Beijing Qualifying Schedule

PS: I just noticed the bios of the Canadian women water polo team, and I think I found the reason why: this is a young team with, like their female basketball counterparts, only a handful of players on it with Olympic experience. Many are based in Quebec around in the Montreal area. Apparently, the coaches went toward a youth movement in the last four years. So I think their youthful inexperience worked against them in qualifying.

Yup, all four semi-finalist qualified, and Canada just lost its quarterfinal...

So, the final line-up for the women's is China, the Netherlands, the USA, Australia, Hungary, Russia, Italy and Greece.

Look at that: 5 Euro nations, 1 North American, and 2 Asian (one only because it's the host country). Where's Africa and South American? Only tokenly 'universal.'

Which is why this cost-prohibitive sport is outdated on the current Olympic roster. It (both men's and women's) should be removed.

(And no GBR. GBR's going to really have to hustle for its team sports otherwise, other than soccer and the rowing disciplines, their teams will face a dismal showing in 4 years' time.)

Some news on the Olympic soccer front:

New Zealand's under-23 men's team and elite women's team have qualified for the Olympic soccer tournament as Oceania's representatives. The men hammered the Solomon Islands 8-0 in their final, and the women bested Papua New Guinea in a 2-0 victory.

Yes this is the first time New Zealand has ever qualified Football teams for the Olymics. The NZOC still has to ratify this first.

More shockers! Very big news in the (field) hockey world: Great Britain kills India's vanishing hopes in Olympic qualifying with a 2-0 victory in the final, meaning for the first time ever after EIGHT decades of Olympic participation, the eight-time gold medal (last won gold in 1980 in a severely-depleted field) legendary Indian field hockey machine will NOT take part in the Olympics. India's coach Joaquim Carvalho resigned afterward. Even the IHF vice-president resigned.

So Team GB goes in with Australia, New Zealand, Canada, South Korea, Pakistan, The Netherlands, China, South Africa, Spain, and Belgium.

Like with Russian water polo, Indian field hockey in the Olympics was something else we hard-core Olympic fans counted on appearing.

Well, its a done deal: Canada, South Korea and Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) all qualified for Olympic baseball. They join the previously qualified China PR (host), the United States of America (champion of the America's Olympic qualifier), Cuba (runner-up of the America's Olympic qualifier), the Netherlands (champion of the European Olympic qualifier) and Japan (champion of Asia's Olympic qualifier).

So we have four Asian teams, three American teams and one European team.

Yeah! April is very busy for the Spanish athletes too. We are taking part in 10 qualifying events!

I have a question: Does anybody know which teams are qualified for the Paralympic Games? I can't find anything about Paralympic Qualification events anywhere.

And another question related to the Paralympics... :P Are there any images of the mascot practising the Paralympic sports? I mean something like this

olympics-fuwa3.jpg

but with Fu Niu Lele ;)

Germany and Roumania both qualified for women's Handball by respectively beating Croatia and Hungary. The winner of both the Sweden-Croatia and the Hungary-Japan games will qualify. Also the winner of the South Korea-France game will directly qualify for Beijing, while the loser will have to win its last game against either Congo or Côte d'Ivoire.

Well, I am very proud of this. Part of the Women's Softball qualifying round is being held in Bloomington, Illinois in June and my sister has been chosen to sing the National Anthem at it. B) She is asked to sing the anthem at a lot of minor league baseball games in Illinois yearly so this a great honor.

Looks like I will be heading to the midwest in June. B)

Here are some more wild cards given by the tripartite commission , this time in Archery.

Men's individual:

Bhutan

Iraq

For those wondering why Bhutan got two wild-cards in Archery, it should be noted that Archery is Bhutan's national sport.
