  1. If there is really zero chance of the IOC not picking 3 hosts in a row in Asia, they should say so and keep contries from spending $100m+ trying. PS - The pollution air problem in Beijing is much strong now than in '08. Winter only makes it worse, both because its worse in Winter in general, and also because they don't have the same options for cleaning the air. You can close factories. You can't keep people from heating their homes.
  2. The other problem - perhaps the bigger problem - is that US and Canada have a much more "serious" border than Poland / Slovakia.
  3. I'd be willing to bet at least two of those three won't bid for 2024.
  4. Uh, Tony, you do know that cities host games, not countries... right?
  5. The only reason there is confusion is that one poster insists on saying it's a joint bid.
  6. Always be careful with such reports. How was the quesion asked. "Wouldn't it be great if the Olympics came to Poland?" Or "Should a 2% tax be implemented on all blablas to pay for infrastructure needed to bring the Olmypic cames to Poland."
  7. I think if pitched correctly - "A celebration the last 100 years of Olympics" the IOC voters might like it.
  8. I think it means that Dhaka won't bid for 2022.
  9. You guys are totally being trolled. Nobody in the US hates Toronto that much. Heck, you'd be hard pressed to find anyone that has *any* opinion of Toronto.
  10. Thought #1... That reports overstates the threat/likelihood of a US bid and the value of hosting a few World Cup Soccer games. Thought #2... No matter how beautiful Toronto actually is, some people will always think of it as the great white north
  11. The IOC voters are fine with wannabe fascist dictators. As long as they are stable.
  12. Or it will show the IOC doesn't see the distance to Are for one dicipline to be a big deal. Which explaines why they've overlooked it many, many times in the past. Time are a changing. For something like Sochi, NBC's money is a drop in the bucket. Resource-rich countries rules by despots can easily afford to do with NBC's money if that's what it takes to bring them the games.
  13. 1) Traveling in winter isn't hard. Someday you may grasp this this easy-to-grasp point. 2) You should think of parathletes as "Olympians" rather than as poor handicaped people who can't manage to get from point A to point B. Your post is extrondinarily insulting.
  14. These guys are professional skiiers. They jet all over the globe from week to week, finishing one event then heading off to the next. Having "only" three days to fly from one part of Sweden to the other just isn't the obstacle some of you think. And of the 3,000 or so athletes, how many will participate in both long and short alpine events. 20? 30?
  15. Of course the schedule will work, why wouldn't it? It's been mentioned multiple times that you can set up a slalom course at the downhill for the supercombined. You are sticking poles in the ground, nto building a vast building. No, *alpine* skiing is not a huge chunck of the the WOG's. Again, we aren't having a difference of opinion here. These are factual numbers that have already been posted in this thread. It's nothing like Althetic in terms of size, number of athletes, medals, etc. You may think it's a fair comparison... or you could look it up and see for yourself that it's not.
  16. No, that would not certainlly split the games in half. Again, this isn't just a matter of fact, it's facts that have already been posted in this thread. Alpine skiing is one of many sports. So even if all the alpine events are in Are, it's not anywhere close to "half". And if they do split the alpine events, it's not like they would be traveling back and forth. The subset who compete in both the longer and shorter vents would travel one way, once.; First events in Are, then move to Stockholm for the shorter vents... probably with a 3-day break between the events. Also, keep in mind they won't be riding in the back of a bus for seven hours. They have airports, planes, private jets, etc.
  17. We've drifted out of opinion and into fact. The numbers were posted earlier in the thread. The alpine events aren't anywhere close to "nearly half". As a percentage of the total games, it's very comparable to someplace like Beijing for number of events/athletes more than 500km away. If this is the basis of your anti-Sweden, you are simply wrong. You do realize we are talking about the same events, don't you? Downhill / Super G. For Krakow your attitude is "it's only a couple events". For Sweden, it's "nearly half the games". IT'S THE SAME EVENTS!!! W
  18. Remember, we aren't talking about all snow events.... probably we are only talking about the Downhill / Super G / GS. You will still have opportunity to visit snow venue "nearby." Even when the alpine events are "only" a couple hours away, it's near impossible to attend the big alpine events and a skating event the same day. The big alpine events are typically scheduled around mid day. And it take much longer than you might expect to get off a mounting, to a transportation hub and back..
  19. Again, unlike you, the Sweded know how to move people in winter. How many days last year were people unable to move between Are and Stockholm? When you are making up imaginary problems to emphasize how big a problem is, that's a good sign the problem isn't that big.
  20. Why? From a logistic standpoint, there's no differnce between having equstrian/sailing/football events far from the stadium, and having the Alpine events far away. If they aren't a make-or-brake issue for the SOG (and they clearly aren't,), why would they be for the WOG? And for a non-logistical "atmosphere" standpoing, I would think moving the alpine events out of town would be *less* of an issue since the alpine events are always out of town. The downhill skiiers never join in with all the world meeting in one place, bla, bla, bla.
