New Stadium Wrap

Following the recommendation by CABE to expose the temporary elements of the stadium rather than hide them, the stadium wrap has been adjusted to expose elements of temporary nature of the stadium.

Im not a fan of doing that with the wrap. I liked the simplicity of it before, now it looks messy. I thought they would use a material so the structure would be visible through it anyway with a stunning design that completely encircles the stadia. Much like the Imax cinema in London.

I also thought then they would not only have static imigary but also project imigary, films, and text of it. How awesome would it look if as the cauldron was lit on the inside of the stadium, flames were projected onto the outside on the wrap turning the whole stadium into the olympic cauldron, visible around the olympic park. I hope they think again!

Why exactly did they recommend this?

"Temporary structure

The unprecedented idea of a temporary Olympic stadium presents exciting design possibilities. We applaud the simplicity and elegance of the structure and we are excited by the potential of the wrap. At the next stage of design development, we encourage the design team to fully exploit and express the temporary nature.

We think that the physically independent components of the stadium - the permanent landscape bowl, and temporary seating stands and roof - should be clearly legible. We therefore note and support the proposal to express the junction between temporary and permanent elements by raising the wrap to reveal the base of the structure.

The drama of the construction and subsequent disassembly of the temporary structure is likely to become an important part of the Olympic spectacle and should be considered as an integral part of the stadium design concept at this stage.

We think that the density of the wrap should allow the temporary structure to be expressed. Importantly, we would expect to see artistic talent of the highest order deployed its design. We assume studies are currently being undertaken into how to re-use or re-cycle what should be an inspiring and meaningful artwork.

LOCOG will need to consider the design integration of the temporary elements, including the wrap and the pods, and their relationship to other temporary structures across the broader Park."

So, what is the legacy to these temporal structures?

Well the temporary stadium components might be being shipped to Chicago or whoever wins 2016. The other temporary arenas will be dismantled and shipped around the country to give grass root sports a boost.

The cleaned up land they were on will be sold to developers.

It`s nice to see legacy in another way cos it`s not good to have stadia everywhere when it can be used by home developers for housing.

One thing I don`t like about the moving of reusable parts is that it can keep on rotating in circle and it`s going to create some problem. When Rio, I mean Chicago, for example, after using these materials it is likely will have to send them to Cape Town(I know Cape Town won`t accept that) and Cape Town would have to send them to the next host. This is somehow going to be disturbing to the quality of stadia we are going to have in the future.

News flash James: hosting olympics always relies on the use of some temporary seats, tents... that in some cases have been used before the Games and will be used after the Games (otherwise, it would be a complete waste of money and resources).

Thank you for that explanation.

Is that the way London-Chicago going to look like?

Well, Madrid and Rio won't want it because they already have their designated brick-and-mortar Olympic stadia. Tokyo is planning a permanent stadium as well. So, fate would seem to say "... it's destined for Chicago...."

Now, Baku... it might throw a whole monkey wrench, to use a pun, into the works...

I dont think they are saying the next host has to take the components eg. the seating, they are saying if they can be used then it will be a good idea. These seat s wont be used for decades to come, its all about each games host passing to the next host things they can use. It makes sense. Plus I dont think games are generally judged on their seats are they, once someones bum is on it who gives a damn what it looks like as long as its comfy and does its job.

The Olympic Park will be fabtastic but the Stadium... It has to be the most expensive temporary venue ever build. I just cant understand the logical thinking behind this!!

The logic is quite simple, Savas. I know we've been over it before but I think it's worth re-stating.

The key plank of London's bid was regeneration of a massively deprived area of the East End of the city. If we then decided we were going to use Wembley, the most likely alternative, as the main stadium, that substantially dilutes the regeneration argument. Also, unless things have changed, my understanding has always been that the capacity of Wembley in athletics mode would not be big enough for Olympic requirements.

Not only that, but the post-Games plans for the stadium allow us to create a new national stadium for athletics. The nearest we have to that at the moment, Crystal Palace, would need substantial investment to bring it up to scratch and I wouldn't be at all surprised if the state of Crystal Palace was preventing the elevation of that otherwise highly prestigious meeting to Golden League status.

While I have had, have expressed, and still have concerns over the post-Games plan for the stadium, that's what we're going to have so we'd better get used to it. And personally speaking, I would rather have this than simply giving it over to something else, such as football.

Some fantastic pictures there. The lightness of this venue, surrounded by parkland and water is beuatiful and in my opinion will prove a breath of fresh air after the monolithic structures we'll see at this year's Games (impressive though they are). It mightn't be an architectural marvel like Beijing's stadium but there is something intrinsically beuatiful in the simplicity of this structure. I said on here more than a year before we won the bid that I hoped the Olympic Park would be like Wimbledon on a grand scale i.e. as much about the park, the environment and the atmosphere as the architecture. These renderings are exactly what I was hoping to see; faublous!

I have to admit, the stadiums looking great in situ. The pod idea really is coming to life as well, its a great idea and can tie all the venues together to make a cohesive looking scheme even though the venues may look very different themselves. I think they are doing a grand job, Im getting too excited, still 4 years to go

I feel exactly the same. London does not need to compete with Beijing. The London games will be unique and the latest rendering show me that LOCOG is doing all the right things at the moment. I had hoped for an English garden effect with the venues blending with the environment. I couldn't be more happy with what I have seen recently. It really will look very beautiful when finished. I am started to feel much more positive now.
