Scotguy
Well, I'd imagine the Queen (or the King) will be there, so yes. Along with a Scottish Anthem as well.I can't remember, but it must have been played at Manchester 2002. It was played here because it is the national anthem of England. Melbourne 2006 did not want to play it so had a sort of happy birthday, anthem song to compromise. I think it should just be Flower of Scotland played as this is the anthem of the host nation. mattygs
I know for Auckland 1990, the choir did performed *God Defend New Zealand* as the anthem of the host nation. And then the brass did a burst of God Save the Queen instrumentally. I think KL did something similar. In saying that, GSTQ is also an official anthem of New Zealand aswell. Scotguy
I know this story doesnt concern the games but it shows investment into Scottish Sport A significant cash contribution has been made to boost the sport of curling in south west Scotland. Sportscotland has announced investment of more than £200,000 to improve facilities at Lockerbie Ice Rink. It is part of a nationwide funding package which will also see communities in Buckie, Forfar and Cumnock benefit. Sports Minister Stewart Maxwell said it would hopefully "encourage more people to become physically active and, in doing so, become healthier". Lockerbie is the home rink of current European curling champions David Murdoch and Euan Byers.
Scotguy
One of Scotland’s leading business figures has been appointed to a key role in delivering the “best ever Commonwealth Games” in Glasgow in 2014. Sir Robert Smith, Chairman for The Weir Group plc, former CEO of Morgan Grenfell Private Equity and BBC Governor and Chairman for the Broadcasting Council for Scotland has been appointed as Chair of the body tasked with delivering the largest multi-sport event ever to be held in Scotland. First Minister Alex Salmond was speaking at a news conference at Hampden Park earlier today before visiting the construction site of the Toryglen Indoor Training Facility which will be uses as a football facility during the Games. The First Minister, who chairs the Glasgow 2014 Strategic Group which brings together the lead partners of the Scottish Government, Glasgow City Council and Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, said this appointment was a major milestone in the Games delivery process. Mr Salmond said: “I’m delighted to announce the appointment of Sir Robert Smith as the Chair of the Organising Committee of the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. “Sir Robert will bring a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to this hugely important role, as the leading individual responsible for turning Scotland’s Commonwealth Games dream into reality. “He has a proven track record which I know will be essential for delivering an event which promises to be not only the best ever Commonwealth Games but the greatest sporting showcase our country has ever seen. “I’ve been massively impressed by the enthusiasm shown across the length and breadth of Scotland for the Games so far and I’m sure people across the country will join me in wishing Sir Robert the very best of success for the crucial six years ahead.” Michael Cavanagh, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland said: "The Games Council welcomes the appointment of Sir Robert Smith to the Organising Company for the Games. Scotguy
The Scottish Parliament is expected to approve new laws designed to help the organisers of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. The measures will provide the authorities with extra powers for tackling ticket touts, street traders and unauthorised advertising. Glasgow City Council will also be given special powers to control traffic and to purchase land. The legislation is likely to be in place by the end of May. Scotguy
Tickets for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow could cost up to £175. A report from the 2014 team revealed that it would cost between £50 and £175 to attend the ceremonies, with a £5 discounted ticket also available. The report described ticketing as "inclusive" and said prices were comparable or lower than other Games.
jim jones
I commend Scottish parliatment for coming up with such intelligent ideas. I think this will go a long way to make Glasgow 2014 commwealth games be among the best if these are done as said. James The Scots are idiots plain and simple and engaging Clowns here is a waste of time really. Ticket touts Please give me a break . A. the commonwealth games in Manchester and Melbourne could not give tickets away to even have one day of Capacity Crowds and B. if they actually followed the Example of Fifa 2006 Ticket Touts would not have an opportunity Because of RfID imprinted ticketing that encodes the Ticket holders information electronically onto the ticket and cannot be altered. The Technology by 2014 is even going to be better. Rfid is common in premiership league venues and many places world wide for sports events. The Scottish Parliament and the Committee are make something out of absolutely nothing or they are totally ignorant to the technology in place that would be employed . The Pan Am Games in Rio used this technology for their Athletes accreditation and the Olympics are using Rfid for 2008 onwards. 3 million ticket holders held Rfid tickets for the World Cup 2006 in Germany. The World Cup is certainly larger event then a commonwealth games Lol. Yeah Jim Jones seems to Know something that the Super Scots Dont ? My god it is used in some of Scotlands Soccer Stadiums now like Celtic Park and Imbrox LOL. James one of the Largest Printing efforts for Smart ID Card tech in the World occuried in the spring of 2007 . Over 70 million voter id cards were printed and delivered for an election in a 6 week production run . The Company that printed them Chams Nigeria of Lagos, Nigeria for the Nigerian Federal elections of May 2007. I wonder what Scotland used for their elections which had some 10 percent of people not being able to vote LOL. probably scraps of paper like we do in Canada. Nigeria actually is getting ahead of the curve with Rfid having their passports made with it embedded. Considering Glasgow 2014 cant even arrange to get a Banner off an overpass bridge(and that made the pages Glasgow Evening Times) to join them in supporting the games bid) three months after the Bid Decision it shows how disorganized a Glasgow 2014 will be. First minister Melonhead wanting 150 million pounds from the National Lottery for the 2014 games really shows that Scotland does not have the money without Westminister. Yeah I can imagine the closing ceremonies there would be the Scotland separating from the UK at Ibrox and not repaying the national lottery unlike the London 2012 games will take 30 years to repay in the forum of a Loan. yeah Glasgow won Fair and Square LOL. Considering that a Glasgow paper recently detailed how they cant understand why a Case of Whiskey afforded to Jamaican voting Delegate for the Games did not net them the 2012 Training Site for the Jamaican National Team yet. The old Scot fear that Birmingham will get those duties. Hey why would a Case of Whiskey not be considered a bribe ? gosh Adelaide could certainly throw those type of charges around many years after losing to Kuala Lumpar. The IOC Cleaned up their Act and a gift of a case of Whiskey delivered to a hotel room in Colombo would be viewed as a bribe. Having a Craig Mc Latchney as one of the key members of evaluation team after he wrote the sports Hosting Strategy for Scotland was a real fair and square way of doing business. Meanwhile in Abuja Jack Warner, Vice President of Fifa, gave the highest compliment to the Abuja National Stadium Complex last week as having one of the Best Stadiums in the world bar none. Personally I would take the opinion of a Jack Warner over a Consultant with a vested interest in seeing his work pay off for a client being Glasgow. Mr. Mc Latchney I am sure was very fair but one has to wonder considering the one paragraph on Abuja Stadium by a person with a conflict of interest with his involvement with Scotland or a Fifa Vice President with no vested interest beyond the actually operation of something that is already happening in Nigeria next year the U17 world cup . I wonder if the athlete with the Mc latchney last name in Scotland is related to Craig the inspector of sports venues ? Probably LOL jim jones
arwebb
Same old Jim Jones. Bitter, twisted, irrelevant, prejudiced babble. james
I wonder if you actually read that piece before posting a link and failing miserably to score points. I got it right, Sir. Why would they have to ask for what they are purposed about? To me this is like preaching to the public to have a hand in it when things aren't going the right direction. Or would you like to correct me on that?
arwebb
You've got a nerve to talk about preaching with some of the rubbish you come out with. The Tower Bridge Fox
Over all I liked the opening ceremony. It had many attributes that the London opening ceremony lacked, I especially like the musicals number in George square,(I was expecting Danny boyle to do something like that at London ,But as we all know he didn’t.)And the tartan formation dancers placing the chairs in the stadium,Was good choreography.I like John Barrowman but I’m still note sure what I made of his opening songOver all 10 and of Ten for feel good atmosphere.
