Do you think if the arena had been approved for construction back then (such as the in the original CalgaryNEXT project) that the bid might have fared better in the referendum?

Everything is whacked here right now. Good thing we did not go after the Winter Games. The latest news, the deal for the new event center/NHL arena fell thru in December. There was a disagreement between the city and CSEC (Calgary Sports and Entertainment[Flames and Stampeders owners]). Construction was supposed to begin this month. The city is still hopeful an arena deal will go ahead. Should've expected something like this to happen with a new mayor and new city council that got voted in in the fall. The Green Line (C-Train) is also still being looked at. Construction on that was supposed to begin in 2019. Meanwhile, the longer these projects linger, the more expensive they will be. Office vacancy rates downtown are even higher. Six office towers are sitting completely empty. Some smaller ones are being converted to low-income housing. I'm contemplating heading back to BC myself since there's not much going on.

On the brightside, Ghostbusters Afterlife is great, which was all shot here in Calgary and surrounding towns. The Walmart Paul Rudd is in is the one I shop at, Deerfoot City. The film industry is booming and expanding here. After Ghostbusters, they shot Fraggle Rock in the same studio. Last summer they shot the Predator prequel here. and currently, since the start of last summer, The Last of Us has been filming here, and is still filming. Saw their crew last week filming at Northland Village Mall.

  2. I say go for it. Why not. The venues are there and still in great shape. The only things they'd need are Athletes' Villages in Vancouver and Whistler and perhaps a curling arena since 2010's was converted. As far as other infrastructure goes, key things like the the Sea to Sky hwy improvements and the Skytrain Canada Line were completed for the 2010 games. They are currently building a replacement for the Pattulo Bridge, and will be replacing the Massey Tunnel on hwy 99 which is supposed to be done in 2030 (could be accelerated due to the games [building an 8-lane tunnel to replace the current 4-lane tunnel]). The Skytrain network is currently being expanded too. Hopefully covid is gone soon so we can have some fun like in 2010.

Yes but the Tokyo 2020 shop was only ships within Japan.

Well that's real smart. They should've gone international. I probably would've ordered $200 worth minimum. Time to hit an HBC store near me to see if I can at least snag a Team Canada t-shirt.

  4. Since public participation and spectator presence was pretty much nil, It made me wonder how accessible were souvenirs like plush mascots. Was there an online store setup where you could buy official Tokyo 2020 souvenirs, for all the fans that could not travel due to the bug? (at least this way they could make some money back)

I remember after Vancouver 2010, there was a guy in Kelowna that bought up a ton of stuff and setup a pop-up liquidator store. That's where I got most of my Vancouver 2010 swag including a Team Canada away hockey jersey (scored a great deal at less than half the original asking price. Always wear it proudly when winter games are on)

  5. Been chatting with some people, and it seems everyone wants to give Tokyo a second chance at hosting. Have full stadiums of spectators and fans, a cultural olympiad, etc. Tokyo 2036! It's only 15 years from now. Hopefully covid is out of the picture by then. As it stands, 2020 is going to be like Montreal's Big Owe. If the Japanese people would be in support and except, lets make it so!

Where to begin? Do we start a Change.org petition and send it to the 1976 Champion, Fencing? (that's his name right, because that's how he's always introduced? lol)

(one other major factor besides covid; what's climate change gonna be like in 15 years?)

  6. Just crawled out of bed again after watching the live coverage of the ceremony. The replay is on again at 4pm Calgary time. Just got off the phone with my parents as they've been watching the games everyday. My parents too think that the IOC should go back to Tokyo and give them a chance, 2032 would've been good, but Brisbane. So, we're in full support of going back after Brisbane and if the Japanese would except it, Tokyo 2036!

  7. Despite what is going on, a decent games. The Japanese managed to pull it off. Yeah, the spectators and fans were missing, but what can you do? I still have to find replays of a various sports CBC seemed to have passed by, like Equestrian. Didn't see one clip from Equestrian. Didn't even see surfing.

We got a six month break now, but who knows what's gonna happen in those six months with Beijing.
