AtlantaJeff Posted June 8, 2007 Report Share Posted June 8, 2007 The BBC is reporting on its Olympics website that IOC officials have had discussions with officials on the possibility of adding skateboarding to the London 2012 games. An IOC spokeswoman confirmed it was possible but would not confirm whether or not discussions have gotten that far yet. BBC article (short) Any thoughts? The Winter Olympics added snowboard cross, and I really think it's the best, most exciting thing they've added in years. That being said, I'm not a fan of adding the Tony Hawk-type artistic form of skateboarding. Judged sports are open to all sorts of corruption, favoritism, and controversy, and I think the Olympics already has enough of that to deal with. The classic judged sports are great (gymnastics, diving, figure skating, I guess boxing counts too, etc.), but I really don't want to see any more of them added. On the other hand, there isn't much question that skateboarding would draw a lot of attention and interest, particularly from the young. First and foremost, though, BRING BACK BASEBALL!!! These "sports" need to go to or remain in the X-Games. Snowboarding hs been a popular sport in the Winter Games, but I never thought it was a good decision to add it the sports list of the Olympics. I can see you are a true traditionalist. And nothing wrong with that. But what about something like Modern Pentathlon. As De Coubertin's own "baby", tradition would dictate that it should stay. It could even be considered the most "olympic" of all modern olympic sports. But it would be hard to argue that it enjoyed a great viewership or popularity, it is a highly specialised sport, and with its requirements for horses and multiple venues etc, not something that the average person from a poorer country would or could easily take up?
