  2. They found sport politics; the president of COMNEBOL is Paraguayan for example, which factored in they getting a single WC2030 match. Similarly, Assuncion just hosted the Junior PanAms, which was also a factor for them to get the adult 2031 edition.
  3. May your prayers be answered...
  4. Dynamic pricing is yet another great technological contribution to the ensh!tification of the modern world. A great strategy to lock plebs out of live entertainment. Let’s just cross fingers the IOC don’t adopt it.
  5. The weird thing is, both PC and Beijing were in my time zone, and I watched most of them avidly live. Yet I don’t recall much of either, nothing really etched itself in my mind (beyond Chinese cooling towers). Whereas I still have strong memories of much of Sochi. I can’t say I’ve got much hype for Milan… yet. I’m sure it will come.Hope the board comes alive in the lead-up and during the games - and help the logo comp!
  6. Paraguay seems to be becoming the Saudi* of the Americas, they're hoovering up sporting events! Talking about the US, I'm very surprised they don't care about these. I'd have thought there's dozens of US cities that could easily host, but wouldn't get an Olympics. Plus if they put a full team in, they'd surely be at or near top of the table, which America always likes. Why don't they care, especially since this goes back before Trump? *Presumably they've found loads of money - is it oil or something else?
  7. Yeah it was really a nothing. PC was a good games by all accounts, & it seemed good from what I could watch (& obviously it's good and right that it moves around the world) but speaking selfishly from GMT, it's good to have it back in a good timezone for watching. That feels much more important for the Winter games because they can't just move events around the day or have as much in the local night as in Summer. They have to go with winter daylight whenever that is. Looking forward to being able to see stuff like snowboard cross actually live at a time that isn't 3am, first time since Sochi
  8. Brazil is the main market for TV rights to the Games, especially given the US's lack of interest. Choosing Rio would offer a chance to bring back TV Globo, by far the largest media outlet in Brazil and capable of guaranteeing coverage for the event. The IOC awarded London 2012 to RecordTV, but soon regretted the decision, faced with an event with significantly less coverage. They corrected their mistake and have since guaranteed TV Globo coverage for all Olympics. PanAm Sports made a poor choice. Since signing a contract with RecordTV for the 2011-2019 cycle, the event has lost significant coverage, and they were ultimately left off TV in 2023. As far as we know, they remain without a partner for 2027. The 2031 Games in Rio could have meant a good financial deal with TV Globo for 2027 and 2031.

  12. Brisbane The Sporting Capital of Australia A weekend with nothing for Brisbane to win? Maybe hearts and minds. Fresh off being named Australia’s Sporting Capital in the annual Burson Rankings of Sports Cities (and 200th in the world), Brisbane’s momentum feels unstoppable. That title might have seemed like a stretch, but after the weekend’s wins, it’s easy to believe. The Brisbane Lions took the Queensland spirit south and brought home a cup. The Brisbane Broncos used a packed Suncorp crowd to book their spot in the grand final at the death. There are 200 larger cities in the world but few with Brisbane’s drive. By 2032, Brisbane will become one of the smallest and youngest cities ever to host a Summer Olympic Games. The US will be the only country to have held more. Brisbane will overtake great cities that never have: New York, Chicago, Madrid, Singapore, Delhi. None in Africa. None in South East Asia. None in the Middle East. The Games will transform Brisbane forever. But imagine the year after, September 2033. A World Swimming Championship at the new National Aquatic Centre, the Lions playing finals at the new Brisbane Stadium, the Broncos chasing another title at Suncorp, and maybe a Powderfinger reunion at the new Brisbane Arena. All connected by iconic walking bridges back to the City and South Bank. This week, the State also released the opportunity for a new 17,000-seat indoor Arena as part of the Gabba Entertainment Precinct, just 2km from the CBD compared to 25km for Boondall’s Brisbane Entertainment Centre. The plans even include new housing opportunities once the Gabba is decommissioned, complementing the proposed Victoria Park precinct as two major public destinations supported by Cross River Rail. Together, they define a city in motion, divided and connected by the Brisbane River, winding from the Bunya Mountains of the Wakka Wakka, Jarowair and Barrumgum peoples to Moreton Bay on Quandamooka Country. The following image from Cox Architecture captures the river’s true “chocolaty” nature, and that unmistakable afternoon glow that reminds us Brisbane’s best is still to come. We’re happy to help where we can”
