DESPATIE, MIRANDA OFFICIALLY ADDED TO OLYMPIC DIVING TEAM

THUNDER BAY, Ont. - Alexandre Despatie and Arturo Miranda were officially added to Canada's Olympic diving team Thursday after passing an evaluation.

Despatie, of Laval, Que., and Miranda, of Montreal, did not compete at Canada's diving trials in June so that Despatie could fully recover from a broken foot. They were pre-selected to the team provided they met certain conditions.

The final condition took place Wednesday as a committee of three international FINA judges from Canada evaluated Despatie on the three-metre springboard, and Despatie and Miranda on three-metre synchro, in a simulated competitive environment. They agreed that Despatie has completely recovered from his injury and that the pair are on track in their final Olympic preparations.

''Honestly, I was confident that we would meet the conditions set by Diving Canada,'' said Despatie. ''I've been diving well since I've recovered from my injury. We are currently putting all our efforts towards performing to the utmost of our abilities at the Olympics. We are grateful to Diving Canada for allowing us more time to get back to peak form.''

We just barely defeated Korea 79-77. By wining we stay alive in the wildcard tournament and we will face either Puerto Rico or Croatia in the quarters.

I have to say thought, it was an amazing come-back from Canada. In the third quarter we where up to 18 points down and whit about five minutes left in the game we were over 10 points down.

Good thing they came back in the manner they did against South Korea. I was getting worried.

Anyway, having NBA players in the Canadian team is a mixed bag these days. Dalembert, I reckon, got into an argument with Rautins after the game against Slovenia when Rautins indicted him for what he saw as poor play in Dalembert. Consequently Sam sulked. Benching an NBA player now on a national team took guts on Leo's part. (good luck to future Canadian NBA players joining after Dalembert got embarassed like that if Rautins is still the coach) Nash has nothing further to prove and his major priority is with the Suns and getting them that title. Plus at his age, he's got nagging injuries. Jamal Magloire is lazy and wallows deep on the Dallas bench that surely won't get him meaningful playing time for Canada. Then again, he never gave much consideration or care for suiting up for Canada. Forget it, Leo told him, and rightly so. Joel Anthony, currently with Miami, is down with the cause. Juan Mendez and Carl English are on the cusp of the NBA.

Fact is, there maybe not enough depth to make a serious run in the elimination round now that Canada is in it (or in Canadian basketball in general right now), and Dalembert getting kicked out. Canada may have just enough to get by with. Now with that happening, I just don't Canada making it among the top three. I'd be happy if they did because the real time to shine could be in London, and Beijing experience will help them. Hopefully by then, either of the Doornenkamp brothers, Osvaldo Jeanty, Devoe Joseph, Vladimir Kuljanin, etc. will earn their international experience.
