Roh departs for Guatemala to boost PyeongChang's Olympic bid

Date: June 30, 2007

President Roh Moo-hyun on Saturday (June 30) left for Guatemala, the venue of this year's general conference of International Olympic Committee (IOC) members, to drum up support for the Korean city PyeongChang's bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics, Roh's office said.

The IOC is to hold an annual meeting of its members in Guatemala City, the capital of the Central American country, on July 4-7 to pick the host city of the Winter Games in 2014.

Competing with PyeongChang are Salzburg, Austria and Sochi, Russia. The host city will be announced on July 4.

The presidential office, Cheong Wa Dae, said Roh will arrive in Guatemala on Monday after a one-night stopover in Seattle.

"During his stay in Guatemala City, Roh will attend the 119th annual meeting of IOC members to appeal for greater support for PyeongChang's bid to host the 2014 Winter Olympics. Roh will also hold a summit with Guatemalan President Oscar Berger for discussions on issues of mutual concern," presidential spokesman Cheon Ho-seon said.

"At the opening of the IOC meeting on July 4, Roh will deliver a speech in support of PyeongChang, declaring the Korean government's determination to give its full support to the Korean bid city. He will also actively contact IOC members," said Cheon.

Roh will return home on July 7 after making a two-day visit to Honolulu, Hawaii, Cheon said.

Roh has engaged in brisk diplomatic activities over the past year to enlist more support for PyeongChang, stressing that having the world's only divided country host the Winter Games would further Olympic ideals and contribute to peace on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia.

"Roh will try to maximize PyeongChang's chances of winning the Olympic bid by attending the opening ceremony of the IOC meeting, PyeongChang's presentation session and various other events. He will clearly display the Seoul government's willingness to back PyeongChang and deliver the Korean people's strong enthusiasm toward the Olympics," said a Cheong Wa Dae official

Korean bid officials arrive in Guatemala

Date: June 30, 2007

Korea’s Olympic bid delegation arrived on Friday (June 29) in Guatemala, the venue for next week’s International Olympic Committee (IOC) session which will select the city to host the 2014 Winter Olympics.

Korea’s PyeongChang is vying to stage the world’s biggest winter sports event in a close three-way race with Sochi, a Black Sea resort in Russia and Salzburg, a traditional winter sports region in Austria. The IOC is scheduled to pick the host city in a secret ballot in Guatemala on Wednesday.

"During the remaining days until the voting day, we’ll do our best to win the rights to host the Winter Games," said Kim Jung-kil, chief of the Korean Olympic Committee, who is accompanying the 60-member bid delegation.

President Roh Moo-hyun will also visit Guatemala to campaign for PyeongChang’s bid. Russia and Austria also plan to send their heads of state.

Earlier this month, PyeongChang received the best overall review in an interim IOC evaluation report, but bid-watching Web sites and recent press reports said the three candidate cities are locked in a dead-heat race.
