arwebb
Don't underestimate Fenerbahçe chances. Did very well to get past Sevilla and going to Istanbul is always intimidating, but I just can't see them getting past Chelsea over two legs. Rob2012
Depends which Chelsea turn up. Avram Grant has not shown himself to be a man for the big matches so far.

arwebb
His team didn't perform in the League Cup final. I didn't see the Barnsley game last week because I was at the Dome for Haye v Maccarinelli, but they're still right in the title race and cruised into the quarter-finals of the Champions League. I'm sure there are many clubs who would love to swap places.

arwebb
I would still concede that Grant needs to win one trophy this season (the Champions League probably being his best chance) to have a realistic chance of still being in position next season. Having said that, I wouldn't put it past them winning the Premier League title again.

Rei
Well, you can find bunches of idiots in every corner of the world.. and for the record, Rome has one of the lowest criminal rate in Europe among main cities. I wouldn't give much credit to certain quotes from english tabloids. Hope that everything will be fine tonight, though. ..staying on issue, I heard that in England the media tend hide football riots to avoid publicity. Is that true? Rei
I have rarely heard anything so daft. arwebb
May be but is that true that one of the steo to fight hooliganism was avoid them publicity into the media? I would find that extremely difficult to believe. The nature of football these days is such that if there were to be an incident of mass hooliganism, particularly at a Premier League game, along the lines of what was fairly routine in the 1970s and 80s, it would be headline news instantly. But, as I've said before in discussions on this subject, violence inside grounds these days is extremely rare. Not extinct. I was aware of a relatively minor incident at one of my own team's games not so long ago, but extremely rare. Not only that, but the police do work closely with football clubs and with the media in this area, as I know from my own experiences. Most police forces have a specialist liaison officer who works with the individual football club and his counterparts elsewhere and travels to home and away games all over the country. Earlier this year, I became aware of a group of individuals who were openly discussing planning some sort of trouble at a forthcoming game. Once I became aware of it, I made our club liaison officer aware of it. I believed it to be my duty to do so. But, speaking as a journalist aswell, the police do need the media on their side. If they need the public's help to catch somebody or a group of people, they need to get this information out to the public as broadly as possible. About 18 months ago, there was an incident up at Leeds (I'm not entirely sure of the circumstances), but photos of the suspected ringleaders were splashed all over the local media not long afterwards. I remember my colleagues at the Yorkshire Post carrying the story on their front page, with all these pictures. Not only does it help the police, but it's also very good copy for us. The one area where I could foresee an issue on reporting is the phenomenon where hooligans pre-arrange to meet somewhere, often well away from where their teams are playing, specifically for a fight. There was a case a couple of months ago between Leicester and Coventry thugs which made some big headlines. But frankly, if two lots of scumbags want to beat seven bells out of each other, why should anyone else care? It's the innocent bystanders who aren't interested in it that I'm worried about. It can be a complex issue and I can only base my response to the query on my own personal experiences. But to suggest that somehow these things would be deliberately hidden from view by the authorities in some way is, to my mind and in my experience, a crazy suggestion. Mainad
Forgive my cynicism, but I'm reaching for the salt as I type. I have rarely heard anything so daft. Well, what do YOU think? Do you really suppose that our notoriously contentious, blabbermouth media would be capable of uniting and maintaining a total news blackout of such disturbances,ie.TV,radio AND newspapers? Why would they want to do so,in any case? And do you seriously think that people wouldn't notice that there was major unreported trouble at football matches and talk about it to their family and friends even IF the media were somehow able to maintain a total news blackout? Unsurprisingly, the truth is somewhat simpler. It is that we have long since got a grip on major football violence in the UK,eg.hooliganism and racism.Of course, incidents do still take place now and again but they are are much fewer and far between and are always fully reported on.Indeed, far from wishing to cover it all up,the media just LOVES to seek out and report on such incidents if they can find any! Who has been filling your head with such fanciful notions?? (PS.Sorry, this was meant as a reply to Rei's post, not Arwebb's.)

arwebb
A magnificent game at Anfield tonight, one of the best I've seen in a long, long time. Wenger's excuse is ready-made for him: it wasn't a penalty. It is a foul but, for me, the initial offence takes place outside the penalty area. It's a real shame that a game of such high quality and entertainment should be settled by that one moment.
