I know it´s Off-topic, but still about the Rio MotoGP...

The race could be transferred to another Speedway, in Curitiba, Brasilia or Sao Paulo, couldn´t it ? Eberybody new, since last year, that the speedway would "suffer" a lot of works...

anyway, what´s done it´s done. I just hope to see the Brazilian MotoGP again in the future...

Olympic Torch-The Beginning Of Planning For The Torch Relay

2/21/2005

The ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch Relay through Rio de Janeiro was considered the best organized among those held by the 34 cities that took part in the world course. The evaluation was performed by the organizers of the Athens 2004 World Olympic Torch Relay, who were in Rio de Janeiro on Monday, February 21 to present the results to those responsible for the city Task Force. "The decision to elect Rio de Janeiro as having the best Olympic Torch Relay organization makes the citys people the big winner" said licensed president of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, Carlos Arthur Nuzman, who personally directed the operation of the Olympic Torch Relay in Rio de Janeiro on June 13 and received the World Relay organizers at a meeting in his home. "This shows that Rio de Janeiro and the local population are prepared to organize the Pan American Games of 2007 and any other international events in an unforgettable way."

For Rio de Janeiro Mayor Cesar Maia this was yet another demonstration of Rios strength and organizational capacity. "One of the features of the events that happen in Rio is that, in addition to having the experience to carry them out, the city gives them an international visibility that few places in the world can," said Maia. "I am sure that these factors were fundamental for the positive evaluation of Olympic Torch passage through Rio." On Monday, February 21, Executive Director of the Worldwide Torch Rally, Steve McCarthy, was at the City Palace, headquarters of the City of Rio de Janeiro, where he was welcomed by Municipal Secretary for the Pan American Games, Cláudio Versiani. McCarthy presented Secretary Versiani with a torch which is destined for Mayor Cesar Maia.

The main points analyzed by the organizers of the Olympic Torch World Relay were infrastructure, workforce, protection of sponsor brands, effective communication of Olympic values and principally the ability to combine all of these items. "Rio did this better than any other city and her people also showed a lot of heart and soul, which filled the event with emotion," explained McCarthy, adding that the second best evaluation went to the city of Cabo in South Africa. The results presented by McCarthy in Rio were also shown to the International Olympic Committee.

There were 1.4 million people in the streets of Rio during the Relay, second only to Beijing with 2 million, but the evaluation of the organizers was that there was much more emotion in Rio. Besides this, the celebration show at Flamengo beach that closed the day was spectacular and considered to be best in the world, according to the evaluation of the Torch Relay organizers. For Carlos Roberto Osório, Secretary-General of the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Torch Relay Task Force, Rio's performance was achieved through collective effort. "This result must be divided with the three levels of government that worked in perfect sync and coordination, in both the planning and operational phases," recalled Osório.

The Pan American Torch - Steve McCarthy, in his passage through Rio, also met with the team from the Pan American Games - Rio 2007 Organizing Committee (CO-RIO). The meeting marked the beginning of planning for the Pan American Torch Relay for RIO 2007. The goal of CO-RIO is to finalize the Pan American Torch project by August of this year to present it at the PASO Assembly that will be held in Rio de Janeiro. The Pan American Torch will be ignited on the Chichén Itzá pyramid in Mexico, and its Relay will end at Maracanã Stadium at the Opening Ceremony on July 13, 2007, when the Pan American flame will be lit.

Numbers - The passing of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Torch ran a course of 49 kilometers through the streets of 16 Rio de Janeiro city neighborhoods (Maracanã, Rio Comprido, Center, Lapa, Glória, Catete, Largo do Machado, Botafogo, Jardim Botânico, Lagoa, Gávea, Leblon, Ipanema, Copacabana, Urca and Flamengo.) It was the largest logistics operation ever carried out in this country, mobilizing COB and various entities and departments of the three levels of government - municipal, state and federal. The passing of the Olympic Torch Relay in Rio also involved Riotur, the Municipal Guard, CET-Rio, the Government Municipal Department, Comlurb, Rioluz, the Municipal Health Department, the Military Police, the Fire Department, the Civil Police, the Federal Police, the East Military Command and the Port Authority.

Among the 125 leaders chosen were great names from Brazilian sports like Pelé, Gustavo Kuerten, Ronaldo, Gustavo Borges, Oscar and Daiane dos Santos.

There are only 2 tracks that are FIM-ready for MotoGp right now: Interlagos and Jacarepagua.

Any other track have to be verified by FIM (same works for FIA International Races).

About Interlagos, as far as I can remember, the mayor wasn´t much in favour of other events besides the F1 race (more of budgetary problems).

What is worse is the fact that there was also a Bike Show event scheduled for the week of MotoGP.

Read it at: SOS Autodromo do Rio

Man, do I really wanted to see our mayor crack its fractured spine right now....

PASO-ODEPA Commission Report Approves Organization Of Rio 2007

2/26/2005

The Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) Pan American Games Coordination Commission approved the planning and organizational work of the multi-sports event based on information that it had collected during the inspection visit to Rio de Janeiro from January 24-27, 2005. In the report delivered at the PASO Executive Committee meeting that ended on Friday, February 25 in Mexico City, the Coordination Committee considered the work developed by the Organizing Committee of Pan American Games Rio 2007 (CO-RIO) as "serious and responsible."

In its report, the Coordination Commission approved the efficiency of the work schedule and highlighted the motivation of all those involved in preparing for the event - CO-RIO, COB and the three levels of government (city, state and federal). CO-RIO also presented a report detailing the evolution of the organization since the last meeting of the PASO Executive Committee, which was held on October 7 and 8, 2004 in Mexico City.

The results pleased the President of PASO, Mario Vázquez Raña. "With the report from the Coordination Committee and the information from CO-RIO, the Pan American sports community is certain that it is taking firm steps toward an unforgettable edition of the Pan American Games at an Olympic level," said Vázquez Raña during the PASO Executive Committee meeting. The approval of the CO-RIO's work was celebrated by the Secretary-General of the organization, Carlos Roberto Osório. "This gives us the certainty that were on the right path, and we have presented the documents that attest to the complete fulfillment of our obligations to the PASO Executive Committee," commented Osório.

The city of Guadalajara, Mexico presented its candidacy to the PASO Executive Committee to host the 2011 Pan American Games. The election will be held in 2006.

we need new news!!

Well, they are saying that there will be a cycling event on March 20th (no details at the RIO 2007 website).

It will be the PanAmerican Cycling Cup, with live TV and 40 participants from 9 different countries (Brazil will have 2 teams), and they will use part of the Road Cycling track scheduled for 2007.

What bothers me most is the fact that, once again, they use cycling to attract people and still talk about doing a provisional velodrome, which will be a wonderful way to attract new cyclists to the sport.

When I say that our mayor don´t like sports, but only entertainment and media appearance, I am not joking.

Speaking of velodrome and race track, see the latest on SOS Autodromo do Rio

Oh, and what about the pictures of the Joao Havelange Stadium, any updates?

The first traffic intervention works was concluded last week, The ring road Pedro Ernesto was oppened in 1st March. It's an important traffic intervention to the Pan Village. ODEPA - PASO would like to include non olympic sports like Bowling, aquatic ski and squash.

according the RIO2007 web site :

"CO-RIO has officially requested that PASO not include categories from non-Olympic international federations in the RIO 2007 program because of a unanimous decision of the CO-RIO Executive Committee at the session on February 18 that involved the participation of representatives from the three levels of government. The request was based on studies carried out by CO-RIO's areas of Sports and Marketing, taking various points into consideration, including: budgetary impact, impact on operational complexity, prior existence of venues (and their conditions); interest of the Brazilian public, of the media in general and of sponsors; legacy of the Games vs. investments; stage of development and sportive organization of the various categories. The final decision on the matter will be made at the next PASO meeting, to take place in Rio de Janeiro in August of this year. "

The President of PASO-ODEPA Mr Vazques Raña said that will discuss with brazilian sports authorities the inclusion of this kind of non-olympic sport in RIO2007 Pan Games Program.

I see. I need to go to the 2005 World Games website to find out if these sports are in its program. I'm pretty sure it is, but I'll just check just to be sure.

Ok, if THIS is not enough to convince anyone about the real intentions of our 'sporty' mayor, please let me know...

Rio Loses X-Games Latin America (in Portuguese)

And don´t come up with the argument that "Oh, but there are the test events" because they are just that, Tests, so after 2008, Rio will be a forgotten city in the sporting world.

Once again, the same arguments, no money. Everything now is excused for the Pan 2007. I am starting to believe that the budget for the PanAm Stadium will be much more than expected...

Em crise, Pan do Rio vive jogo do empurra

Jogos devem custar, no mínimo, US$ 337 milhões

LANCEPRESS!

Parque Olímpico do Rio - Autódromo Nelson Piquet

Para o Pan 2007, na Arena Multiuso, com capacidade para 15 mil espectadores, haverá competições de basquete (masculino e feminino) e ginástica artística; no Parque Aquático, com espaço para dez mil pessoas, serão disputadas as modalidades de saltos ornamentais, natação e nado sincronizado;

I like those renderings, the proposed installations look very harmonious.

These pictures are referred to the Olympic Park, currently being build in the Jacarepagua Speedway Racetrack. These structures will be used for swimming, basketball, gimnastics and cycling.

It may be concluded in December, 2006. The installations also will be used for the Parapanamerican Games, right after the PAnAms

Two things:

1 - Those pictures are nowhere to be a reality in the short term. The driver´s association of Rio went to court and got a  this week to restrain any modification of the actual Race Track, which means no bulldozer can enter inside the venue.

Honestly, if they finish the arenas, you can expect something like March 2007, being an optimistic estimate.

The Auto Racing community will do everything to stop the works on the Race Track until the Track is fully preserved for its main purpose.

(Follow those steps at: SOS Autodromo do Rio )

2 - The pictures of the Swimming Complex are completely different from the firsts drawings e.g. much less pharaonic. (Watch it below) Talk about reality check here.

Well, hopefully they will able to finish the Olympic Park, it would help in case Rio applies for another Olympic Bid. And personally, I prefer the new rendering to the first drawings.
