Likely BC's most reputable pollster, Mustel Group, released the results of an opinion poll today, which belies the notion that VANOC has lost public confidence (or the government, for that matter).

RE: Global Poll Regarding Olympics’ Budget

From: Mustel Group Market Research

Date: September 18, 2006

A poll commissioned by Global TV regarding the recent Auditor General’s report regarding the 2010 Olympics reveals:

A majority of BC adults expect the Olympics to go over budget (78% “not very” or “not at all confident” games will stay within budget).

However, residents tend to be confident in the VANOC management as well as in the provincial government, federal government, as well as the Auditor General in their respective roles in the games.

If spending does exceed the budget, residents would prefer government to contribute additional funds (55%) than to scale back or eliminate venues (39%, with 6% undecided).

Opinions are more divided on the issue of whether or not such projects as improvements to the Sea-to-Sky Highway should be included in the Olympics’ budget, but a greater proportion (53%) believe these should be excluded from the budget rather than included (43% with 4% undecided).

Opinions overall are consistent across the province and across various demographic segments with the exception that older residents (55 years plus) are more concerned about budget overruns, less supportive of providing additional funding, and less confident in all parties involved in the games.

However, they do tend to believe that additional projects (e.g., highway improvements) should not be included in the Olympics budget.

The following charts detail the findings.

2010 organizers look to sign more sponsorship deals

Vancouver Sun

Published: Tuesday, September 19, 2006

Vancouver Olympic organizers expect to sign up to 10 new sponsorship deals this year as they look to surpass more than $700 million in total domestic sponsorship.

Vancouver Olympic Organizing Committee executive vice-president Dave Cobb said Tuesday that with 10 major corporate sponsorship deals worth more than $500 milion already in place, about 40 "second-tier and third-tier" deals still have to be negotiated. The agreements will mainly involve companies with products and services VANOC needs - including hotels, airlines and wineries.

Cobb said domestic and international sponsorship should pay for about half the committee's $1.8-billion operating budget and insisted the $580-million capital budget will be met. The federal and provincial governments contributed $55 million each to the capital budget last month to cover rising construction costs.

"We will not go over that budget," Cobb said. "If people don't expect we're going to do that, then their expectations of us are too low."
