, and then had to figure out how to govern an event they'd never taken seriously before. That's how we ended up with that joke Australian women who basically made a mockery of Breaking and Australia. -

mr.bernham replied to Olympian2004's topic in Paris 2024 Summer Games
Would've been made even spicier by me moving to LA too My first bid race on here was back in 2013, but the first I watched on here from genesis to execution was the 2024 race. What a wild time. Surreal to think that nine years ago I was sitting on a balcony in Paris scrolling through this forum and our speculations on how a Paris games would look, and now I'm watching replays of those games because I miss Paris already. -
Fair points all around. Definitely agree the "last mile" issue will be a complicating factor for us. I highly recommend this YT channel for LA Metro/Infrastructure updates: https://www.youtube.com/@nandert. He's super solid and uploads regularly, he's also very critical of Metro when it's necessary (which I appreciate). Here's a map of what the LA Metro system will look like come January 2030, so most of this will be finished by Games time: As an aside, I'm excited to finally live in a host city and be able to provide my insights. Only hope I can match the quality of your's during Paris' spectacular games.

I felt the earthquake a little at home, but not much. America is so excited the games are coming home that we're literally shaking. LA's metro has been working on metro improvements since we were awarded the games back in 2017, so a lot of projects are well along by now and should be ready for the games (though sadly not all of them). I think it's important to keep in mind that by 2028, LA will have had more time to prepare for the games than any city in the movement's history.

Les jeux sont faits: Your Paris 2024 verdict
mr.bernham replied to Olympian2004's topic in Paris 2024 Summer Games
This 1000Xs. Ran out of likes, other wise I'd like this. Thank you friend. I do planning consulting for stuff like this now (so insane that Gamesbids ended up defining my life trajectory and career... spirit of the games I guess!) and yeah, LA and Paris are like dream scenarios now. Thanks to how London hosted in 2012, Tokyo in 2021, and Munich in 1972 all three cities could easily join those ranks. Will have my verdict in later tonight. Busy day in the office today. -
Youth summer games 2030?
mr.bernham replied to Hansfromdenmark's topic in Bids for the Youth Olympic Games
Not sure if this is of any interest to folks here, but back in February I was asked by a US lobbying group to put together a feasibility study for an American city that's interested in bidding for 2034/2038. NDA means I can't disclose which city, but I can give a rough timeline. They're planning to send the USOC a letter expressing interest the 1st quarter of next year and if that's well received, going public to the IOC in the 3rd or 4th quarter. -
I really hope it's Coe. London 2012 changed the game. Had London been followed by a more responsible host than Rio, I think we'd give London even more credit than we do now (which is still a good bit). Coe also has experience from all levels: athlete, politician, organizer, sports federation leader. I think he could speak to every single level of the Olympic family with candor, authority, and trust... something Mr. Olympic Champion 1976 never could do convincingly.
