CONCACAF teams kick off 2014 World Cup qualifiers

ZURICH (AP) — Qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil will kick off with a preliminary round involving teams from the CONCACAF region.

FIFA says the 10 lowest-ranked teams from North and Central America, and the Caribbean will meet in home-and-away playoffs scheduled June 3 and 7.

Montserrat plays Belize, Anguilla meets the Dominican Republic, U.S. Virgin Islands plays the British Virgin Islands, Aruba faces St. Lucia and Bahamas plays Turks and Caicos.

The five winners join 19 other CONCACAF teams in a group stage when FIFA conducts the worldwide qualifying draw July 30 in Rio de Janeiro.

Top-ranked CONCACAF countries, including the U.S. and Mexico, enter at a 12-team third-round stage.

CONCACAF has three guaranteed places in Brazil.

42: Number of Brazilian MPs who withdrew their calls for an inquiry into alleged financial irregularities on Brazil's 2014 Fifa World Cup committee after 2014 committee head Ricardo Teixeira visited them in Brasilia and gave them gifts. Teixeira denies claims he improperly lobbied the MPs, and says the gifts of Brazil shirts were just "to thank the illustrious members for their hospitality".

Who should say it is the journalist who addressed this matter. The article is unclear. Perhaps he is referring to this:

Profits

The society between the CBF and the COL had already been criticized in November, as the contract of the committee allowed Mr. Teixeira to bag 100% of the profits. The institution has 99.99% of the equity, of only R$ 10 thousand, while the executive is responsible for the other 0.01%.

A paragraph of the text allowed the future profits of the committee to be distributed according to the wish of the partners, regardless of the number of partners. Thus, the President of CBF could direct the profits to CBF itself or to CBF’s projects.

Later, one of the clauses of the contract was changed, ending the lack of proportion in the distribution of profits. Despite the change, the document does not specify what use shall be given to the money obtained through the competition.

International Broadcast Centre to be hosted in Rio de Janeiro

At the conclusion of the second FIFA/LOC Management Board meeting at the Home of FIFA in Zurich today, FIFA and the Local Organising Committee announced that the International Broadcast Centre (IBC) for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ will be hosted in Rio de Janeiro.

The IBC will be hosted at the Riocentro. The decision was taken by the board based on a highly competitive process with detailed analysis from various FIFA broadcast experts, with all three candidates – Brasilia, Sao Paulo and the future host of the IBC – having submitted high-quality bids. Rio de Janeiro was chosen for many reasons, including the quality of the infrastructure, the variety of accommodation and activities available in the city as well as its strongly expressed willingness to provide all possible support for the IBC and its users.

“I can tell you it was a very difficult decision; all candidates were of great quality and showed huge commitment. But unfortunately there can only be one selected host and we considered that the best overall for FIFA was Rio de Janeiro. This IBC will be one of the most advanced information centres in the world for the months of June and July 2014. It is a vital component, linking the FIFA World Cup to the rest of the world and ensuring that people across the globe have the latest and best coverage of our beautiful game,” explained FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke, who chaired the meeting together with LOC President Ricardo Teixeira.

The event as a whole, in which the IBC plays an integral part, will create a legacy far beyond the FIFA World Cup in terms of state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure for the country, which can be used for future events. To give an idea of the scale of the IBC, in 2010, 179 broadcasters from more than 70 countries had on-site productions with 13,000 staff members in South Africa.

Other topics discussed during the board meeting included the on-going preparations for the Preliminary Draw for the 2014 FIFA World Cup™, which will take place at the Marina da Gloria in Rio de Janeiro on 30 July 2011. “We are very pleased with the progress achieved and cannot wait to host the teams and the world media for the first major event on the way to 2014. We can promise a great treat for the guests at the venue but also on TV. We have been told that this Preliminary Draw will break a new record in terms of live broadcasts,” explained Ricardo Teixeira.

The FIFA/LOC Management Board also received detailed reports on various operational areas including stadium construction/upgrade progress, with most activities being well on track. However, it was made clear that only cities with a stadium ready in early 2013 will be eligible as FIFA Confederations Cup venues. Consequently, the cities of Sao Paulo and Natal are not eligible for the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Concerns remain with regard to airport operations and capacities as well as transport infrastructure, which have been addressed with the highest authorities in Brazil. “It is crucial that any venues which host the FIFA World Cup have adequate infrastructure to be able to cater for the tens of thousands of spectators and allow them to move around the city for a particular match. If this is not the case, we cannot stage matches in those cities,” stressed the FIFA Secretary General at the conclusion of the meeting.

The next FIFA/LOC Management Board meeting is scheduled for 26 July at the start of the week of Preliminary Draw activities in Rio de Janeiro. The FIFA Confederations Cup venues and the match schedule for the FIFA World Cup will be presented on 29 July 2011 following the first meeting of the Organising Committee for the FIFA World Cup™ in Rio de Janeiro.
