I'm not sure about it. Rogge was present on the past Mediterranean Games opening at Almeria 2005 (in fact i think he gave a little speech)

By the way, today was the opening ceremony some hours ago, here are some pics of it, sadly it's hard to find them on this moments (lets see if we can see some vids at Youtube)

the opening ceremony was cheesy, tacky, and seemed to drag on more than it should. The fireworks was the glimmer of wow in the whole proceedings.

though i am not thai, i do admire their king for being such an inspiring figure to the people, but for everything in the 8 performances to revolve around him, was really annoying. if this is what monarchies do, then we should be wary of London (joke).

the MC's were .......there.

the performances were not so "amazing" as their titles would suggest.

the lighting of the cauldron was overly dramatic, complete with lasers and whatnots. the flying logo was ....flying. the torch flame died when the final runner was going to light the flying logo.

a lot of yellow things, i'm not a fan of yellow.

though at least it provided the explanation for their logo which apparently is a sailing boat in honor of His Majesty's SEA sport where he won a gold medal.

and the theme song - "rythm of a winner" sounds a lot like the song "hot stuff"

maybe i expected too much since, Thailand used to be really good at these kinds of things, and their video propaganda on their ceremonies pumped up expectations so high since they chopped up a lot of really good ceremonies from the Asian Games.

the strength of these games is truly on their organizational expertise but not necessarily on the ceremonies which for many , is what truly counts.

Well, the opening ceremonies were announced long time to be a tribute to the King Bhumibol since his 80 birthday (and remember that he is a very revered person for thais, even more than Akihito to the japanese). And the yellow, just like ancient China, is the royal color of him.

You want the opening ceremony blow-by-blow?

The Opening Ceremony of the 224th SEA Games Korat 2007 was held on December 6, 2007 beginning at 19:00 local time (11:00 UTC) at the His Majesty the King's 80th Birthday Anniversary, 5th December 2007 Sports Complex in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The ceremony was attended by 20,000 spectators with the presence of numerous Thai guests on the stage and was broadcast live to Southeast Asia. The National Broadcasting Network (NBN) covered for the Philippines.

The ceremony saluted the region's culture and history, was highlighted by Thai celebrities and showcased the 80th birthday of His Majesty The King Of Thailand, King Bhumibol Adulyadej. There were the customary parade of athletes and raising of the host nation's flag and the SEA Games Federation flag. It depected the Games' theme of "Spirit, Friendship, Celebrations" amidst the choreography, the fireworks, and the pageantry.

The theme of the program was amazement, and the stage consists of a red capet entrance from the north gate (main entrance), the east gate with an LCD screen above it, the cauldron in the south. Thai designs are on both sides of the pitch which is colored blue for this ceremony. Don't forget that there's a podium with a video screen on it. The podium is facing the royal box. Don't forget that the delegations face that box, too.

The ceremony was conducted in English and Thai (the latter being the host's language.)

The SEA Games' Journey To Korat

Before the start of the ceremony, the Thai royal anthem is played as the entrance of the Crown Prince of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn was announced.

To the great Chakri Dynasty,

To the leader of the Siamese people in might and splendor,

The people, in peace and contentment

From his tireless labor and guidance,

Pray, that whatever he wills,

Will come to pass for his glory

The Opening Ceremonies began with a welcome announcement by the announcers. A brass band opened the first scene of the program and executed their choreograph and formations. Behind them performers waved flags in the colors of the Games' logo.

They were then joined by three members of the Royal Thai Army carrying the SEA Games Federation flag. They then marched to the podium.

Amazing Great King

Following the exit of the performers of the previous section, haunting music signaled the beginning of the next segment that paid tribute to His Majesty The King and his 80th birthday celebration. The stadium darkened for this, in which the look of the Korat SEA Games appeared in light.

The King opened numerous SEA Games held in Thailand. Floats and costumes of Thai culture appeared in the stadium. A royal yacht then appeared over the field using wires to the delight of the crowd.

The floats were then joined by royal yachts pulled in the infield. The chant of "Long Live The King" (in Thai) signaled the entry of the final float: the one with Thailand's royal symbol as the segment came to a close.

Amazing Isan Winner

This section paid tribute to the Isan region (where Korat is located) and its hosting of the 24th SEA Games. After a section involving torches and other (but very dangerous) firebreathing acts, plus a dragon, a long train entered and performers wearing the Games' colors form the Games logo. They then danced to the song "Spirit, Friendship, Celebrations" sung by a male Thai singer.

Amazing Sport Ceremony

The participating teams entered in the traditional parade of nations via the main entrance. The parade is done in the following order: Brunei, Cambodia Indonesia, Laos Malaysia, Myammar, Philippines, Singapore, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Thailand.

The names of these nations were announced in Thai and English, followed by the mentioning of the team's manager and flag bearer.

The placards with team names for the athletes' parade have two diagonal halves - white and yellow - with the country's name(English) on the right and the logo of the Games on the left. (The parade was led by 240 flag bearers carring the flags of Thailand, the royal standard, the flags of the participating nations and the SEA Games logo.) As each delegation enters a map of that country appears on the LCD screen.

The following table lists the countries and territories in the order of their entrance. It is worth noting that not all the athletes participated in the opening ceremonies, as some may have chosen to prepare themselves for races and competitions that were scheduled the very next morning, or they're in competition as the ceremonies take place. (Next to the names is the six of the delegation in athletes.)

BRU Brunei Darussalam 61

CAM Cambodia 232

INA Indonesia 574

LAO Laos 186

MAS Malaysia 820

MYA Myanmar 506

PHI Philippines 620

SIN Singapore 442

TLS Timor Leste 7

VIE Vietnam 624

THA Thailand 982

Following the trend set from the selection of six Filipino athletes at the Manila 2005 SEA Games Opening Ceremony, the flag was brought this time into the stadium by six members of the Royal Thai Army. A display by Can, the Games' mascot, then followed.

After the athletes were gathered infield, a short speech in Thai was delivered.

This speech came from the chief organizer of the Korat 2007 SEA Games. He declared the city "Southeast Asia's capital of sports" during the SEA Games.

He was followed by Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, who told the SEA Games athletes, "Your achievements will inspire and motivate future generations," before adding, "Please compete cleanly, without using doping." He also hoped for peace during his short speech. "Our world today is in need of peace and brotherhood, the values of the Olympic Games," he said. "May these Games be held in peace.

He then declared the Games officialy open.

(Cue: Royal anthem of Thailand.)

The Thai flag was raised to the instrumental rendition of the Thai national anthem, Phleng Chat.

Thailand unites flesh and blood of Thais.

Nation of the people; belonging to the Thais in every respect.

Long maintained [has been] the independence

Because the Thais seek, and love, unity.

Thais are peace-loving;

But at war we're no cowards.

Sovereignty will not be threatened

Sacrificing every drop of blood for the nation

Hail the nation of Thailand, long last the victory, Hurrah.

Members of the Royal Thai Army then raised the SEA Games flag while an unofficial SEA Games Anthem was played. (It has no anthem of its own, like the Pan-American Games.)

A Thai athlete recited the Athletes' Oath on behalf of all the athletes from the podium followed by an university professor reading the oath on behalf of all judges.

Amazing Royal Flame

The SEA Games Torch entered the stadium in the hand of a boxer before the SEA Games Flame was lit by a weightlifter. She paused to show the torch to the cheering crowd one last time before placing it on the SEA Games Federation logo part of the Korat SEA Games logo. The logo then traveled by wires to the cauldron. The original scenario (the flame would be lit on a ball to that part of the logo, then to the caudron) was discouraged. Fireworks flanked the cauldron's lighting.

Amazing Spirit

Performers dressed as fairies entered the stadium after the lighting of the caudron. The segment's message: fight global warming. Performers dressed in green then entered to promote the enviroment. Each of them carried plants. Then they gave them to the athletes. Eventually the "fairies" covered the athletes with a giant pink banner which says "SAVE THE WORLD" as the segment came to a close.

Finale: Amazing Friendship

The athletes were then moved trackside for the last segment of the Opening Ceremonies where the infield will be flooded with all those who performed during the ceremony. 11 balloons representing the Southeast Asian nations entered, together with performers carrying banners with the maps of each of those nations. Before this, shots from each of these nations are shown on the LCD screen. After the infield was flooded a female singer entered and sang the Games' theme song "Rhythm Of The Winner".

Lyrics:

Can you hear it?

Voice that's calling from your spirit.

Voice that comes and excites us, us all to this mantra.

To be right here, dancing strong moving along with our pride.

Each to try with all the best he can, for the world to witness him.

Shining bright with a dedication

Growing stronger even if you don't win

Everybody shares the very same rhythm in his heart.

Sharing rhythm of the winner, that is yours and is mine.

Sharing rhythm of the winner, that wakes up us all to share this dance.

Hold our hands, dosen't matter where you come from,

Celebrate to gather out loud the victory of our sports.

Shining bright with a dedication

Growing stronger even if you don't win

Everybody shares the very same rhythm in his heart.

Sharing rhythm of the winner, that is yours and is mine.

Sharing rhythm of the winner, that wakes up us all to share this dance.

(3x) Rhythm of the winner!

The Thai royal anthem is played one last time as the exit of the Crown Prince of Thailand, Maha Vajiralongkorn was announced.

This ends the opening ceremony. Your reactions are welcome!

Well, i will not read the description since i'm planning to watch it on Youtube when is published (if not then that will be another thing). The prince also opened the Universiade in Bangkok some months ago, looks like the King is not in good wealth actually since he had to be attended on hospital by vascular problems.

Now, speaking about sports:

SEA Games: Thais clinch two gold medals in sepak takraw

SINGAPORE: Hosts Thailand took the first two gold medals on the official opening of the 24th SEA Games (Southeast Asian Games) on Thursday, sweeping the men's and women's team hoop sepak takraw events.

Hoop sepak takraw is a variation of the traditional Southeast Asian sport. The aim of the game is to score as many "baskets" as you can in 20 minutes. Just like traditional sepak takraw, any part of the body, except the hands, can be used.

Indonesia set the pace in the men's competition with a score of 650 points. But Myanmar overtook them in the afternoon, leaving favourites Thailand with a target of 760 points or better for gold.

The Thai men had no problem beating both Myanmar and Indonesia, finishing with 930 points to easily win the gold medal. Myanmar settled for silver while Indonesia shared bronze with the Philippines (600).

The day ended with a sweep for Thailand as the women also took gold with a high-score of 630 points. Myanmar settled for silver with 590, while the Philippines (550) and Vietnam (480) shared bronze.

Regional sepak takraw powers Malaysia are boycotting the competition in a dispute over the ball being used, after Thai organisers changed from the traditional rattan to a rubber covered ball.

The whole thing is more focused on the king rather than the cumture of the people and the games. That'w what I see the whole thing amounted and it's no longer interesting to me. You can keep on worshiping human being.

james that was the opening ceremony, a thread already over. Sports is another issue now, which i think is more interesting now to talk about.

And it's ''culture'', no cumture

SEA Games: S'pore assured of gold, silver in table tennis mixed doubles finals

By Patwant Singh, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 07 December 2007 2227 hrs

KORAT, Thailand: Another gold and silver is confirmed for Singapore in table tennis, since it will be an all-Singapore finals in the mixed doubles events on Saturday.

Singapore has already won both the men's and women's team gold medals earlier.

In Friday's semi-final, Singapore's Gao Ning and Sun Bei Bei took on Thailand at the Event Hall at Klang Plaza, and had to fight hard to get into the finals.

The Thais - Sanguansin Phakpoom and Komwong Nanthana - put up a strong challenge but went down 2-3 to Singapore.

In the other semi-final, the Singaporean duo of Li Jiawei and Yang Ji took just 17 minutes to overpower their Thai opposition 3-0.

So Singapore is assured of both the gold and silver medals.

The only uncertainty is which Singapore pair will take the top position after Saturday's match. - CNA/ms
