LA84
Um..Barren? reality Check! the Games were scandalous.........member? SALT LAKE OLYMPIPC SCANDAL? Can you hear me now? (Virizon) First off, it is hard to take anyone seriously that can't even spell "Verizon" correctly. Or "Baron." Secondly, those games, except for possibly Calgary, were probably the most successful Winter Games. And Thirdly, WE (being the U.S.) are the ones who exposed what was going on. Not Lillehammer, not Seoul, not Nagano not Sydney or even Atlanta. The only scandal going on was within the IOC. The countries were just playing along. The "scandal" was about the IOC, not Salt Lake. It just got exposed during SLC. Now don't make me come back here again.
Ruling Czar
Um......like.......who are U? I don't think that you should internalize the fact that Chicago won't win the 2016 race because the world is just too fatigued right now with seeing the games return to the US. A lot of people are very pleased that Rio is bidding because it sort of corrects the lie that the US is the only country in the western hemisphere that can host a summer games. Many americans (god bless em) don't realize that Bush has obliterarted the image of america around the world and it just doesn't seem to get better unless Obama becomes president. Add to that the terror attack and logic faux paus that were the hallmark of the Atlanta Olympics, that mammoth ( tusks, fur and all) scandal of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympics, the unprecedented disgrace of Marion Jones and a whole host of former american star athletes who are sore losers, the almost inconceivable scope of cheating that defines modern american sport, the hopeless global instability caused by the american led iraq war, the inability of the very best of american technological warfare to simply locate an injured and aged terrorist and the "duh.......how do you boil water?" image that americans have now. LA84
I started to read this Ruling Czar's post but all of the misspellings, bad grammar and it's continuation of not spelling "Baron" correctly made me loose interest quickly. So now run along back your sandbox and try to be relevant there. Come back when you finish 5th grade or whatever.
NY20??
Eh, I guess I support Chicago 2016. Despite that if it's successful it'll push back any bid from NY at least 15-20 years. Whatever. Following bid races always seemed so 'meh' to me when compared to looking forward to upcoming Games.

james
No doubt Chicago is a good bid but we have had enough of the USA(the world greatest country) so, anything coming to us from there is not a new thing. That been said, it doesn't have a third world ingredient to add to the games which hasn't been applied to the games since inception.
baron-pierreIV
it doesn't have a third world ingredient to add to the games which hasn't been applied to the games since inception. well, james, there was Mexico 1968 and Seoul 1988. Mexico at the time was considered a developing -- or 3rd world country; and South Korea was just emerging as a 'have' nation. So that's been done. The Games are too big, too complex and too risky to try experimenting for the sake of 'newness.'

kilmainham
Does anyone know why Chicago 2016 even needs to build a new Olympic Stadium? Can Soldier Field be used? I know Soldier Field was recently redone and downsized, but wouldn't it be cheaper to redo Soldier Field again. It's location would be perfect...right next to the Olympic Village. I know Soldier Field was recently redone and downsized, but wouldn't it be cheaper to redo Soldier Field again. It's location would be perfect...right next to the Olympic Village. I am not a Chicagoan, but I believe for many reasons: - There are contracts in place. It's an existing NFL venue and home for one of its teams. Where would you send the Bears? And after the Games, you would have to renovate the new facility again entirely? Wouldn't make much fiscal sense. - a track w/ an NFL field just doesn't work. Why do you think the LA Coliseum has not found an NFL tenant? - Economics. The temporary Washington Park stadium is budgeted at what? Around $350 million. To tear down Soldier Field and build a brand new stadium would cost probably $1.2. - 1.3 billion. So that's why.
Soaring
Although newly renovated, Soldier Field is definitely not equipped to be the Olympic Stadium. It is the smallest NFL stadium in the country with a capacity of 61,500. They would need to add roughly 25,000 seats and build an "elevated" field to accommodate track and field. I was very disheartened by the exterior design as well. Inside is nice and cozy though. Washington Park (merely 10 minutes away from the OV) is a fine spot, but Soldier Field has the perfect location for a skyline backdrop for the ceremonies and it is so close to the lake. If the renovation was held off by 8 years or so, then I am sure a new renovation would have revolved around an Olympic stadium design.
