2007 - 2008 Isu Figure Skating Season

Recommended Posts

2 months from now, the Skate America figure skating event starts the 2007 - 2008 Grand Prix season. All of it will lead to the World Championships at Sweden in late March 2008. For the six Grand Prix events, here they are.

- Skate America at Reading, Pennsylvania, USA -> October 25 - 28, 2007;

- Home Sense Skate Canada International at Quebec City, Quebec, Canada -> November 1 - 4, 2007;

- Cup of China at Harbin -> November 8 - 11, 2007;

- Trophée Eric Bompard at Paris -> November 15 - 18, 2007;

- Cup of Russia at Moscow -> November 22 - 25, 2007; and,

- NHK Trophy at Sendai, Japan -> November 29 - December 2, 2007.

The 2007 GRAND PRIX FINAL, I believe, will take place in a non-Grand Prix country for the first time, when it will be held in Torino, Italy (host city of the 2006 Winter Olympics) on December 13 - 16, 2007.

As for the other important ISU figure skating events this season, here they are as well.

- ISU European Figure Skating Championships at Zagreb, Croatia -> January 21 - 27, 2008;

- ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships at Seoul, Korea -> February 11 - 17, 2008 (the dates were changed on August 8th, 2007, with the ISU's permission);

- ISU World JUNIOR Figure Skating Championships at Sofia, Bulgaria -> February 25 - March 2, 2008; and,

- GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN.

by the way Torino was named as host of the 2010 World Figure Skating Championships

Besides, it will be interesting on who will go to these World Championships after Vancouver. Besides, was it the only candidate, like Calgary was for 2006?

I'm actually not sure who bidded. Look at this though since 2002 the host of Worlds during an Olympic year happens to be a former Olympic City

2002 - SLC, Nagano

2006 - Torino, Calgary

and

2010 - Vancouver, Torino

Also interesting since 1959 (with 1979, 1980 as exception) every time that North America will host the Olympics the previous year's World were also in North America

Here's the poof:

1959 Colorado Springs; 1960 Olympics Squaw Valley

1987 Cincinnati; 1988 Olympics Calgary

2001 Vancouver; 2002 Olympics Salt Lake City

2009 Los Angeles; 2010 Vancouver

Had Denver went on to host 1976 it would be the same as above since 1975 Worlds was held in Colorado Springs. The two Asian Olympic hosting were preceeded with European hosting of Worlds in cities both beginning with the letter L (Lyon 1971; Lausanne 1997). European Olympics hostings are usually preceeded by a European Worlds except 1976.

Interesting. So the continental rotation for the ISU Worlds are even more exact and predicable than the Olympix and World Cup.

i would prefer Chicago's United Center or Boston's TD Banknorth Garden. I know about the problem w/ SLC's Energy Solutions Arena (fomerly Delta Center). I can recall that the lower box section seems to be located pretty high.

In Canada's case here, these cities have hosted the World Figure Skating Championships so far:

Montreal -> 1932

Vancouver -> 1960, 2001

Calgary -> 1972, 2006

Ottawa -> 1978, 1984

Halifax -> 1990

Edmonton -> 1996

A quirky fact about Calgary wanting to host it in the same year as the Winter Olympics twice. Anyway, it is rather strange that Skate Canada hasn't chosen Toronto, Quebec City or Winnipeg (to name a few) to host one yet; never mind that Montreal, which was the first Canadian city to host one, hasn't done so in 75 years now.

Well, the funny thing about the US/Canada hostings is that they seem to reflect the years when the Europeans were willing to let the North Americans host very-Euro events, like the Olympix and these:

1930 - New York - the first outside Europe and the first in the US

1932 - Montreal - but the 1932 Winters were close-by in Lake Placid and the Summer in Ellay.

(Now 2 set of Paris-London couplings: 1936-37; and then 1949-50. And then for some reason, Colorado Springs hosted in 1957, 1959, 1965, 1969 and 1975. And then like the Winter Games which go to the US every 20 years or so starting in 1960, the Worlds would also return to the US every 5 o 6 years:

1969 - 1975 - 6 years, Colorado Sprigs (Mountain time zone)

1981 - Hartford (eastern time zone)

1987 - Cincinnati (Central time zone)

1992 - Oakland/SF (Pacific)

1998 - Minneapolis (Central)

2003 - Washington, DC (eastern)

2009 - Los Angeles (Pacific)

The assignment of World Figure Skating Champs host cities kinda mirror the way they distribute the Olympics.

On the Paris results, where's Brian Joubert? I wud've thot he would win in his home country?? :blink:
