I'm more worried about the Barra/Jacarepaguá site, which apparently belongs to a businessman, and were illegally slanted for city building. The frick? And despite the guy being apparently a nutter (who plans on building in the spot the "esoteric city"), he seems to have the right of it. He's won a similar lawsuit against the city already. Hey, the move of F1 to Sào Paulo was the fairest thing they done cause São Paulo was the first place that hosted an F1 race in Brasil and F1 is the biggest tourism event of the city, Its very important that Sào Paulo stays with it, besides, Rio has MOTO GP. Porém, no Brasil, a realização do Pan-2007 começou a aproximar a CBF e o Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro (COB) para fazer do evento carioca um sucesso. Há uma série de detalhes que precisam ser discutidos, estudados, mas creio que a boa vontade e o desejo do futebol de colaborar com o sucesso do Pan na América do Sul já estão claros. Teixeira considera que o fato de o evento estar marcado para o período de 13 a 29 de julho iria facilitar a liberação dos jogadores de até 23 anos - idade limite para a participação nos torneios pré-olímpicos da Fifa. Se for realizado em janeiro de 2008, como normalmente acontece de quatro em quatro anos, o Pré-Olímpico criaria conflito maior, principalmente com os clubes europeus. The Pan American Games of 2007 are organized by the Rio 2007 Pan American Games Organizing Committee (CO-RIO) in partnership with the Brazilian Paralympic Committee, according to the rules and regulations of the International Paralympic Committee - America (IPC America). "These Parapanamerican Games are another legacy of RIO 2007 to the city of Rio de Janeiro, and we are certain that we're going to have a wonderful event," commented César Maia, Mayor of Rio de Janeiro. "The Parapanamerican Games in Rio together with the Pan American Games confirm the stability of the marriage between the Olympic and Paralympic movements," said Carlos Arthur Nuzman, President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee. The staging of the Parapanamerican Games in Rio in 2007 was applauded by the Executive Director of the International Paralympic Committee, the Spanish Xavier Gonzalez, and by the President of the International Paralympic Committee - America (IPC America), Argentinean Jose Luis Campo. "America is taking over the leadership of the Paralympic movement and we hope that other continents will follow this example with regard to their continental competitions," commented Gonzalez. The Parapanamerican Games will be held from August 12 to 19, 2007 in the same venues as the Pan American Games, which will take place shortly before, between July 13 and 29. This will guarantee the quality of the sports equipment and will allow the delegations to be housed at the Pan American Village being erected at Barra da Tijuca. Housing at the Village offers savings as well as more comfort - the Village was originally planned to be used by athletes during a multisports event, and several of its apartments have been adapted for use during the Parapanamerican Games. "An important segment of Brazilian society, the physically challenged, feels esteemed and respected by the authorities and the sports community in our country. And this assures us that the event will be a success," said Vital Severino Neto, President of the Brazilian Paralympic Committee. The Pan American Games of 2007 will have the participation of around 1,300 athletes and 700 members of delegations from 31 countries in 12 sports. This is the third edition of the event: the first two took place in Mexico City in 1999 and Mar del Plata, Argentina in 2003, but were not associated with the Pan American Games. Since Seoul '88 it has been a rule to hold the Olympic Games together with the Paralympics. In Athens 2004, the Olympic Games will take place from August 13 to 29 and the Paralympic Games from September 17 to 28. The implementation of the project is not going to interfere in the continuity of the competitions of driving and motor racing sports in the spedway, that has got approximately 1 million meters square. SPEEDWAY SPORTS COMPLEX 7/26/2004 Organizers of the Pan American Games - Rio 2007 made important progress last Friday, July 23, when Cesar Maia, Mayor of the City of Rio de Janeiro, signed the Invitation for the tendering of the construction of the Rio Olympic Park in the Speedway Sports Complex at the Nelson Piquet Speedway facilities. Three installations for RIO 2007 will be constructed at the Speedway Sports Complex: the Rio Olympic Arena, the Rio de Janeiro Aquatic Center and the Barra Velodrome. At the Pan American Games, which will take place from July 13-29, 2007, the Olympic Arena will host competitions in Basketball (mens and womens) and Artistic Gymnastics. Diving, Swimming and Synchronized Swimming competitions will take place at the Rio de Janeiro Aquatic Center and the Barra Velodrome will hold a Cycling track event. At the Parapanamerican Games, which are scheduled to take place immediately afterwards (from August 12-19), Swimming is planned for the Rio Aquatic Center and Wheelchair Basketball for the Rio Olympic arena. The Rio Olympic arena will also host World Championship Basketball (womens), which will take place in 2006. It is expected that the tendering process will be concluded within 60 days with the signing of the contracts. The tendering includes the system of granting usage through an international competition. If there are no petitioning companies, the local City Hall will assume responsibility for the construction, which must begin before the first trimester of 2005. Estimated construction costs run higher than R$250 million. The Brazilian or foreign company that wins the bid will be granted usage for 50 years and must construct the sports complex according to the requirements of the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and the International Federations of the categories which will make use of the installations. The invitation also includes the obligation of the company or group that wins the tender to guarantee the presentation of any motorcycle and car racing events contracted by City Hall. Construction will be scheduled to accommodate the car and motorcycle events - the idea being that work that might interfere with the use of the Speedway be done after the track events. The new sports complex will re-qualify the Nelson Piquet Speedway and will be one of the installations closest to the Pan American Village, which is currently being erected in the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood. Rominger Posted July 27, 2004 Report Share Posted July 27, 2004 Just another one from the official website RIO 2007 IMPORTS EQUIPMENT 7/12/2004 Sports Minister Agnelo Queiroz and Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) President Carlos Arthur Nuzman signed an agreement on Friday, July 9 in Brasilia in the amount of R$ 7,289,395.21 (almost US$ 2.4 million), to be designated for the importation of sporting materials and equipment for use in facilities of the Pan American Games - Rio 2007 and for the preparation and training of teams from Brazil for the event. "This is yet another step we have taken in the construction of Rio 2007," commented Nuzman, who is also President of the Pan American Games - Rio 2007 Organizing Committee (CO-RIO). National Secretary of High Performance Sports André Arantes, and Secretary-General of CO-RIO, Carlos Roberto Osório, also participated in the signing of the agreement, which took place at the Planalto Palace during a visit paid by some of the members of the Brazilian delegation that will compete in the Athens Olympic Games to the President of the Republic, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The goal of the Sports Minister and COB is to receive the imports in advance, within three years, so that the Brazilian teams will have more time to prepare for Rio 2007 with equipment that will actually be utilized at the event. "This agreement reaffirms the commitment of the Federal Government to the Pan American Games and will help to develop sports in Brazil," affirmed Minister Agnelo Queiroz. Twelve sports are being considered for funds in the agreement: Athletics, Badminton, Canoeing, Fencing, Gymnastics, Handball, Judo, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Rowing, Taekwondo and Table Tennis. Studies are also being performed for future application to other types of sports. All equipment and materials to be imported have been approved by National Federations and are the same as those customarily used in World Championships and Olympic games. In order to encourage the growth of Brazilian sport and to take advantage of the interest caused by RIO 2007, the Brazilian Olympic Committee (Comitê Olímpico Brasileiro - COB) and the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2007 Pan-American Games (CO-RIO) signed an agreement this Monday, August 2, with the Globo media companies. "The idea is to mobilize Brazilian society immediately, making the 2007 Pan-American Games an important platform to transform sport and make it an effective instrument of social development, spreading its values and ideals throughout Brazil," says Carlos Arthur Nuzman, president of COB and CO-RIO. "The effect of an event of this magnitude is not just reflected in the benefits it will bring to the host city, but also in its contribution to Brazil as a whole. The role of Globo Organizations in this agreement is to help all the organizations involved in holding the Games and to mobilize Brazilian society in support of this project. They can be assured that our efforts to do this will be effective," states João Roberto Marinho, Vice-President of the Globo Organizations. "The vast experience of the Globo media companies in the production, transmission and coverage of large-scale events and their commitment to the development of social actions and to Brazilian culture make them reliable partners in this mission," emphasized Carlos Roberto Osório, general-secretary of CO-RIO. Essential to the mobilization of Brazilian society are the Pan-American Events (Ações Pan-americanas - APAs) created as part of the agreement. This involves a calendar of events held by COB, CO-RIO, or by Globo media companies which will begin this year and continue until the holding of the Games in July 2007. There will be high earning sporting events - many of which will be preparatory events for RIO 2007 -, a student sports program, as well as sports, social and cultural events open to society as a whole. "We want to bring RIO 2007 into people's daily lives as of now, holding events and projects which will allow the public to interact with their idols and to experience what it is like to practice sport," explains the president of COB and CO-RIO, emphasizing that after the signing of the agreement, the APA calendar will start to be drafted. The Federal Government (through the Ministry of Sports), the State Government of Rio de Janeiro and the Mayor's Office of Rio de Janeiro, all of which are part of the Executive Committee of CO-RIO, also signed this Monday a protocol of intentions, explicitly supporting the singing of the Agreement. Under the agreement, the Globo media companies are committed to giving widespread coverage to all APA events, guaranteeing widespread visibility for RIO 2007 in the different media platforms. "We believe that the Pan-American Games are a great opportunity to encourage the practice of sports in Brazil, thereby generating economic and social development and strengthening education," emphasized Érico Magalhães, director of TV Globo, summing up the beliefs of all the Globo media companies that signed the agreement (TV Globo, Infoglobo, Globosat, Radio Globo and Globo Publishing). COB, CO-RIO and the Globo media companies will separately prepare their commercial plans for the sale of their respective rights. In addition, at the request of CO-RIO, a common strategy will be prepared for the future launch of the commercial plans into the market, maximizing the business value of RIO 2007. "We are meeting a demand from the market itself to ensure a high visibility return for whoever buys sponsorship," commented the Marketing Director of COB and CO-RIO, Leonardo Gryner. Transmission Rights The RIO 2007 transmission rights are being offered by CO-RIO without exclusivity to Brazilian radio and TV (open and subscription) networks. The first contracts were signed on Monday with TV Globo (R$7.5 million), Globosat (R$1.8 million) and Radio Globo (R$150,000) for the transmission of the event in Brazil. This amounts to a 200% increase over the figure paid by these companies for the 2003 Santo Domingo Pan-American Games. Whoever acquires the television rights from CO-RIO will receive a minimum of 700 hours of live transmission from the Games. Daily coverage will involve a minimum of ten events, of which at least five will be transmitted live, and two bulletins of around 40 minutes each. The signal (official images) will be the responsibility of the host broadcaster (the official producer), which will be contracted by CO-RIO through an international bidding process. For some time Rio had the CART (Indy) race. It's a pity that they couldn't keep it. Some national leagues could bring a stage to Rio: Renault Formula, Stock Car, Clio Cup, Formula Truck, South American F-3... "The Pan American Games are of interest to Brazil. Their efficient organization is fundamental to the future Olympic nomination of other Brazilian cities," asserted President Lula during a presentation on the multi-sports event given by the Secretary-General of the Organizing Committee of the Pan American Games Rio 2007 (CO-RIO), Carlos Roberto Osório. During the presentation, President Lula showed interest in learning details about RIO 2007. He asked where the competitions would be held, how many athletes would be involved and about the program for the Games, among other topics. Afterwards, when he climbed up to the upper platform to get a panoramic view of the Pan American Village site, he wanted to know details about the enterprise such as its exact location in relation to Barra da Tijuca beach and the position of the morning sun. "You can count on our support for whatever is needed for the Pan American games," declared President Lula as he left the Pan American Village site and said goodbye to André Richer, current President of the Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB). Minister of Sports Agnelo Queiroz, who also visited the construction of the Pan American Village, said that the presence of President Lula was a great reassurance for the development of the organization and preparation for the Pan American Games. "The president left with a very good impression. He liked everything he saw, and found everything very well organized," stated Queiroz. He then added that he hopes that the financial contract for the construction, assessed at around US$ 80 million, will be signed sometime this month by Caixa Econômica Federal and Agenco, the company responsible for the undertaking. The director of Agenco, Sérgio Goldberg, reported that he hopes to begin work on the foundation soon - the construction of the Village is still in the stage where you have to move, fill in and level the earth. The Pan American Village project fulfils all the requirements of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the Pan American Sporting Organization (PASO). The Pan American Village is only 4.5 kilometers from the Speedway Sports Complex, where the National Aquatic Center, the Rio Olympic Arena and the Barra Velodrome will be built. Riocentro, another important RIO 2007 site where nine categories will be presented, is one kilometer away. The Pan American Village will also serve as housing for the Para Pan American Games from August 12 to 19, 2007, and its planning already includes adaptations for Para-Olympic athletes. Right after this event, the Village will be used by delegations taking part in the Judo World Championship to be held in Rio from September 6 to 9, 2007. The Pan American Village is another important legacy of RIO 2007 for the city - after the sports events, the structure will be turned into a residential apartment building. The laying of the cornerstone of the Pan American Village took place on October 3, 2003. Representatives from all the Olympic Committees of the Americas and PASO attended the ceremony. baron-pierreIV Posted August 10, 2004 Report Share Posted August 10, 2004 Question for Rio boosters: OK, so Rio has the 2007 Pan AMerican Games, Brazil will have the 2014 World Cup, wouldn't 2016 be too soon to be bidding for the Olympic Games? I mean it's rare that the same country will get a World Cup and an Olympic Games in 2 years (OK, the US was an exception, but it is a Northern hermisphere country, and is a developed country). Can Brazil -- if it manages to win the 2016 OG bid -- sustain hosting those 2 big events just w/in 2 years? I need thoughtful answers, NOT jingoistic answers. World Cup host countries now use at least 9 cities (on in the case of Korea-Japan, some 17 cities between the 2 of them). Funny, nobody talks about HOW expensive the 2002 World CUp was!! World Cup host countries now use at least 9 cities (on in the case of Korea-Japan, some 17 cities between the 2 of them). Funny, nobody talks about HOW expensive the 2002 World CUp was!! Except for 3 or 4 stadia, the remaining 13 or 14 were BRAND NEW stadia!?! They did that because both Korea and Japan didn't have big football stadiums to host the Cup, so they had to build them. That's not the case of Brazil, who has at least 25 stadiums with 30.000-plus seats. The problem is that most of them need some repairing. I also don't think that it will be that easy for Brazil to get WC 2014... everybody is talking about Brazil, but what about if Argentina, Chile, or Mexico also bid?,.... Assinatura de contrato para a Linha 4 do Metrô fica para 2005 O Globo RJ TV RIO - O prefeito do Rio decidiu adiar a assinatura do contrato para a realização da Linha 4 do Metrô. O documento só deve ser assinado na próxima administração e, com o adiamento, a obra não deve ficar pronta a tempo para os Jogos Pan-Americanos de 2007. Cesar Maia resolveu acatar a recomendação do Tribunal de Contas do Município (TCM), que desaconselhou a assinatura do contrato que daria início às obras nos últimos meses da atual gestão, devido ao risco de descumprimento da Lei de Responsabilidade Fiscal. O trecho liga a Barra à Gávea e levaria até dois anos e meio para ser construído. A Concessionária Rio-Barra, responsável pela obra, disse que precisará rever seus cálculos, pois deveria iniciar as obras em dezembro para concluí-la a tempo do Pan. Segundo a assessoria da Rio-Barra, o prazo de entrega da obra é de 30 meses, o que permitiria que a obra fosse iniciada em janeiro, mas a concessionária diz precisar de um mês para a realização de testes. But in my pov it's a dull idea to postpone the contract, to leave it for the next administration... if they do that, they will need to review all the contracts prices, generating a unecessary bureaucracy what surely will delay even more the works. This Tuesday (03/08), the mark of 20,000 volunteers was reached on the Rio 2007 website (www.rio2007.org.br) with the registration of Cristiano Mazzoleni, a 23 year old physical education teacher from Bento Ribeiro, in the North Zone of Rio. Up to 15,000 volunteers will be used in RIO 2007. They will be selected from a database prepared by using the information obtained when registering on the Rio 2007 website (under opportunities). "I would love to work in my area, in my own country. Working in the Pan American Games would be very important for my Curriculum Vitae", says Cristiano, a recent Physical Education graduate. According to the General Secretary of the Organizing Committee of the Rio 2007 Pan American Games (CO-RIO), Carlos Roberto Osório, the interest in volunteer work for RIO 2007 shows the level of support for the organization of the mega-sporting event. "The significant number of volunteer candidates three years before the event, before this program has even been formally launched, shows that the population of Rio is totally involved with Rio 2007", states Carlos Roberto Osório. The Rio 2007 Volunteer Program will select volunteers with the suitable profile for each area, using criteria that also take social aspects into account. "If anyone is going to work in a Basketball competition, it is important that they understand the sport", explains Carlos Roberto Osório, adding that living near venues will also be taken into account. Another concern will be to prepare volunteers for RIO 2007 through training programs. Those interested in working as a volunteer in RIO 2007 must register on the official website (www.rio2007.org.br) entering their personal details and qualifications on the registration form, which will be used in the future for the selection of volunteers by CO-RIO. Rogerioandrade Posted August 23, 2004 Report Share Posted August 23, 2004 Ok. So, in the matter of marketing and divulgation, BOC and CORIO are doing a great job. The website and the presentations done at the Brazil Home in Athens are impressing everybody. I just hope(and i pray for that) that our politicians keep the high hype around Rio2007 also inside their offices. The delay in the subway system construction is frustrating (although it's still possible to build the system until the beginning of the Games).
