Ruling Czar Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 Naturally, Chicago is one of the finest cities in the world. There is no argument there. But the fatigue of seeing another summer games come to the states whenever they've come to the western hemisphere is just too dominant the feeling in Olympic circles right now. Everyone in the Global Olympic Movement has referred to need a change of scene, especially when the games come to the new world. So Chicago might end up like a Toronto 2008 bid- spectacular but..........won't do very well in the long run.

Toronto lost because of a huge favouritism to Beijing that had to do with Samaranch's delusions and money.
cfm Jeremie Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Toronto lost because of a huge favouritism to Beijing that had to do with Samaranch's delusions and money. Among other things: the US bidding for 2012 (already back then) meant US supporters would vote for anything but Toronto the fact that many European countries were preparing bids for 2012 meant that some European voters wanted to get Beijing out of the way for the future Canada bidding at the same time for the 2008 Games, 2010 Games, IOC Presidency, WADA headquarters was foolish interference between votes for 2008 and IOC Presidency Beijing getting 2008 is a little more complicated than "Evil Samaranch" (though he did play a big part).

I was merely making the point that a lot more was at play that the IOC not wanting to go back to North America at the time, if ever that did come into play. Dick has no chance at the presidency, the majority European IOC would have wanted someone that is less forceful and less combative, it was Pound after all that lead the anti-corruption campaign after the Salt Lake City scandal. I also think if the vote had moved on to more rounds, that Toronto would have built up support, Beijing had started before hand that it was unlikely they would bid again if they failed, therefore European support could have started to shift as the realization of what a Beijing games would mean for the IOC during the vote. Also I think yourself has attested to, results can change based on rounds and who gets eliminated when, if London or Paris had fallen in the 3rd round, it could be extremely likely Madrid would be preparing 2012 and not London.
Ruling Czar Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Oh yeah, and the Salt lake scandal doesn't help either......so terrorism in atlanta....the salt lake scandal......and that pretty much presents us with a pic we don't wnna see.
baron-pierreIV Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 just you, czar. Someone who doesn't vote.
cfm Jeremie Posted March 21, 2008 Report Posted March 21, 2008 Oh yeah, and the Salt lake scandal doesn't help either......so terrorism in atlanta....the salt lake scandal......and that pretty much presents us with a pic we don't wnna see. Please... The Olympics are a terror magnet, no matter where they take place. The centennial park bombing was a tragic event but I don't see how it could affect Chicago's bid. Salt Lake got caught but back then every bid city was doing more or less the same... The Salt Lake Games remain, by far, one of the best Olympic Games ever. If anything, it's a tribute to the US ability to stage great games.
Wagner Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 OK, let's reprint it again since some people obvisouly insist on making their own world rankings rather than going by the officially recognized and accepted ones:Per the IMF: 1 United States 13,543,330 2 People's Republic of China 11,606,3361 3 India 4,726,537 4 Japan 4,346,080 5 Germany 2,714,469 6 United Kingdom 2,270,884 7 France 2,040,109 8 Brazil 2,013,893 9 Russia 1,908,739 10 Italy 1,888,492 11 Spain Per the World Bank: 1 United States 12,376,100 2 People's Republic of China 5,333,200a 3 Japan 3,870,300 4 Germany 2,514,800 5 India 2,341,000 6 United Kingdom 1,901,700 7 France 1,862,200 8 Russia 1,697,500 9 Italy 1,626,300 10 Brazil 1,585,100 11 Spain 1,183,500 and per the CIA World FactBook: 1 United States 13,860,000 2 People's Republic of China 7,043,000 3 Japan 4,305,000 4 India 2,965,000 5 Germany 2,833,000 6 United Kingdom 2,147,000 7 Russia 2,076,000 8 France 2,067,000 9 Brazil 1,838,000 10 Italy 1,800,000 11 Spain 1,362,000 Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(PPP) Don't worry, you're still ahead of Spain but go check your facts first, wagner, before you post any more nonsense. The fact is that I know and everyone who knows economy or has ever traveled to Brazil noted, We can do and perfectly!! That´s no doubts! But I also know that some strangers ( specific american who I have ever studied with in Brazil ) didn´t learn it in the school.. and other things.. This person, for example , was amazing when saw the Rio city in the airplane ( beach , high modern building and etc ) she though here were just the amazon forest.. After that I was scared.. And here is the third world ??? Here has the worse schools ??? ...so, anything is wrong... The fact is that if it weren´t because of the political problem and big, big problem I was totaly convinced that will be Rio, but the money ( in this case by the gangs in glamour suits ) can make it diferent. Rio could , for example, be out of the short list.. what would be a terrible error , We have to be sincere !! SO USA HAS THE POWER... WE SAW IT IN THE SALT LAKE CITY CASE.. AND ON AND ON !! It´s the main reason , Chicago is afraid of Rio and it is so clear as The american corrupt 2016 bid...

tyler Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 After reading all what this thread had to say, it seems ironic to me that the three pictures of Rio that Wagner just put up did not even include the imposing Jesus statue at all. I honestly think that religion has no weight at all in choosing a sufficient city for a Games. Violence, terrorism, and so on are definitely another story. I've a close friend of mine who did an internship in Brazil last summer and got robbed in Rio in one of the nicer areas of the city. Will Rio be able to stand, what, millions of people coming to the town. It'll be like candy for the gangs, to be honest. Or will Rio, if selected and subsequently humbled under pressure, undergo a dramatic shift crime-wise just as Beijing did with pollution? Just my two cents.
tyler Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Well, I take that back, all except one of Wagner's pictures do not boast the large deity.
baron-pierreIV Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Mr. Wagner, I am sure the IOC members will be thoroughly swayed by your images of Rio.

About the statue I think it´s not necessary to comment but.... It´s a simbol of the city... and the city that don´t have one ... what can I do ??? And Rio has more than wonderful and better postals... You can see the venues on the web , they are wonderful too : www.rio2016.org.br It's really funny... Your friend was robbed??? What a coincidence... A FRIEND OF MINE WAS ROBBED IN NEW YORK CITY LAST FRIDAY NEAR THE WORLD TRADE CENTER that disappeared because of the TERRORISM.... What a coincidence..... VIOLENCE IN THE UNITED STATES ???... What a shame!! The world don´t live in a make believe... Neither USA....

tyler Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 Quite bittersweet. Apologies to your friend, must've been a very ironic locale. Do you see any New York City bid plans in the future? I think not.
Wagner Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 UAUUHH !! Do you want see the poor part of Rio ?? Ahh!! We have.. But it doesn´t have in your city??? NO ?? You´re Kidding... Tell me:: Where is that paradise ??? But you can´t lie , ok??? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Wagner Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 I hope the members of IOC look the photos of Rio i posted.. Yes I want ... I want to see the rivals improve their ones... Without "photoshop" , ok?? I know your weak arguments.. but.. beauty isn´t relevant ?? ok! But when someone or , in this case , something doesn´t have it's envied. So... Their fans try to pick out faults in other ones... Envy!!.. Sorry!
