Sir Rols
"These will be Olympics for young people, therefore not highly mediatized as the senior counterpart; also TV broadcasting periods will be shorter leading to a smaller interest from sponsors, therefore less financial income...". Now THAT'S a telling assesment of the Youth Games. Still, I see Moscow's now officially announced its candidacy. He says that but he's dying to host an Olympics I don't blame him. So am I. The YOG are a great stepping stone for a senior Olympic bid.

That's interesting, Torino going for a SUMMER youth games. Maybe long-term they also might have musings of becoming the first dual summer/winter host (if Munich don't beat them to it). However, it (Torino) has already done that with the Universiades. But, this is the YOUTH Olympic Games, which is not really the same as the REGULAR Olympic Games. In some detail, this is not the same way that Munich is trying to do, but "close."

I'm not talking immediately, of course. But long (long, long) term this does mean that Torino is positioning itself as a viable summer games host. I think what sir rotel is saying is that Torino MAY be looking to use the Youth Games as a stepping stone to a full fledge SOG. I am very excited to see Athens fighting to host the games, it would have been disappointing had they not at least tried. I am extremely interested to see who the other two cities are that are still "in talks" of bidding for the games.

Hey,hey, do you have any good reason for your post ?? as long as i know YSOG is open for any city, and they also have less requirement, so any city maybe still have their chance!!! But for the 1st YSOG I supprt Athens !! Go athens !!!

Algiers is the only one of the 5 that has not hosted anything olympics related. Athens, Moscow and Turin are all olympics cities. While Singapore hosted the 2005 IOC Session. Besides, Algiers couldn't even provide a decent website when they hosted the All-africa this year. And don't even let me get started on facilities... Filipe_Golias
Algiers, huh? Here is the first SYOG exotic bidder; but considering the high-profile opponents, it seems to me it will be nothing more than a bid. As for Athens, I'm glad they made it official confirming all rumors and expectations. It would be very symbolic and adequate to initiate the newest top-level Olympic event; besides, Athens's the latest Summer host city so it has EVERYTHING. Guardian
Well, Algiers did host this year's All-Africa Games. Don't know, if the 2007 Afro-Asian Games even went ahead, which was also supposed to be in Algiers, too. If it was not the case, then the idea of the latter Games may have fallen into hard times. Filipe_Golias
The International Olympic Committee has issued a press release, today, revealing the cities that have submitted a bid to host the first Summer Youth Olympic Games in 2010. A total of eleven (11) cities are now official candidates: ALGIERS, Algeria ATHENS, Greece BANGKOK, Thailand BELGRADE, Serbia DEBRECEN, Hungary GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia MOSCOW, Russia POZNAN, Poland SINGAPORE, Singapore TURIN, Italy Link: IOC press release So here we have, apart from the five cities we heard and read about, six more cities will also battle for the first SYOG. One African, six European, three Asian (all South East) and one American (from the city where these Games were approved). As expected, these Games seem to be much more attractive and best orientated to medium-sized world and regional cities, as it's proved by the international profile of the majority of these bidding cities.
