ghost1 Posted January 22, 2008 Report Posted January 22, 2008 The Bulgarian NOC is considering a bid with Sofia for the 2012 Winter YOG: Link (only in bulgarian) it says: Същевременно БОК обмисля вариант София да се кандидатира за първите зимни олимпийски младежки игри за през 2012-а. BOC is considering the option for Sofia to bid for the first Winter Youth Olympic Games in 2012."The venues aren't that expensive and a good reception could raise our rating for a real Olympics", said the head of the NOc, Stefka Kostadinova. I think that if Sofia bids for the 2012 Winter YOG, this bid will have better chances than the 2014 Winter OG one. Sofia has Vitosha mountain 20 minutes from the city centre and although Vitosha wouldn't be able to accomodate all the sport venues for an Olympic Games at this stage, the existing facilities would be suitable for an YOG. Moreover there are numerous sport venues existing in Sofia for all the ice disciplines so that there won't be much new construction, a guideline by the IOC. What do you think of the chances of such bid?
worldracer Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Depends. How far would they have to go for other events in the mountains? It seemed like the IOC put a lot of weight on having the Games compact in the 1st YSOG. (They were specific criticisms for Athens and Bangkok, I remember). I also know that Sofia has gotten lowish scores on other bids. Was it a infrastructure/accommodation issue?
ghost1 Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 The distances will be the main difference between the Olympic Games bid and the Youth Games bid, if the BOC chooses Vitosha mountain as the venue for the alpine and nordic sports (and they have already stated they will). Vitosha is a 2300m high mountain 10km drive from Sofia. It can't handle all the WOG venues, that's why they went with Bansko and Borovetz. But Vitosha is suitable for an YOG as it was venue for both University Winter Games in Sofia (1983 and 1989). So geographical dispersion wouldn't be a factor this time around. This is a map from the '92 bid. You can see the mountain and the city lying below it:
worldracer Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 That's good, then! I know they have had lots of experience with the Universiades. I think it's time the Games returned to the region. Good luck with the bid!
ghost1 Posted February 14, 2008 Author Report Posted February 14, 2008 Do you think Sofia should bid for the 2012 YOG or wait and bid for the 2018 WOG or do both (if it doesn't win the right to host the first one)?
Sir Rols Posted February 14, 2008 Report Posted February 14, 2008 Do you think Sofia should bid for the 2012 YOG or wait and bid for the 2018 WOG or do both (if it doesn't win the right to host the first one)? Go for the 2012 YOGs, for sure. Honestly, I think Sochi is a bit too close for Bulgaria to have much chance for 2018.
baron-pierreIV Posted February 15, 2008 Report Posted February 15, 2008 Go for the 2012 YOGs, for sure.Honestly, I think Sochi is a bit too close for Bulgaria to have much chance for 2018. Exactly, the SA phenomenon proves that: 1948 - SAint Moritz 1972 - SApporo 1984 - SArajevo 2002 - SAlt Lake City SO, SOchi 2014 and SOfia 2018 ain't gonna happen.
baron-pierreIV Posted February 17, 2008 Report Posted February 17, 2008 SAntiago would definitely have a chance in the future.
Lord David Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 And what about Salzburg? Always to end up 3rd place?
baron-pierreIV Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 And what about Salzburg? Always to end up 3rd place? well, because another town in Austria's already hosted twice, Innsbruck -- to SAlzburg's detriment.
FYI Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Besides the "SO" factor, Sochi & Sofia wouldn't happen anyway. There's no way consecutive Eastern European WOG's are going to happen. It took 20 years for Eastern Europe to win a second winter games, so it'll be *at least* another 12 years after Sochi for E.E. to get a third one.
FYI Posted February 18, 2008 Report Posted February 18, 2008 Pardon, make that 29 years to win a second WOG's, so at least another 20 years after Sochi for a third games.
ghost1 Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 Singapore winning the 2010 YOG is good news for Sofia 2012
worldracer Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 Agreed. Same "level" of city, new continent. Doubtless the IOC is eager to hold the Games in Europe. Any Asian bids for WYOG are likely to be dismissed. I believe I read that the US won't bid for 2012 so as not to interfere with Chicago 2016. So unless Canada bids (which again may be too soon as they have Vancouver 2012, European bids look very strong. Calling Jaca, Sion, Innsbruck, Salzburg, Sofia, Ostersund, etc...
ghost1 Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 Two major junior events to be held in Bulgaria soon: http://bgolympic.org/cgi-bin/e-cms/vis/vis...n=000107&g= http://www.juniorworlds2008.com/
skicross Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 Don't wait for Jaca... yesterday, a piece of news said that Jaca will forget its olympic aspirations for a while, and the city will try to get other international competitions as FIS events or Hockey and Skating Championships.

Spain is the 9th worst team, behind Belgium and ahead of Iceland. Only countries that are in the top 14 in the world can host the championships Canada, Finland, Russia, Sweden, the US, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Switzerland and Germany the only continual possible hosts, Denmark will probably get the 2013 or 2014 edition because of recent performances but because of the regulation/promotion system it is difficult to get the championships to countries that never face elimination.

I dind't know that... But i remember Jaca hosting Ice Skating World Championships from 1990 to 1998, couldn't Jaca get these events again?
Faster Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 Spain's main problem is lack of competitors, but since the figure skating world championships were suppose to be held in Australia at one point (was moved to Nice) it is entirely possible. Though if Spain wanted to build an infrastructure it would be best to base it around Zaragova.
skicross Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 Yes that's the big problem. At least, this week Jaca and the area are hosting the Junior Alpine World Championship, it seems that little by little things are changing here... Maybe Jaca can get other international events soon. And what you say about Zaragoza is totally true, lets see what happen after the EXPO Zaragoza 2008...
ghost1 Posted August 17, 2008 Author Report Posted August 17, 2008 Jacques Rogge, president of the International Olympic Committee, and the President of Bulgaria Mr. Parvanov met in Beijing this morning and discussed the possible bid of the country for the 2016 Youth Winter Games.
