Lionel Messi hits the corner Pepsi vending machine with a bag of Lay's Classic potato chips to wash them down, unbeknownst to him an old man sitting in the chair likes to be stealth involving food and drink. This commercial obviously has no dialogue for it can be televised worldwide with little ease. But there's no sign of any sign of "football" save for superstar Messi himself. Never mind he doesn't speak much English either

In one of the numerous 2014 FIFA World Cup-related commercials around the world, we see Neymar, who can't speak any German and thus have no lines, and Thomas Muller getting involved in an impromptu round of kicking around and heading the soccer with kids and strangers random square at a (unnamed) Brazilian city square only to have the fun stopped momentarily when the ball gets stuck in a German World Cup-themed commercial promoting the Volkwagen Tiguan and Golf Cup editions. Pele chuckles driving by in his at that scene in a cameo. Shame about the brutal final score that wasn't competitive in Belo Horizonte at the semis--Neymar wasn't involved due to his injury of course. We didn't get to this while talking about the World Cup last year:

For years until perestroika and glastnost, I though Soviet TV as a state-owned and controlled entity would NEVER allow advertising on either radio and TV. It later did in those years like with Pepsi, notably. Except for Estonis, due to its close proximity towards Finland whose YLE and private channels allowed commercials and sent its signals to Estonia. Turns out by going through YouTube that there actually was advertising and commercials even during the late 1970s and early 1980s, like this Sokol-404 Moscow 1980 special edition two-band radio model that has staged scenes of athletes like the Dynamo Moscow basketball team, a Soviet pole vaulter, female Soviet swimmers, sprinters, and divers. Of course, Sokol was state-owned too and the advertising was also designed to alert viewers they can get items like this at state-owned stores.

New Zealand's colorful Barcelona 1992-inspired M&M's TV commercial shown down there, especially on TVNZ One. Seems to me it was made to be shown worldwide and the filmed faux action took place not in Barcelona and certainly not in NZ. Maybe in the USA and just incorporate the NZOC flag. Kinda catchy with the rhythm and presentation and quickly reminds me of that 1984 M&M's commercial but without the animation. Similar music and style was popular in this era.

Today starts the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup up in Canada in Edmonton, Alberta's Commonwealth Stadium that was served as the longtime home of Canada Soccer teams until the opening of Toronto's BMO Field. It will no doubt be the much-needed respite from the sleeziness and ugliness and the sometimes hilarious corruption we're witnessing the past two weeks from FIFA for us soccer fans worldwide. All starts with Canada versus China and later New Zealand vs. the Netherlands all in Edmonton. All games in Canada are on CTV and TSN (and RDS in French). To kick things off with this thread, we'll start with two commercials featuring the hosts Canadian women that are now turning into rock stars to many Canadian soccer fans and some casual ones there in getting the word out about them and the tournament, becoming household names. Since 2012 under the likeable John Herdman's leadership, things are falling their way in a positive manner since claiming bronze in Coventry, England during London 2012. For Canadians this is like what 1999 was south of the border. Remains to be seen if Team Canada/Big Red can arrive in glory.

First we got Canadian world class goal-scoring machine and taliswomen Christine Sinclair from Burnaby, BC decked in her 2015 Canada WWC jersey in a Coca-Cola commercial that's hitting the Canadian TV airwaves in recent weeks and months as we get closer to the event and promote the stars in it. The Canadian flagbearer at the London 2012 closing ceremony for her boss-like hat trick performance in that legendary and controversial semifinal game at Manchester's Old Trafford against the USA. She's playing a soccer video game with a girlfriend and she inserts himself as a sub to become the game--and goal--changer in the game. Again, like a boss here. Not only that some of her friends on the Canadian like Diana Matheson and Karina LeBlanc also sub in. Of course sharing a Coke. On a related note, coming in FIFA 16 you will play Sinclair and Co. as Canada in the upcoming installment for the first time along with 11 other women's national teams. A much welcome and positive addition!

Diana Matheson, Erin McLeod, and Rhian Wilkinson, proudly sporting their then-freshly minted Olympic bronze and gold CONCACAF medals and Canada Soccer jerseys, promote Bank of Montreal's Team of The Soccer for teams with ages 7-12 that would win C$125,000 to refurbrish their soccer fields just by uploading their video explains they're deserving for that honor. The winning team got revealed on TSN's MLS Game of the Week on September 2013 with the nomination deadline coming on July 12, 2013. BMO is a strong supporter for not just Canada Soccer but for MLS' Canadian contingent in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. It was Matheson who scored the late goal at Coventry's Ricoh Stadium against France for bronze to give Canada its first Summer Olympic medal in a team sports since the Canadian men's basketball team got silver in the sport's 1936 Olympic debut and ended the lingering misery following the US game. Also capturing the hearts of Canadian sports fans. I'll find out who the winner was later on.

We're only underway in Team USA's 2015 FIFA WWC debut tonight in Winnipeg, Manitoba against Australia's Matildas in group play up in Canada. By far, they are the most marketed group of women's soccer players in this WWC and for decades like with great players from mid 1990s to early 2000s. Especially with this generation of players right now, many of whom on are already successful Olympians, where there's so many of these commercials starring them to be seen on YouTube in recent years. To commemorate this, we're going to start this off in the Americans of the bunch with good friends Alex Morgan and Abby Wambach. Don't worry, we'll get to the likes of Hope Solo very soon on this thread, among others. Alex's go so many commercials here on YouTube that it was hard for me to select which one to start off with. So I decided to go with a Degree deodorant commercial the photogetic goal scoring star stars in that sees here conducting typical soccer practice drills at the Home Depot Center in Carson City, California before paddleboarding out on the ocean as an example of its "do more" slogan along with showing what they're primarily known for. Those outside the USA and Canada like in Europe will recognize Degree, a sponsor of US Soccer, and its stylized check symbol under the Rexona brand

Now we get to Alex's dear friend and mentor Abby, who's now seen since the infamous aforementioned USA-Canada Olympic soccer semifinal in Manchester as the bitter enemy of the Canadian soccer state, and her very intense and intimidating Gatorade commercial from 2011, when the team was wearing the so-called "hot nurse" navy jerseys from back then. You can hear her thoughts on her opponent defending her, staring her down describing how weak she is when drinking water to replenish herself and "easy to break" in her fatigue. Borderline psychotic. Almost stalking. But again, it's meant to convey the intensity she always brings in her relentless scoring. Then Abby scores against her after consuming the Gatorade G2, needless to say. When I first saw that screenshot of her eye with the camera gradually zooming in, I almost thought of a hulk out thinking that her eyes would turn green like in that 2003 Hulk movie teaser trailer. Rare for a huge capacity stadium to be filled for women's soccer like this here. But this is a commercial, so it wasn't really filled that much during filming.

Now USWNT ladies, about that chokejob four years ago in Frankfurt...:angry:

Indeed they were. And I enjoy them a lot. Unlike our promos on NBC and going back earlier to ABC, ours focus on the athletes. Nothing wrong with that. Keep it going. But I would like to see NBC for the Rio 2016 promos put in some diversity in their looks/presentation like also emphasizing the venues and the programming blocks that we see in the Seven 2000 Olympic promos for one of the promos. Like to emphasize Brazil and Rio for them? Cool, too.

OK, back to the WWC-theme here with the US women--get your damn act together, ladies!--about to play China's Steel Roses tonight in Ottawa, Ontario. Still on the lookout for others and more contemporary ones. And will get them. But I'd like to get a little throwback with this one from 1998-2000 when the American women were the undisputed queens on the pitch and became mainstream stars--and were from a REAL team (until proven otherwise this year, if needed)! Stars 3x Olympians and gold medalists Julie Foudy and Brandi Chastain in a very funny kitschy 70s buddy cop drama-inspired Bud Light TV commercial fighting criminals when not playing soccer complete with 70s music in all ala Starsky & Hutch called Foudy & Chastain. Instead of guns, they use soccer balls to apprehend the bad guys. They indeed were real bad mammas!

Back in 2003, China and the USA, both still global women's soccer powerhouses after the memorable last edition in 1999, got together somehow in an Adidas ad set in the People's Republic of China as a way of promoting what would have been China hosting that year's edition. Of course, it eventually couldn't because of SARS but was awarded the next one, when the Chinese women's soccer program was badly deteriorating with its class of players and several players having since retired. So the USA repeated as hosts that year on short notice. Anyway with no dialouge, the premise is this: Americans Kristine Lilly and Aly Wagner, among others, are woken up at their dorm-like apartment one morning like it was a light earthquake with a rumble on the glass of water. They and other women's soccer players go outside and discover the Chinese women's team--aka the Steel Roses--led by legend Sun Wen engaging in disciplined, synchronized martial arts drills with soccer balls (wushu? tai chi?) and kicking them onto the building and handling them with such precision as a way of intimidating the Americans and all other foriegn players in China. Needless to say, the foreigners here aren't impressed until Sun gives them the ball in a symbol of challenge. Adidas outfitted the Chinese FA until a couple of years ago when Nike since took over.

Another newly-minted US Women's World Cup star in Kelley O'Hara from Georgia (though she's actually a veteran on the USWNT since 2010 and currently playing for Sky Blue FC). In one of those now-typical black and white except for the product it's promoting TV commercials, Kelley's out on her jog until a soccer ball from a nearby guys' pickup game comes her way. You can imagine what happens next past those a couple among them who happen to resemble Lionel Messi and Thierry Henry there (Was that part of the idea?) when fueled by chocolate milk. Now, I never enjoyed chocolate milk immediately after a workout or exercize to relax the muscles from lactic acid, though I do enjoy it very much. So I never experienced the reported benefits yet...

The BBC did an excellent job of setting the right tone for the Games and building up a sense of anticipation.

Spanish basketball star and 2008 Olympian (aiming for another one in Rio) Ricky Rubio from the Minnesota Timberwolves impresses his buddy at the court so much with his amazing underhand basket his friend buys him a McDonald's McChicken sandwich for a euro that's part of the Euro Menu items

Back in the early 1980s when the great Mary T. Meagher ruled the swimming pool in the face of those tough East Germans, rumoured at the time to be doping since confirmed, and the Australians and occasional those from random nations. She certainly was one American it can hang their hat on to since she was so good. Philipps 66 thought of her so highly around 1983-84 that she was used as the poster child for their US Swimming sponsorship. Surely there are those of you on this forum who haven't since this in a long time or likely didn't know it. It was right around the time swimming was starting to become gradually professionalized

1999 Women's World Cup hero and 3x Olympic star Brandi Chastain plays fossball--and apparently knows the game so well sporting her Nike US Soccer jersey--with then-fellow Nike mate and 2000 US Olympian Kevin Garnett (now with Chinese brand Anta via AND1 and Adidas) and a couple of his Old Block Family posse. She gets a little cocky with it after scoring that leads to a pregnant, akward pause in this 2000 Nike commercial

I have been a major fan of Samsung's electronics in recent years from tablets to washing machines and dryers to smartphones. It really stepped up its game. Fan here of those Galaxy S6s. Following Samsung commercial from last year is intended to encourage South Koreans to buy Samsung Curved UHD TVs in time for Hong Myung-Bo's South Korea's Tigers in what became an ill-fated 2014 World Cup campaign that can also be voiced activated through smartphone through voice or smart watches. As Hyung, a former playing star with the national teams in his coaching debut at any level, leads his charge here with adoring red-clad fans, he gets support from fellow South Korean sports stars and Samsung endorsers figure skater Kim Yu-Na, speed skater Lee Sang-Hwa, and swimmer Park Tae-Hwan cheering him and his team on TV. though, as indicated here, it wasn't like 2002...

And don't forget the Galaxy Pro 12.2 tablets

David Robinson in his anti-drug abuse PSA presented by the NCAA back in his Navy days, where he remains one of the precious few sports superstars there, circa 1985-1986. This presages his two Nike Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood anti-drug ones he later did in the early 1990s like the "stoopid" one with his Seoul 1988 USA basketball Olympic (and Georgetown Hoyas) coach John Thompson and his wife, when it slammed not only taking drugs but also dropping out of school as such:

German handball legend, Athens silver medalist, announcer for the upcoming Handball 16 video game, and one-time famous boyfriend of Franziska Van Almsick Stefan Kretzchmar enjoying a daily jog in the woods and sharing a soda with his (fictional TV) daughter after both open their bottles at the edge of the table before dining at his Massivum-furnished dining room for this Massivum spot. Spike Lee (as himself and not his Mars Blackmon in those Jordan ads) heckles his Indiana Pacers nemesis and 1996 Atlanta Olympian Reggie Miller three years after the famous heckling in New York's MSG at Indianapolis' old Market Square Arena while both having fun and promoting Nike Air basketball shoes for this 1997 Finish Line commercial. Reggie says no lines in this:

Following is the Nike US Olympics 1984 takeoff version of Randy Newman's sunny popular video hit back then "I Love L.A." as the tie-in to the then-upcoming Los Angeles Olympics that summer (and during ABC's broadcast). Despite the arguably satirical nature of the song, this features Mary Decker, Alberto Salazar, Carl Lewis, Edwin Moses, John McEnroe, Moses Malone, members of the Los Angeles Raiders, and I think Pedro Guerrero. Trivia: Randy Newman's "I Love L.A." video was the first and last one aired on Ted Turner's rare misfire the Cable Music Channel (intended to rival MTV back then) later that fall and was sometimes used for network IDs and commercial promos soundtracks:

I also like this one, It's about the Nigerian Women's 4x100 Relay Team that won Bronze in Barcelona and showed more joy than the US who won Gold -

The Mitsubishi Magna TJ was on the verge of ending its shelflife in 2003. Later that year, Mitsubishi unleashed the first Australian-built all-wheel drive car in the Magna TL form. And who better person to describe its capabilities driving it through the forest and snow area--may have been filmed through the Snowy Mountains but very likely in Europe (note the license plate)--than Steven Bradbury, Australia's first Winter Olympic gold medalist, behind the wheel and still reaping the rewards of that historic achievement in 2002 in this 2003 commercial?

Bradesco Seguros, the Brazilian banking and financial giant and major sponsor of the Rio Olympics plus a longtime supporter of the Brazilian Olympic Committee, has always showed some Olympic love in their commercial. For the upcoming Rio Olympics, it's no different. In fact, it's ramped up that much in its backyard while being a big sponsor to Globo's Olympic coverage.

Bradesco's commercial here is all about preparing for those game and in support of Team Brazil at home in Rio--be it swimming, basketball, and judo--and preparing for everything else like life changes out there in daily life:

More and purely explicit in its support for the BRA during Rio's Olympics and Paralympics in various sports in all of its commercials so far in years past, equipped with a rock score. All indicating "things may get hot" for the Brazil's favor:
