nykfan845
While I DO agree that five mascots are too much, I think BOCOG has done a fine job with this. They are all pretty cute. And they have that Asian-cartoonish look. I like them.
Pui from HK
News said Dargon failed to be inculded coz the dargon in Chinese culture, though look alike to the western one, have totally different meaning. In China and many east Asian countries dargon is definely a lucky and positive symbol, however in the west dargon doesn't have that positive image. Monkey King failed coz it's too restricted. It's not just an animal, but a very well-known folktale characteristic. It will cause many copyright problem if it's selected as a mascot. This saturday China will issue the first set of Olympic stamp, and of coz it will be the emblem and the mascots.
Michael
I was just having another look at them and i've decided that they look like what the mascots would be if the games were somewhere in Mexico. They have a very Aztec look to them, especialy Nini (The green one) and Yingying. (The yellow one.)
Pui from HK
In fact you are not the first one to point out the amazing similarity between Aztec and Chinese cultures, esp on their traditional graphic representation.

Kenadian
I like the black panda (except for the lettuce in his hair) and there is something about the red one too that I like. The green one looks like it has a Thunderbird on its head (a tribute to Vancouver 2010?) and the blue one looks like it is wearing a blue Irish St. Patty's Day hat. Olympia
China is a bid over-crowded, so it's logical they take a whole famaly as mascot!
zainhasan15
actully mostly people are disliking these mascots becaues they are belong to western countries and they have totally different culture. If you see Asian culture closely you will find these mascots very meaningfull. China is full of colours and cultural tradtions. On closer inspection you can observe pinkish colour on green doll's face and if you have a sharp memory you can recall dancers with many objects in Bejing's presentation in Athens 2004 closeing ceremony with same pinkish make up on thier faces. lrd1rocha
I only like the Panda, the others remind me of the god-awful mascots of any other recent major sports events.
Sir Rols
Well, they're certainly cute _ almost too sweet for most tastes, but I'm sure they'll sell like hot cakes to Chinese kids. At least they weren't monstrosities like Izzy, the Snowlets or Neve and Glitz, and that's about as good a recommendation as you could give a mascot. Is five too many? Probably, but it's easy to see which one will become dominant in the western markets and get most sales. It's amazing that such a small thing like choosing mascots can become such a political issue bringing in provincial rivalries and the threat of unrest to China. Kenadian
See, I think cute is good. The mascots have to appeal to children and most recent mascots failed at that. Izzy was too goofy. The Snowlets too cartoonish. Millie, Syd and Olly too plastic. Phebos and Athena too clumsy. Neve and Gliz too rubbery. These ones have that kind of friendly little personality kids go for. Previous mascots seemed to be designed for adults to say "look how cool we are" because they were computer generated or represented some lesser known aspect of the host country. I believe the most beloved Olympic mascot was Mesha from Moscow because he was a big happy bear who had a personality. Didn't thousands of Russian children cry for weeks when Mesha "died" at the closing ceremony? No one cried for Izzy, Magique or Cobi.

LA84
The panda is cute except for the foliage growing out of his head. IMHO there haven't been any good mascots since Hadori in '88. The Olympic mascot trend should have stopped after that.

Actually, many of the trends in Pacific Northwest art can be traced to Asian influences. A lot of the totem styles are very similar to northern China/Russia. I'm glay they put in a BIRD. It's about time somebody used a bird. Oh, and a FISH. Yay. All of these quadreped mammal mascots bore me. And I LIKE Phevos/Athena/Neve/Gliz :verysad: They were/are something different for a change. Pui from HK
It's amazing that such a small thing like choosing mascots can become such a political issue bringing in provincial rivalries and the threat of unrest to China. Since Beijing's first bid of the Olympic in 1991 China has become Olympic addicted. All things on Olympic can draw the people crazy. I still remember when Beijing won the bid in 2001 the whole Beijing city, as you can see from TV, turned to be a overnight canival. It's so unbelieveable as Beijing is also famous for its tight security control being the national capital. Every region of China wants to take part in the Olympic, as they've all been keenly involved into the bid. That's why soon after Beijing won the bid the Sichuan provincial government officially requested the organzing committee to adopt Panda as the mascot. Later Qinghai, a province which consists of huge Tibetan population, also formally proposed the Tibetan Anteople. It became a headache of the organizing committee, coz the national policy is that the western provinces, esp regions of minorities, should be considered first. If Tibetan anteople failed to be the mascot, the Tibetan population would feel they were not respected, and to be ignored. For the same reason if Panda failed, those western provinces would feel the same. Last night after the launching ceremony a news reporter asked a representative of Qinghai province, a ethnic Tibetan, how did he feel on the mascots. He was nearly to cry and said "I'm so honored that our anteople can be the mascot of the Olympic." So the current mascots is more or less a compromise of all interests that makes all happy. Afterall, Beijing 2008 is NOT the Olympic of Beijing, but of the whole nation. And in fact I'm happy too as there's one of mascots, Beibei, who is come from the sea, rivers and lakes, representing the south~~!

Hope she could go HongKong to ride the horse~! haha By the way,Pui who is representing the North? I guess it's Nini, because Nini is from Beijing,Beijing is north city of China. Yingying is representing the West for sure But Jingjing also from West China, haha~!
Pui from HK
LOL I think Nini is most matched with the North too. BTW do you have swallow kite like it? We don't have it in the South. The most popular kite style in the South are butterfly and dargonfly. We rarely have swallow kite.

Too early to say this, but it is going to be "tough" for London 2012 to decide on what mascot(s) it will use for their Games.

You could see swallow kites everywhere in spring and fall. Now,you still live in Beijing, right? And after Spring Festival, about March or April,I believe you will have chance to see that for sure. You know i live in Harbin, still many people like flying kites, but swallow kites are not so pop in Harbin, because that's old Beijing's "emblem". And i also hope many people like Nini will like Chinese swallow kite.
