Kenadian
"Athletes and officials of the XV Olympic Winter Games, Calgary bids you welcome!" And so it began, 20 years ago this week. The Calgary Olympics opened on Saturday, February 13, 1988 - exactly 20 years from this coming Wednesday. Where does the time go! These Games witnessed many firsts...and lasts. First to have an indoor speed skating oval, first to be 16 days, first to give away 5 gold medals on the slopes and first Winter Olympics in Canada. And they were the last Winter Games appearances of the mighty USSR and GDR. They also turned in a sizable profit and forever changed Canada's fortunes at the Winter Olympics. They were the Games of great figure skating with battling Brians and Carmens and perfect unison from G&G and B&B. They were also the Games of Tomba la Bomba and of Nykanen, a different kind of "Flying Finn". Also a "Flying Dutchwoman" - Yvonne van Gennip - and a blazing American - Bonnie Blair. They gave us Eddie the Eagle and the cooling running Jamaican bobsled team. Dan Jansen's double falls broke our hearts, but Liz Manley's triple lutz brought us to our feet. Yes, Calgary gave us many great moments in sport! Let's think back at Calgary...the XV Olympic Winter Games...on its 20th Anniversary.

pinfvr
Oh, I remember being at the Calgary games. It was fantastic. We attended Opening Ceremonies and sat at the end of the Stadium near the Athletes. I was so bummed though, because my camera broke in the middle of Opening Ceremonies. There were 3 Kodak photographers sitting in front of us, and one of them tried to fix my camera but was unable to. We saw Eddie the Eagle, Bobsled, Luge and 2 Hockey games, and did lots of pin trading. It was a very memorable experience.
Guardian
What a party at the COP. And, on the news that the Olympic venues then have already got upgrades or getting the funding needed for their projects.
