Optimism as deal to pay for Crossrail ‘close’

The long-awaited go-ahead for Crossrail could be just days away as City of London councilmen prepare for an emergency meeting to discuss the rail link between Heathrow and Canary Wharf.

News of progress in negotiations between government and London’s biggest business groups came on Monday as Gordon Brown, the British prime minister, pledged his support for the scheme provided businesses were “prepared to play their part"...

....In a sign of the talks advancing, business representatives and the mayor of London expressed optimism that a deal to pay for Crossrail – a scheme that has seen many false dawns since it was conceived 18 years ago – was close.
