But that's a good strategy. Don't have the Scotland athletes march in; but everybody else -- do they'll all be tired by the time competition begins. Scotguy Posted December 31, 2007 Author Report Share Posted December 31, 2007 Here is some more details about the venues: EXISTING VENUES Hampden Park The home of Scottish football will also be a home for the 2014 Games as it will host the track and field events as well as the closing ceremony. A specially-created platform will allow the construction of an athletics track. The capacity will be reduced to 46,000. Tollcross International Aquatics Centre Already home to a 50-metre pool, development plans will see the construction of a second pool and an increase in capacity to 6,000. After the Games, the seating area will be reduced to a sustainable 2,500. Kelvinhall International Sports Arena The 80-year-old Kelvinhall regularly hosts major athletics and boxing events and will be modernised as a venue for the wrestling and judo events. Ibrox Stadium One of the few stadia in Europe that has been awarded five-star status by UEFA, Ibrox is a classic of British football architecture with its Archibald Leitch-designed red-brick main stand. The 50,000-capacity home of Rangers Football Club will host the rugby sevens. Kelvingrove Lawn Bowls Complex Kelvingrove will play host to the lawn bowls competition during the Games. The University of Glasgow and the refurbished Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum will form a stunning backdrop for the four completely relaid bowling greens. The Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) The SECC, more often used as a venue for rock concerts than sporting events, will host the boxing competition and will also be the site of the press centre. The Clyde Auditorium A venue designed by world famous architect Sir Norman Foster but known to locals as the Armadillo will host the weightlifting. Scotstoun Stadium The Scotstoun leisure centre - which regularly hosts athletics events - will undergo significant modernisation in preparation for the Games, when it will be the venue for table tennis and squash. Strathclyde Park A picturesque country park on the banks of the Clyde which will see the triathlon medals contested in and around Strathclyde Loch. Celtic Park The home of Celtic Football Club - famous for its atmosphere - will be the venue for the opening ceremony. Shooting Venues The shooting will be staged at two venues, the Ministry of Defence ranges at Barry Buddon, near Carnoustie in Angus and the Strathclyde Police Training Academy at Jackton near East Kilbride on the edge of Glasgow. NEW VENUES The National Indoor Sports Arena (NISA) The new venue - a key part in the development plans for Glasgow - will be built next door to Celtic Park and will have room for 5,000 spectators for the badminton. The National Velodrome Also built in the shadow of Celtic Park, the velodrome will be the fourth world-class cycle track in the UK after the existing facilities in Manchester and Newport and the 2012 Olympic venue in London. The National Entertainments Arena (formerly SECC) A new Sir Norman Foster-designed venue built on the existing SECC site which will host the gymnastics and the netball finals in front of up to 12,500 spectators, making it one of the largest indoor venues in the UK. arwebb Posted January 2, 2008 Report Share Posted January 2, 2008 As far as I'm aware, no work is going to take place at Hampden until after the 2012 Olympics. Hampden is a nominated venue for the football tournaments. Some recent reports have also suggested that this is the first stage of a redevelopment that could see the final capacity increased to over 70,000 in a bid to ensure the stadium remains eligible to host European football finals. Scotguy Posted January 7, 2008 Author Report Share Posted January 7, 2008 Some Information on the Clyde Fastlink project that will be used during the games Clyde Fastlink will be a “state of the art” public transport system running a six minute interval service from the city centre along the northern bank of the River Clyde, via the International Financial Services District, SECC, and the new Transport Museum, terminating at the west end of Glasgow Harbour. The public transport vehicle will provide an experience offering many of the benefits of a tram without the rails embedded in the ground. From Glasgow Harbour to the eastern end of Broomielaw, the system will be almost fully segregated from the existing road network, running on its own private section. Two-way sections will be provided for this length of the route, with the exception of a short section on Broomielaw at Lancefield flats where it will be on-street due to land constraint. In the city centre section it runs in a clockwise one-way loop passing below Glasgow Central at the “Heilanmans Umbrella” and sharing the network with all other traffic, but running on bus lanes where possible to minimise delay. To ensure journey time reliability traffic signal priority will be given to Clyde Fastlink when approaching junctions, especially within the city centre. This will be achieved by introducing a traffic stage dedicated to the Clyde Fastlink. At locations where space is limited, ‘pre-signals’ will be implemented allowing Clyde Fastlink to gain a head start on other queuing traffic. The plans, one of three options being considered by the club, could see the stadium in Glasgow completely rebuilt with a new capacity of 70,000.
