In Indoor Volleyball, if 2 ex-Axis nations, Italy and Japan make it, this would be the first time since the sport was introduced in the SOGs that 9 nations would have BOTH their Men and Womens' team represented in the same Games:

China, USA, Brazil, Russia, Serbia, Venezuela, Poland, and possibly Italy and Japan. It's going to be one HOT Indoor Volleyball tournament.

Wow, so many European countries in the Handball Tournamet.

It's always been that way. I think the South Korean women are the only non-European team to have any great success at the international level.

Mens Volleyball

Yesterdays results

ALG-ARG 0-3 18-25 24-26 22-25

AUS-ITA 0-3 17-25 09-25 16-25

IRI-THA 3-1 19-25 25-15 25-23 25-14

KOR-JPN 1-3 21-25 25-21 23-25 19-25

Italy clear favourites to finish on top now after easy wins over Japan and Australia so the race is on for the remaining Asian spot. Japan and Australia are looking to be the strongest chance to qualify so Fridays clash between the two nations is a critical one.

Standings after all have played 3 games

1 ITA 6pts

2 AUS 5pts

3 JPN 5pts

4 ALG 5pts

5 ARG 5pts

6 IRI 4pts

7 KOR 3pts

8 THA 3pts

Interesting that you get a point even if you lose

Mens Volleyball

Australia may have waisted there chance to qualify with a shock lost to Korea today going down 3 - 2. This now means they must win against Japan on Friday and rely on other teams beating Japan.

Uh-oh in Men's Volleyball. Oz almost out. OZ lost to the Korean men 3-2; so OZ now stands at 2 wins - 2 losses.

The 2 ex-Axis nations  -- Italy and Japan -- look like they may pick up the 2 remaining spots for Peking. So this MIGHT be the first time the 3 WW2 Axis powers are together in the same tournament in the SOGs since the end of hostilities in 1945. (Of course, if Romania, Turkey AND Spain qualified -- WHY, it would'be a grand old Fascist party time!!:lol:

Baron, looks like your "Axis fantasy" will become true. Japan qualified, and Italy is also in (they could have there record tied by Japan, but there set ratio is much hirer). So, the men's Olympic Volleyball field will look like this:

China (Host)

Brazil (World Cup Champion)

Russia (World Cup Runner-up)

Bulgaria (World Cup Second Runner-up)

Egypt (African OQT)

Japan (Asian OQT)

Serbia (European OQT)

United States (North American OQT)

Venezuela (South American OQT)

Germany (World OQT 1)

Poland (World OQT 2)

Italy (World OQT 3)

Its also worth mentioning that half the field is European.

Well, I'm not surprised. I mean the preponderance of the bigger, taller, heavier players come from there. Am surprised the Dutch aren't there. Because outside Europe, the only regions that could challenge insofar as height person-to-person div. by overall population would be the US, Canada, Brazil, Oz, strangely Cuba, and I guess the African countries with a high Watutsi population -- which if the massacres in Rwanda didn't take care of, they still must have significant numbers around there. India I think would have enough fairly tall men and women in their northern parts to put together competitive volleyball teams. (And of course, the UK, has less than 4 years to also put together not-embarrasing volleyball teams for 2012. )

So, what's left:

Italy: 12 points

Japan: 11 points

Argentina: 10 points

Korea, Australia: 9 points

Algeria: 8 points

Iran: 7 points

Thailand: 6 points

Match schedule for Tokyo (All times are local)

Sunday, June 8

Thailand vs. Korea (11:05)

Iran vs. Australia (13:05)

Argentina vs. Italy (15:05)

Algeria vs. Japan (18:00)

Yup, win or lose tomorrow night, WW2 allies Italy and Japan will get at least 13 pts apiece -- enough to send them to Beijing.

Shhhhhhh...

Italy is not yet qualified! They have to keep top ranking till the end.

Remember, at least one of the two qualifies has to be asian. If Japan (by winning) would surpass Italy (by losing) -SGRAT, SGRAT-, there would be only an asian for the second spot.

Don't wory, if Italy loses and Japan wins they will be tied on points, but Italy is way ahead in the tie-breakers.

Sometimes I don't understand our NOC.

Yao Jie (badminton) has qualified for the Games in the IBF qualification procedure. Because she was not in the semi finales during the european championships she can not go to the Games. The NOC said she had enough possibilities to qualify for the national qualification rules. And those rules are made by the national sport federation and the NOC.

I didn't catch that. Why is the NOC throwing away a possible olympic medal. Are they mad?

That's a a good draw for the USA men. Boy, Pool 1 is tough -- Russia, Brazil and Serbia all together. That should favor the US.

A little tougher for the US women, being with China and Japan there. But Women's Pool 1 is just as tough -- Italy, Brazil, Russia and Serbia! Whew!!
