ghost1 Posted August 7, 2006 Report Posted August 7, 2006 Russian charged in Olympics bid shakedown Associated Press ROSTOV-ON-DON, Russia -- Police arrested an official in Sochi for trying to exhort money from a local business owner in connection with the Black Sea city's bid for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Sergei Yevdokimenko, who is responsible for federal government property in the resort town, and Viktor Babiiy, director of a regional trout farm, have been charged with blackmail and soliciting bribes, Maj. Gen. Solodovnikov, deputy head of the Interior Ministry for southern Russia, said Monday. According to Solodovnikov, the two were demanded that a local business owner give up some of his land, saying it was needed to build sports facilities for the games. The businessman was told that if he paid $410,000, he could retain use of the land, Solodovnikov said. Sochi, wedged between the Black Sea and soaring mountains, is considered one of the strongest bidders for the 2014 Olympics. The International Olympic Committee will chose the winning city next year. Andrew8 Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Well... of course this isn't good news for Sochi, but I think how they handle the situation would be more important...
Goodwin Posted August 8, 2006 Report Posted August 8, 2006 Suspected are arrested. There will be a proceeding. I do not think, that at this stage the given event will strike the big blow under the application of Sochi. In Greece and in Italy so anybody also have not detained...
arwebb Posted August 14, 2006 Report Posted August 14, 2006 We have seen that it is not so much the scandal that is the issue, but how the bid team responds to it. Getting the response right could be the making of Sochi.
NYCD 2012 Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 Dima Bilan is going to sing for Sochi !
Michael Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 It's Russia. What do you expect? The arresting Police are probably just as guilty as the guy getting arrested.
baron-pierreIV Posted September 5, 2006 Report Posted September 5, 2006 Dima Bilan is going to sing for Sochi ! Is this connected with the thread? This Dima Bilan will 'sing' as in squeal for the authorities?
SochiFan Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 It's Russia. What do you expect? The arresting Police are probably just as guilty as the guy getting arrested. The Olympics are in Beijing in 2008. Corruption is just as much of a problem there. Sochi will be very vigilant in this area. Its a challenge but "What do you expect - its Russia" comments are precisely the perception that Sochi needs to fight and I hope they do a good job. If the Summer Games can be held in China RUssia can host a WInter Games.
