monorail
Can we come up with a master list of all the interested cities for 2020??? Have any cities announced their intentions for bidding for these Olympics yet? I'm sure there are many users on this board who are well informed or have some type of idea which cities are interested in getting these games. cfm Jeremie
Let's see. Have officially made noise about bidding for 2020: Prague Istanbul Roma Berlin Busan Obviously Berlin will depend on the outcome of Munich 2018 bid just like Busan would depend on whether PC does bid for 2018. dave199
According to Wikipedia, these are the interested cities so far for 2020. It's Wikipedia though so I wouldn't take every city mentioned seriously. Potential bids Africa Cape Town, South Africa After being eliminated during the fourth round of the 2004 Olympic race, Cape Town may also bid for the 2020 Olympics.[1] Prominent IOC members including Dick Pound have suggested that the organization should give the Games to an African nation.[2] This is supported by a comment made by IOC President Jacques Rogge concerning the Cape Town bid for the 2004 Olympics, which were awarded to Athens). Rogge said that he wanted to give the games to Cape Town, and told them to keep trying. The Cape Chamber of Commerce has indicated that Cape Town intends to bid for the 2020 Games. The 2010 FIFA World Cup could work in Cape Town's advantage, since it would provide major upgrade of sports, transport and other infrastructure. Cape Town has gained much experience over the last ten years through hosting numerous major events for sports such as cycling, fencing, table tennis, hockey, cross country, athletics, beach volleyball and various others. Asia Busan, South Korea With the success of the 2002 Asian Games held in Busan, the city's mayor announced on November 14, 2005 to the Korean news agency Yonhap that they were planning to bid for the 2020 Olympic games. The official bid was made during the 17th APEC forum held on November 18 and 19 in Busan.[3] Delhi, India Being very confident of holding a successful Commonwealth Games in 2010, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has confirmed that "Delhi will bid for the 2020 Olympics."[4] The IOA had decided to bid for the 2016 games but after a failed attempt to host the 2014 Asian Games it will now bid for the 2020 games, officials confirmed. Other international sporting events that will be held in India include the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, the 4th World Military Games 2007 and the soon to be announced F1 Delhi Grand Prix in 2009/2010. Both London and Sydney have offered support to back a Delhi bid.[5] Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Malaysia expects to be considered a developed nation by the year 2020, as expressed in Wawasan 2020. There is slight expectation from the public for the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur to host the Summer Olympics to mark Wawasan 2020.[6] Kuala Lumpur had decided to bid for the 2008 Games but it did not succeed in becoming a candidate on the shortlist.[7] The city had hosted several large athletic competitions such as the 1998 Commonwealth Games. Bangkok, Thailand The Thai capital, Bangkok, had originally expressed interest for bidding for the right to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games[8], but instead decided to bid for the 2010 Youth Olympics.[9] If Bangkok fails to gain the host city status for the 2010 games, it is specualted that the city could bid to host the 2020 Olympics. Similarly, if it were to host a successful Youth Olympics, then this may be an advantage in the potential applicancy. Bangkok does have a certain degree of bidding experience in the standard Olympics also, as it bid to host the 2008 Summer Olympics[10], but was not selected as an applicant city. Bangkok has hosted the Asian Games 4 times, most recently in 1998. As Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok's location is a slight advantage over any other bids, as an Olympic Games has never before been held in Southeast Asia. Bangkok's prominence in the region and the fact that it is well-known worldwide make it an obvious choice for applicancy; it's large population, booming economy (Bangkok has the third-fastest growing economy in Asia according to the 2010 bid website) and amount of potential accommodation in place (the capital has many luxury hotels and has the most restaurants per sq kilometre in the world) all count in its favour. Hiroshima, Japan – Manila, Philippines The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) has expressed interest in securing the rights for the 2018 Asian Games and will try to bid together with the Japanese City of Hiroshima for the 2020 and 2024 Olympic Games.[11] Manila never hosted an Olympiad before while Japan hosted the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo. Manila was the site of the 2nd Asian Games in 1954[12], and had hosted the Southeast Asian Games in 1981, 1991 and 2005. It also hosted the FIBA World Championships in 1978, and the World Pool Championships in 2006 and 2007. To boost its bid, the Philippines plans to construct a bigger and better stadium in the Pasay Reclamation Area, and other temporary and permanent sports facilities. Meanwhile, Hiroshima was the host of the 1994 Asian Games, the first time the quadrennial meet was held outside a capital city, and co-hosted the 2006 FIBA World Championships. Taipei, Chinese Taipei Taiwanese Premier Frank Hsieh announced that Chinese Taipei is considering to place a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games.[13] This came in view of Taiwan's success in securing the rights for the 2009 World Games. However, since China is claiming Taiwan as a "renegade province", Taipei would have to contend China's opposition regarding this plan. Taiwan is also poised to bid first for the Asian Games or the World University Games before putting up an Olympic bid. Europe Budapest, Hungary Budapest is considering to bid for Hungary's first Summer Olympic Games. [14] Copenhagen, Denmark Copenhagen is considering to bid for Denmark's first Olympics. In a report by Rambøll Management it is said that Copenhagen will try to bid for the Olympics in 2020 because they concluded that it would be the most likely year that a European nation would win the bid.[15] Copenhagen already has excellent infrastructure and only little upgrades would be necessary. [16] Denmark has created a group whose purpose is to attract big events to their nation, which would increase the possibility of getting the Olympics. Denmark may be attempting to hold the World Championship in table tennis in 2010, World Cycling Championship in 2011, European Football Championship (together with Sweden) in 2016 and European Championships in Athletics in 2018. [17] Hamburg, Germany The Hamburg sports league (HSB) met with the German Olympic sports league to present an application at a meeting in December 2007. [18] The HSB president claims his city is the most compact and has the best chance to host the Olympics. However, Munich is mounting a bid for the 2018 Winter Games bid, which will supersede a 2020 Summer games bid,[19] and most likely push a Hamburg bid back to at least 2030.[20] Istanbul, Turkey Istanbul will apply for hosting the 2020 Olympic Games. Istanbul previously applied for hosting the games in 4 consecutive times but did not apply for 2016 Olympic Games. [21] Prague, Czech Republic Mayor of Prague, Pavel Bém, has organized a team to assess whether Prague could win a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games. Its estimated cost for preparations for an Olympic bid, including a proposal to connect the metro system to sports centres and to enlarge an airport, would be USD$9.1 billion. Also, most of the sport grounds must be built. More information www.olympic.cz or www.idnes.cz [22]. Rome, Italy After losing its 2004 bid to Athens, Rome will attempt to present a stronger bid for the 2020 Olympics. Walter Veltroni, mayor of Rome, will be supporting a Rome 2020 bid. Following the win of Sochi for the 2014 Winter Olympics, an Italian bid has been confirmed from prospects of the Olympic Games returning to Europe again.[23] St. Petersburg, Russia Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, is considering bidding for the 2020 Summer Olympics. City officials have confirmed that they are preparing to develop the city's infrastructure to strengthen their bid.[24] However, as Russia won the right to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, this may play a factor in the IOC's decision. The last time Russia hosted a Summer Games was the 1980 Summer Olympics, then part of the Soviet Union. A bid by St. Petersburg for the 2020 Games would be the first Summer Olympics for the nation as a post-Soviet Russian Federation. North America Boston, United States Boston is conducting feasibility studies for the greater New England region.[25] Minneapolis-St. Paul, United States Legislation has been introduced in the Minnesota Legislature to create a task force to explore a 2020 Olympic bid for the Twin Cities.[26] Houston, Texas, United States Expected to replace Chicago as the United States' 3rd most populous city by 2020, and having been spurned by the USOC for the 2012 summer games, Houston is expected to emerge as a possible contender for the US bid. Monterrey, Mexico Monterrey is considering a 2020 Summer Olympic bid, according to Felipe Muñoz, President of the Mexican Olympic Committee. [27] Philadelphia, United States There is also speculation that Philadelphia is interested in bidding for the 2020 games. Joseph M. Torsella, head of Philadelphia Sports Congress, has stated he is interested in hosting the 2020 or 2024 Olympic Games in an interview in the local Philadelphia Daily News. [28] Toronto, Canada On July 10, 2007 it was revealed that the Canadian Olympic Committee had begun work on a potential bid for the 2020 or 2024 games for Toronto, the capital of Ontario and largest city in Canada.[29] This would be Toronto's third bid for the summer Olympic games, after unsuccessful bids for the 1996 and 2008 games. The success of a 2020 bid from Toronto depends on the circumstances of Chicago winning the 2016 Games, as the IOC is very reluctant in awarding the Olympic Games to the same continent consecutively and to another Great Lakes city.[30] If Chicago does not succeed in the 2016 bid, this would give Toronto a winning edge in bidding to be host of the XXXII Olympics. As well, Chicago's loss would mean that by 2020, it would have been 24 years since a summer Olympics were held in North America, the previous of which were the 1996 Games in Atlanta. South America Rio de Janeiro, Brazil If the Rio bid for the 2016 Summer Olympics is unsuccessful, the city may try again, especially seeing as the IOC wills the games to go to a city in a region of the world where the Olympics have not been before held - the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa and in this case South America. Buenos Aires, Argentina In 2006, representatives of the Argentinian government met with Jacques Rogge to state Argentina's wish to bid for an Olympics.[31] Whilst the city of Buenos Aries, the most likely Argentine candidate, did not bid for the 2016 games, there is much speculation over a possible 2020 or 2024 bid. Oceania Brisbane, Australia The subtropical city of Brisbane would seriously consider bidding for the Olympic Games in 2020 or 2024[32], former Queensland Premier Peter Beattie has said. His announcement came after IOC President Jacques Rogge said the IOC would love to see a bid from Brisbane in the future. Australia had also previously hosted the 1956 Summer Games in Melbourne and the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney. In 1985, Brisbane failed to win the bid for the 1992 Summer Olympics, which were held in Barcelona. However, Brisbane has experience in hosting major international sporting events, having hosted the 1982 Commonwealth Games and the 2001 Goodwill Games. Melbourne, Australia Australia's second largest city, Melbourne is considering a bid for the 2020 Olympic Games. Ron Walker indicated on the night that Melbourne won the 2006 Commonwealth Games that it would bid for the 2020 Olympics. Melbourne has also had much experience hosting the 1956 Olympic Games, 2006 Commonwealth Games, the FINA World Championships in 2007.
baron-pierreIV
Jeez, there's already another thread on the exact same subject in the first General 2016 Summer Olympic folder: http://www.gamesbids.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=8104 Also, Dave199, that Wikepedia article is a joke. It forgot Tokyo and Madrid. And those other US cities -- all has-beens in the 2016 race.

cube
i think 2020 could become the most open race for the SOG ever especially when Chicago get the 2016 SOG Chicago 2016 would just rule out Canada and the USA i think we would see a lot Major-Europe cities bidding, and a lot of Asian cities even a Munich or Pyeonchang 2018 WOG wouldn´t rule out Europe or Aisa for 2020 so it will be wide open and really interesting

Kenadian
Depends on where 2016 goes - although I think Tokyo, Rio, and Chicago are the ones to watch in that race. Any win will eliminate the hopes of their national and continental cohorts, but a loss will keep things open. I suspect the USOC will keep Chicago for one more round if they don't win and if they keep it a close race. If Chicago fails to make an impression bigger than NYC 2012, then they could open up the field for another US city. I think Europe will easily be in the hunt. So too will South Africa. My feeling, though, is that Cape Town is the very early favourite.
FYI
Still way too early to answer this question. Perhaps the best guess at this time, is that Europe would be a good bet for 2020 (considering 2016 is very likely not heading their way). Unless Munich lands 2018, then that puts a spin on things yet again.

XD A year or two ago, someone discovered there was an entry for GamesBids on Wikipedia. worldracer
I edit on Wikipedia sometimes. You can't use sources such as this discussion site as references, but I will occasionally put something on from the newsfeed. As for Baron's assertion that the article sucks, well, all the article does is report stories from the news. I wouldn't trust entries on the list that aren't sourced. dave199
The lineup for 2020 looks to be impressive. If Tokyo wins 2016, the lineup for the 2020 will be stacked!!! Even if Tokyo doesn't win, this year still will be shining. You would have bids from: Chicago, USA or New York City, USA Toronto, Canada Monterrey, Mexico Rio de Janeiro, Brazil Cape Town, South Africa Rome, Italy Paris, France Madrid, Spain Berlin, Germany Prague, Czech Republic Other cities that could get into the mix: Buenos Aires, Argentina St.Petersburg, Russia Melbourne, Australia Istanbul, Turkey Budapest, Hungary Busan, South Korea Dehli, India Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Could this year possibly outdo the race of 2012? Nairobi(familiarization bid) 4. Cairo (familiarization bid) 5. Casablanca(familiarization bid) These cities are growing in strength to host theses games one day in the near future.
