  1. new IOC rules create insurmountable legal obstacles for everyone except single, bach-approved candidate.
  2. i really hope they do not do that either because it's equally cringe. just create some dumb little park like atlanta.
  3. well now i need a coupon.
  4. i feel bad that you need to know this much about our insane politics to live in the modern world. it's too early to know what will happen in pennsylvania but i feel she will carry wisconsin and georgia based on the vibes of her grassroots momentum, a similar version of which was very useful to obama.
  5. bach is an unctuous little social climbing suck up when it comes to royalty. (his tactless imposition on the norwegian royal family did him no favors for getting oslo to host). so i'm not surprised he had a red line in the sand at an event the kings of the netherlands and spain (a bourbon no less) were attending. i never got the sense he was born into the upper reaches of the social strata — correct me if i'm wrong — so IMO this is all his own pathetic insecure inferiority complex at play. (in this light, entertaining qatar's far-fetched bid makes more sense.) i believe the british upper classes would disdainfully refer to him as a "striver," and i'm sure charles can smell it a mile off.
  6. like what? never seen anything good on there myself.
  7. why does the discount have to be at temu though like who is itching to buy more temu?
  8. i love the french. they work like an hour a day tops and their managers weep over their tireless work ethic as they plan their 9 week vacations and take retirement at 43.
  9. luckily the IOC understands that NOBODY on earth wants a poland olympics, and their geopolitical star isn't on the rise as in qatar and india so it lacks that sense of inevitability. there are 50 european cities that could jump the line in front of it, and every person in this thread is secretly relieved by that fact. i predict they'd be a total disaster from top to bottom.
  10. nah i don't buy that. moral-environmental distrust in poland over fake snow? i think perhaps you're overthinking things and inventing problems that don't exist. https://time.com/6146039/artificial-snow-2022-olympics-beijing/
  11. they just make the snow now - didn't you see beijing?
  12. i really think they should aim more realistically at a WOG but they're all tied up for the moment and 'tis the season for summer olympics fever i suppose.
  13. KC would be a disaster. i think it's telling we don't know much about the other women in contention beyond their resumes. no apparent scandals for hoevertsz indicates that she just hasn't been vetted properly by the press yet. because i think we all know they're out there.
  14. how about a bach protogee gold medalist who speaks fluent corruption and was once named zimbabwe's worst cabinet minister? last we heard she was scooping up leftover mugabe fiefdoms after getting in good with the new gov't. they're probably building her a palace in doha as we speak just in case.
  15. i also think thomas jolly may have overestimated the viewing audience's patience for watching stationary athletes stand on boats in the pouring rain watching the audience watch them. at least during a typical athletes parade they're moving, walking, waving, dancing, having fun, looking like athletes. really, the cameras should have been ON THE BOATS, in the athletes' faces and moving around in an intimate, cinema verite kind of way, cut with the riverbank stationary cam. NBC did a little of this for team USA and it was revelatory. tremendously boring and juiceless the way they actually did it, like so much of the overall direction.
  16. completely right and a missed opportunity then. this is a lot worse than i would have thought.
  17. as china and the US escalate this cold war redux on the medal table, i imagine every country is going to have to work harder or accept the losses.
  18. we could have been No. 1 with an extra gold had shelby mcewen shared the high jump gold, instead of going for broke and taking silver, but whatever. in the case of ties, you move on to total silvers anyway so i guess we "win" on that technically. on one hand, winning the medal table feels pointless and even juvenile, but on the other there was that chinese doping scandal with the swimmers so it's nice to deny them the top spot in a hollow, petty sort of way.
  19. he'll take what i give him and like it.
  20. sorry, not taking questions on this one.
  21. they said on the feed that they have 9 total, and 4 are from high jumper mutaz barsham who just won a bronze today. wikipedia says he actually grew up in doha and is from a sudenese family big into athletics.
  22. i think you should count decathlon as 10 medals and breaking not at all.
  23. this is TODAY by the way and not 12 more years into climate warming. there's a not insignificant chance it would still be a heat wave year. give it to istanbul, the only city that can blunt qatar's absurd ambitions and take the middle east off the table for another 20 years. they can't do any worse than rio.
